Elissa Malcohn - Hermit Crabs:
At first, I thought: "Oh, no! another SF crab story!". Then I began reading and I thought: "Oh, no! another depressed teen suicide story!". But unexpectedly, the more I progressed into the story, the more I enjoyed it; the characterization is good, the flashback structure is well done, the ending is surprising and satisfying. A valuable discovery for me (never heard before of Elissa Malcohn).
Erzebet YellowBoy - Waiting at the Window
Well, that one was a non-event for me. Standard blah blah. Nothing original, a very average slipstream story, without real SF or Fantasy elements. Shouls have stayed in the slush pile. |

Last Short Story says:
From the latest Electric Velocipede, I enjoyed Leslie What's #1, a kind of near-future SF portrayal of a superficial, nasty model, but with enough depth to get past the stereotypical. There's some darkness and some compassion in this short spiky story. I liked it.
And Lisa Mantchev's Perfect Tense is another story that transcends its packaging. Ostensibly the story of a woman who goes back in time to warn her younger self not to make the same mistakes she did, the story then fills itself out and patches in the colours, leaving us with a kind of real-world version of an old trope. Nicely done.

"Hermit Crabs" was the first thing she sent out in ages. She was quite nervous about it, and glad to see that people still enjoyed her writing.
