I'm eagerly waiting Nightshade's limited editions of Perdido Street Station (along with Earthling Publishings King Rat this is going to be a great year for Mieville fans)and I was wondering about the lettered editions. Specifically, what does individually remarqued mean? Generally speaking I know that a remarque is an illustration in the margins; does that mean each copy will be unique?

Also, are there plans for any future limiteds?

Yep, China will do a unique remarq for each copy of the lettered.

As to whether we'll do any more limiteds... it's hard to say. We've done a few limiteds here and there, but nothing of this scale. If Perdido works out, we've got a couple of other ideas. If not, probably not.

Sorry for the delay, I don't actually check my own message boards that often.

Progress continues on Perdido. Right now we're waiting on some artwork from China, which he's supposed to be getting to us shortly.

I don't think there has been an update on PSS since October (I apologize if I missed one) are things at least progressing to the point where you can offer a target release date?

Thanks.

Hey guys,

It's been sent to the new designers, and they're redoing the whole package right now. We're changing the cover, interior layout, trim size, everything. It'll be a MUCH nicer book than it would have been before. Thanks for being so patient.

I just noticed that "Coming in early 2009!" has been added to the product page. Any chance the timeframe could be narrowed down some? Also, will the lettered ship at the same time as the limited?

Thanks for the update.

I'm not sure where not responding to politely phrased, reasonable questions about massively past due projects gets you, but you're knocking it out of the park.

No news on PERDIDO STREET STATION yet. We're still committed to the project, but there are still considerable ducks to be lined up. Just as soon as there's real news, it will be posted to the main page.

Thanks for the response, although I have to say I find its content very disappointing. This is a book that went on sale 4.3 years ago -- China has written two novels since it's announcement -- how could there possibly be "considerable ducks to be lined up"? You could have hand written the requisite copies in the time it has taken to get to this point.

I have to agree with Jakem. I ordered this book 2 years ago and to hear that an imminent publication is unlikely is hugely disappointing. Given that its been over four years since this book went on sale I think I'd rather have a refund than go on waiting indefinitely.

Will you provide a refund if requested?

Just a point of clarification -- but why would one need to update their credit card information? I (and I assume other people who pre-ordered)was charged when I ordered the book; I've even kept the statement.

I just want to make sure I'm not headed for a situation where I end up arguing over a double-billing because the payment was lost over the years.

Thanks for the clarification.

It's now "late 2009" and the book is not included in the latest posting on book schedules.

I've not only changed my credit card since ordering the book 4 years ago, but I've changed address twice. I can't even look at my order information since all the accounts on here have been changed since that order.

When I've mailed NSB to make sure my details are current I just get told that old orders are untouched, which doesn't leave me with much confidence that my delivery details are updated.

So "soon" didn't mean "within the next 4 months" I guess.

Ross, I don't want to seem like a jerk here; I was, am and will continue to be excited for this book. But what possible justification can you offer for both Nightshade's failure to produce this volume in a timely fashion, and the corresponding news blackout on its status?

When you accept payment in advance, isn't it incumbent upon you to produce what is paid for in a timely fashion? We are coming up on five years since this book was announced (and since I, and I am sure many others, paid for it) and I still have zero idea of when it will be finished.

Again, I don't want to present myself as some malcontent looking to lob bombs on the internet, but your customers have been beyond patient, and at this point I don't think it is too much to ask for an explanation as to why the book is taking so long, what is being done to get it on track, and a real target date for delivery.

Thanks for your attention in this matter.

Regards,

Jake

If Subterranean Press can do it, why can't Nightshade?

Posted at 7:35 AM to their Blog.

"We’ve been fairly quiet about this, as we wanted everything sorted out before stringing our customers along again, but our traycase supplier went out of business owing us many thousands of dollars and hundreds of cases. We placed an order with the manufacturer our friend Jim Seels at ASAP Publishing uses, as well as our other regular supplier Judi Conant, and are happy to say that the following cases have just finished shipping:

– Or Else My Lady Keeps the Key (Kage Baker);
– Gardens of the Moon (Steve Erikson);
– Interworld (Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves);
– The Other in the Mirror (Philip Jose Farmer);
– The City & the City (China Mieville);
– On Stranger Tides (Tim Powers);
– Wild Thyme and Green Magic (Jack Vance);

Very shortly, our shippers will be working on:

– Woods & Waters Wild (Charles de Lint);
– Altered Carbon (Richard K. Morgan);
– The Steel Remains (Richard K. Morgan);
– The Jack Vance Reader (Jack Vance);
– Worlds of Weber (David Weber);"

Follow-up to the above, via letter in a package I received yesterday:

Dear SubPress Customer--

Many thanks for your patience as we sorted out a huge batch of traycase orders for more than a dozen lettered editions. Our last supplier went out of business after keeping us on the line for the better part of a year, owing us thousands of dollars and hundreds of cases. We believe we've found a much more reliable manufacturer, one a good friend of mine has been using for over ten years.

As a small token of our appreciation for the long wait, we're sending along a few extra books to everyone who has been waiting for so long and patiently. I hope you enjoy the books. Thanks again for your faith.

With all best wishes,

Bill Schafer
Subterranean Press

In the box containing this letter were four hardcover books, two of which were signed limiteds. This for a wait of perhaps a few months on "The City and The City" lettered edition.

The Empire State Building
The Golden Gate Bridge
The Sears Tower
The War of 1812
The Crimean War
The American Civil War
World War I
American involvement in WWII
The Korean War
The entire run of "Lost"
The album drops for all six of The Doors albums (featuring Nightshade author Ray Manzarek)
The writing of Un Lun Dun, The City and The City and Kraken...combined.

