Last month we went to the art gallery that's on the top floor of our local library. They have a bulletin board for visitors to leave their comments on 3x5 index cards. One card caught our attention, and amused me. It reads:

I don't like art.
I am very disturbed by the work and won't be coming back ever.

We read this before we went in. Having toured the exhibition, and seen photos of local supermarkets and chain hotels (some comment on the changing nature of the periphery of the city), 1000 postcards with the word monument on them, and a plywood cutout of a bishop with a vague bloodstain trickling from it, we couldn't help but wonder if we were missing something, as we were sadly undisturbed.

Also struck us that in the last few exhibitions we'd seen there, if all the signs which gave the titles of the pieces, the artist's name, and some commentary were taken down, it would be hard for someone to walk around and with 100% accuracy point out what was art and what was the building or its fixtures and fittings. Is that an air vent or is it art? Are those two fire extinguishers *really* for the prevention of fires or do they say something about alienation and the creeping commercialisation of emotion?

The mischevious could be tempted to create some signs giving artist's name and title and fixing them next to random objects in the gallery to see if anyone noticed.

This amused me very much when I read it a couple months ago, and it still amuses me.

Which part? The 'I don't like art' message still makes me laugh, whenever I think about it. The rest of it is something that we keep getting tempted to do, but we like the art gallery and it would be ashamed if we got barred from there for label-jacking, or worse, win some kind of prize for our work.
