Although the title of this section is Interzone I will post news of Black Static here as it is a TTA Press magazine

TTA Press published 'The Third Alternative', a magazine famed for SF, fantasy, horror, weird and slipstream material as well as its design and art. After TTA acquired 'Interzone' which also contained SF genre material 'The Third Alternative' needed to be rethought and 'Black Static' is the result.

BS will contain fiction right at the horror end of the genre spectrum which includes SF, fantasy & slipstream but also has columns on horror in film, TV and fiction plus atmospheric original art and design.

Black Static 1 came out in October and volume 1 number 2 came out this month.

Apart from few specialist shops BS will not be sold retail so a subscription is the best way to obtain copies.

More about BS here http://ttapress.com/category/blackstatic/

Black Static 3 cover by David Gentry

David Gentry's voodoo doll cover for BS 3.

Matthew Holness AKA Garth Marenghi of the eponymous cult TV show has a story in this issue.

Fiction
“The Toad and I” by Matthew Holness. The author is a “A real life TV star, most famous for his Garth Marenghi character and he won the 2001 Perrier Comedy Award, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival's top prize.

Also two debut stories, “The Morning After”, is Carole Johnstone’s first author credit anywhere. Carole is a Scot now living in Essex.

Seth Skorkowsky’s “The Mist of Lichthafen” is his first story sale but he's since sold other stories and they saw the light of publication before there was space for him in BS 3.

16th in Interzone’s all time list of fiction contributors (13 stories) is Alexander Glass and here he is in BS 3 with “The Pit”. He's back with a story about depression, and it's good. Stylistically different from his earlier stories let's hope it's the first of many.

Ian Faulkner was first published in Crimewave and has another story coming up in CW 10. “The Difference Between” is Ian R. Faulkner’s first for any of TTA’s Horror, SF and fantasy genre publications.

“The Sentinels” by rising star Tony Richards.

Another rising star is Will McIntosh who closes the BS 3 fiction list with “The Fantasy Jumper”. Will is no stranger to Interzone, he appeared in IZ 200 with “Soft Apocalypse” and has featured twice more since that issue.

So is there a reasonable amount of more supernatural etc. type horror from what you are saying with SF/fantasy?

It's not 'gorey' horror but it is out and out genre horror. Plus non fiction on horror in the media/literature.

Late here now but I'll get back to you.

Black Static debuts at Fictionwise next week
http://www.fictionwise.com/eBooks/ttapressauthorseBooks.htm?cache

To quote our E edition editor Pete Bullock ...
"Beginning with Fictionwise’s regular release of new titles on Monday, March 10, 2008 (Tuesday for those of you in Australia), readers will have the option of purchasing single issues or a one-year subscription. As we did with Interzone, Black Static eBooks will debut with three issues to encourage subscriptions. The release date has been chosen to coincide with the expected arrival of the print edition of Black Static 3 overseas. Future issues will appear alongside the arrival of the print edition.

"Fictionwise offers a wide array of eBook formats, which now include formats for the Sony Reader and Amazon Kindle (with wireless download option).

"Inside each e-Edition of Black Static you will find the complete text and artwork found in the print edition. In lieu of having the phenomenal appearance that our editor, Andy Cox, bestows on the print edition, the e-Edition will be formatted so that it can be easily read on virtually any electronic device.

If you haven’t purchased at least one copy of the print edition, I strongly encourage you to do so. Andy has done an amazing job with the look and feel of Black Static, imbuing the stunning artwork of David Gentry throughout every issue. Black Static achieves an eye-popping, wicked-looking style, which gives an eerie glimpse into the tortured souls of its writers and creators."

So would Graham Masterton get in, or not? :-)

Well it's not gratuitous gore. That's what I meant by 'gorey' horror but the editor's word is gore.

Yeah, it is tempting. My inner horror fan might have reawakened recently, I feel. May just give it a shot.

Will McIntosh's story in BS 3 is horror but could easily have been an Interzone story. It is very good
