I'm curious about the F&SF covers. Are they always stand-alone art pieces with no ties to the stories contained within the books? Or is an artist sometimes asked to relate the cover to one of the stories?

With our 2005 issues, 9 covers out of 11 illustrated stories in the issues. (The two that did not were the January and August covers.) Out of our 11 issues in 2004, only 1 of them did not illustrate a specific story (that was the March 2004 cover). In 2003, 2 out of 11 (Feb. and May) did not illustrate a specific story.

So in the last 3 years, 28 covers out of 33 illustrated a story in each issue. That's 85% of our covers. Which, I have to admit, makes me wonder if you've looked at F&SF before asking your question.

Bravo, Gordon.

I know that budget constraints limit other magazines but it's wonderful to see your commitment to all the arts that make SF such a rich field.

Thanks, Irene. Just imagine the covers I might get if I could actually afford to pay the artists.

(Sorry, publisher humor.)

Speaking of covers, take a look at this site: http://www.krazydad.com/visco/
