Shemeless self promo: the novel, my 4th, has just gone off for final copyedit (thank God) and is scheduled for the autumn under Bantam in the US and Macmillan/Tor at some point next year. Dunno when yet and probably neither do they.

It is: a kind-of supernatural thriller set in Central Asia, with a 800 year old Russian hero and a heroine who is a redundant rocket scientist. Basic premise is that the Russians, sometime in the 1920s, colonised an adjacent dimension. Now, everything's turning to ratshit and breaking down.

This was such a fun novel to write, for a change, that I'm actually planning a sequel (uncommissioned as yet: I'm contracted to do another couple for Bantam). Hence off to sunny Siberia in July to do a bit of research.

Sunny? Oy.

Ironic thing is, it will be sunny...blazing heat (and I don't do heat) combined with mosquitos the size of dogs. Used to live in the south of this bit, is how I know.

Still, needs must...

And it might even be an improvement on Hinckley, where I'm also now going, BTW.

It is an improvement. I won't say anything about the substitution of mosquitos for the local population of Hinckley, hotel and otherwise, or their canine similarity....

.....or Hinckley's radioactivity.

I gather it isn't the Hinckley that has a nuclear plant, actually. But I'm sure it has one in spirit.

Oh well. At least both Siberia and Hinckley sell vodka, if worse comes to worst.

I've decided that I can always buy a new one.

Though p'raps not from a Russian donor.

Some new brain cells would be nice as well.

Hi Liz,

If new brain cells are available, I'm lining up right behind you.

I'm looking forward to the new novel. I was quite impressed by EMPIRE OF BONES, and I enjoyed THE POISON MASTER enormously--probably the most fun I've had with a novel in some time.

Regards,

JT

Thanks, Jeff - glad you enjoyed it! The brain cells will be available as soon as I can find a suitable donor...

Liz, perhaps some can be found in your cabinet?

Bwahahahahaha!

No brain cells would want to stay in MY cabinet. You'll see why when I post it. (Have just written a draft, actually, so going to leave it overnight).

Liz,

I just finished reading Nine Layers of Sky. I thought I'd drop by and say that I really liked it. Especially the grittiness of the flawed characters and the setting in the former Soviet Republics during the 21st Century.

Respects,
S. F. Murphy

Glad you found it and enjoyed it! :-)

I have a story coming out in Realms of Fantasy soon: BLACKTHORN AND NETTLES, a couple of things in upcoming Asimov's, and various book projects are underway (more on that later).

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. We've apparently been ultraspammed. Is there a resident hacker with a nasty virus they've been itching to test?

Dunno, but some people have such, er, individual screen names it took me a while to figure this out. Thanks for the heads up, Bob.

D'oh!

Oh. I figured you already knew and were taunting them...subtley. I mean, you were, weren't you? Cuz that's how I'm gonna tell the story.

Yes! Subtle, that's me! Taunting! Yes, that sounds good.

Quick, tell the story and we'll gloss over my momentary absence of mental acumen.

I'm posting to tell you that I bought my copy of Nine Layers of Sky (and enjoyed it muchly, thank you) in a truckstop just outside Pickens, Mississippi. They had two on the rack. I stopped in today (best coffee in that area) and the other copy was gone.

Looking forward to the sequel, but for now I'll go find that novel that was nominated for an award of some type. ;-)

Our book discussion group picked Nine Layers of Sky for November's book. That meeting takes place Thursday November 12 @ 7pm. The location is "The Grind" coffee house and gallery, 4124 Main Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Should any of you be in the area on that date, feel free to drop in.

Yes, this is a long shot. But it could still generate a hit or two.
