Soon we will have 32 issues under our belts. Folks have been pushing us to do a Best of Talebones antho for a while now. We want to do one. Right now, all we can say is "soon." Jim Van Pelt, in a post on a different thread, said he'd have to go through his back issues and come up with his own virtual TOC.

Good idea for a thread. :-)

If you're a Talebones subscriber now, or have been in the past, or you've picked up copies from time to time, which story (or stories) would you push to be included in a Best of TB? Easier said than done. Jim alone has--what, six stories that have been in the magazine? Could you pick out his best among those?

And so on...

Hi, Patrick. Is there a possibility of a complete listing of all the TALEBONES issues, their stories and authors existing somewhere on the web?

Whew! That'd be an undertaking. But it might be a good thing for everyone (most of all for Honna and me, being able to see all the stories in one spot come the time we need to make decisions).

I'll get on it when I can and I'll post it on this thread. Feel free to hold off on "nominating" choices, but it could be a while before I can get to it. Thirty-one issues with 6-9 stories a piece. Two hundred plus stories, I imagine!

Well, here they are folks! All the stories, by issue, from #1 through #32. (#32 is not out until later this month.) Thanks, Jim, for helping out with this (pointing me in the right direction)!

I looked at these and thought: Wow...over the years we've amassed quite a bit of fiction, and we've had quite a number of well-known writers in our pages. (Some have become VERY well-known since we first had them in our magazine.)

Let me see, I'd definitely nominate the following for inclusion:

"Edward Bear and the Very Long Walk," Ken Scholes
"Ten Sigmas," Paul Melko
"Still Life With Boobs," Anne Harris

but after that it gets really hard *g*. I can't choose my own stuff.

Aw shucks, Jim. Thanks. I'd say "Its Hour Come Round" or, one of my faves, "Miss Hathaway's Spider" for Mr. Van Pelt. But heck, as others have said before me, he writes perfect short stories so any of them would be amazing additions.

"Miss Hathaway's" is probably my favorite (I wonder why, Jim? :-) )and "Its Hour Come Round" a close second. Honna's favorite is "The Yard God." If ANYone gets two stories in the antho, it'll probably be you Jim.

Ken, "Edward" gets my vote too.

Sure, there are "shoo-ins" --those stories that had specific recognition. "Ten Sigmas" and "Still Life," naturally on strength of reprints and awards. "Love of the True God" by Uncle River was a Nebula preliminary ballot story, as was "Zothique Mi Amor" by Mark Rich. "God of Exile" by Terr McGarry...Ellen VERY ALMOST NEARLY picked it for her Year's Best the year it came out. Gardner came close to picking Jim's "The Pair-a-Duce Comet Casino..." too. :-)

It also might come down to who we can find, too; that is, writers who had stories in early issues that we don't hear about now (or very often) might not get their stories in because they've disappeared.

I'm not familiar with the early issues of the magazine, but with issues I've seen since I started doing reviews ... I'd say you couldn't go wrong with the story in #27 by Jack Cady (R.I.P.).

It is a big list! And think if we'd kept to our quarterly schedule (which we did until the summer of 2000). We'd have had 11 more issues and be up to #43 by now. :-)
