The Australian Horror Writer's Association has announced the shortlist for their 2006 Australian Shadows Award, awarded by the AHWA to the best work of horror fiction (in English) published by an Australian or Australian resident in Australia or overseas. This year's judge is Kim Wilkins, and I've made the shortlist twice!

The full list:

Lee Battersby
"Pater Familias"
Shadowed Realms #3

Lee Battersby
"Father Muerte and the Flesh"
Aurealis #36

Kaaron Warren
"The Grinding House"
CSFG Publishing

Shane Jiraiya Cummings & Angela Challis (editors)
"Shadow Box"
Brimstone Press

Dirk Flinthart
"The Red Priest's Homecoming"
ASIM # 17

The award should be announced some time in March.

Lee, that's cool, but you and Dirk are up against a couple of chunky horror monkeys there. Congratulations.

Personally, I think Shaodw Box will win: it's quite an outstanding achievement. Literally: it really stood out this year compared to everything else within the horror genre in Australia.

I don't really rate Kaaron's story as highly as yourself: I thought it was amongst the weakest stories in her collection. Compared to some of her other works, it stood out as very 'samey' and formulaic

Lee, I read that as Kaaron being nominated for the whole collection, which is also called "The Grinding House", hence my reference to the two chunkies. I just checked the AHWA website and I'm pretty sure that's the case.

Ah, okay. I took it as the story.

I don't know how you'd go about comparing a story with a whole collection. Personally I think Father Muerte's in with a shot... not that I'd be biased in any way:-)

Well, it's up on their site, so I'm sure I can announce that 'Father Muerte & The Flesh' did indeed win the award. You can check out the award and judge Kim Wilkins' comments at www.australianhorror.com/shadows05winner.htm

The half-naked dead chicks are on me!!!!