Ditto to what Sydney says.

But hey, no rush Ross. I mean why would you owe us an explanation? You've only had an interest free loan for 5+ years for a project you obviously never had any intention of completing. A project that, as recently as 23 days ago you claimed was, "greenlit, and we're currently sourcing materials." That was obviously a complete and total lie.

Nightshade books has shown nothing but disdain for Mieville fans for 5.5 years, I don't know why I would have expected this farce to end with anything other than a slap in the face, but I did. Shame on me, I won't make the mistake of dealing with Nightshade ever again.

Regrettably, there does not seem to be a mechanism to do so, so I would politely request that you disregard the above. In my anger at Night Shade I acted more rashly than I should have, and I apologize to Bob and everyone else at Sub Press, who are clearly caught in the middle of a very unfortunate situation.

Bill Schafer announced in his Subterranean Press newsletter today that he will be publishing "Perdido Street Station."

"We've just reached agreement to produce signed limited editions of China Mieville's breakout novel, 'Perdido Street Station.' Look for ordering information...soon. We've been in touch with Edward Miller, the original 'Perdido Street Station' cover artist, and he'll be doing some new exclusive work for our edition."

I think it is unlikely that Night Shade Books and Subterranean Press will both be publishing limited editions of "Perdido Street Station." If I am correct, how does Night Shade Books plan to make me whole?

I gave Night Shade Books $500 for a lettered edition of "Perdido Street Station" almost six years ago. I have yet to receive any information from Night Shade Books about "Perdido Street Station," aside from general assurances that NSB will be publishing the book soon. My direct inquiries have been ignored.

Sydney, they've killed the link to these boards from the main Night Shade page; coincidence, I think not.

The only fair way to make us whole is to:

a. secure copies of the Sub Pres edition on our behalf at no additional cost.

b. Refund the average money market rate, compounded monthly, for the years 2005 - H1 2010.

Anything less than this and Night Shade will have confirmed that this was nothing but a cash grab that they never had any intention of fulfilling.

Yes... I just found out that the link to this board on Night Shades website has disappeared. Poof.

Well, I’m still not sure what the formal definition of “early in the week” is, but I am confident that Wednesday, seeing as how it falls in the middle of both the work and calendar week, is, by definition, not “early”. If only there was a way to combine the month, day of the month and year into some sort of numeric representation of calendar time. I’m going to get to work on that…I think I’ll call it a “date”. I think it’s going to be huge, Night Shade, for one, could certainly stand to invest in such an advanced technology.

Are we on Venus? Night Shade certainly seems to be folding under extreme pressure, so perhaps.

Well, the weekend arrives with no information posted. Nor any replies to emails regarding refunds or fulfillment of the book with NS as the middleman for SP.

This despite the fact that SP has not only announced the book on their news blog, but also in their email newsletter... which I must imagine has significant non-zero overlap with Night Shade's customer base.

The collecting world knows, NS. We're all talking about it. Can't we get a word? Something, anything, please? Help stop the rumors.

"Posted on Thursday, July 29, 2010 - 05:25 pm:
An announcement regarding NSB and PERDIDO STREET STATION will be made early next week."

Ross, you've already made a lie of the "early" in the statement above, are you going to do the same with the "next week" part as well?

I'm about at the end of my rope with this garbage, and if there is no resolution by Monday morning my next stop won't be this message board but the California Department of Consumer Affairs (and I recommend that everyone else reading this does the same), which can be found here:

https://app.dca.ca.gov/cru/gencomplaint.asp

To be clear, when I say resolution, I don't mean vague promises and uncertain time-lines. I mean a concrete action plan that will get me the books I ordered five and a half years ago without any further cash outlay on my part.

Enough is enough Ross, we have been beyond patient while Night Shade lied for five plus years, it's time to do the right thing for once.

So now that it's early next NEXT week, any chance that we can get that announcement?

Pretty please?

Way to announce what we already know. How hard is it to communicate what the hell is actually going on?

Has anyone heard from Night Shade? It has been almost a week since their "announcement" and I haven't heard squat from them on what their plans are for my money.

No word yet, but given the above track record, "you’ll be hearing directly from us shortly" is not= promise of haste.

And now it would seem I cannot get a lettered edition of Perdido from Subterranean. Night Shade, you guys didn't even give me a reach-around.

"We’ve received a number of queries from customers who paid Night Shade Books for their proposed edition to see if we’ll be honoring those purchases, or able to guarantee them a lettered edition if they have already purchased one through Night Shade. (We won’t be able to.) Our edition is in no way affiliated with Night Shade Books. Customers should contact them for resolution if they placed an order."

Sub press just put PSS on sale. Only 250 Lettereds so act now. Also, there is a sale if you buy today, $100 off the lettered. Plus, unlike the dipshits at NS I'm guessing they will actually bother to publish the book.

Are we every going to get responses to emails about our orders? NSB has been busy pushing out blog posts, Facebook updates, and simply ignoring customers.

After several e-mails back and forth (which to be fair were initiated by them), I was told on Monday that a check was in the mail. We'll see, but for now I'll assume they wouldn't lie so blatantly in a written communication.

I assumed everyone was in the same boat, but maybe they just wanted to shut me up.

I've not heard anything from them, either at their initiative or in response to emails I've sent.

That sucks, but is hardly surprising considering the bullshit they've pulled for five years. Wish I could help; good luck.

Well, the check has cleared and I am officially done with this stupid company. Best of luck to Hitmouse and anyone else waiting to be made whole. I wish you didn't need it, but that just doesn't seem likely.
