Apparently research has shown that the brain can correctly read words so long as the first and last letters of misspelled words are in the right place. So a friend sent me this paragraph which looks like gibberish but is perfectly easy to read.
You probably have seen this before, but if you haven't, it explains why we can go over and over a draft without seeing our mistakes.

Cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The human mind understands all that gibberish.

The spam filter thinks it is spam.

You caught me, Byron. Yes, that paragraph is a plot. Once you read it and think it makes sense, you have been permanently warped and converted.

Wrong David, the inhuman mind understands all that gibberish. :-)

Speaking of language and the mind, do we have any inatists or blank-slaters in the house? Anyone like Chomsky's theory that our brains have inate language circuitry, or prefer the notion that it's purely the product of culture? Anyone think Chomsky's psychological inatism contrasts in some ways with his political views...?
