The company we use to ship F&SF to subscribers internationally has asked me if we can try to track delivery times by country in order to pinpoint problems with their service.

So if you're in Canada or overseas and can post here when you receive your issues, that would be most helpful. Just your country and which issue you received.

In fact, I was just wondering if any British or Australian subscribers have received your copies of the March issues yet. The February issues seemed to take a long time in transit.

Canadian Matt, remember those contributor's copies are advance copies. US subscription copies haven't even reached their targets yet.

Andres, thanks for your post. That does make it sound like something delayed the March issues. If your March issue doesn't arrive next week, please email us with your subscription information and we'll take care of it.

Dear GVG,

Here in Tokyo, I am still waiting on the April 2005 issue. I know they always take a while to get here, but I think this time it's longer than usual.

I'll post again as soon as the issue arrives (assuming it hasn't been eaten by sea monsters).

Best,

Gabriel--I'm curious about Gothenburg. Are people who live there, no matter their musical tastes, aware of the city being the founding place of the melodic death metal movement, along with it being the home of bands like movement-starters In Flames and Dark Tranquillity?

I just wonder if it's like how in New Jersey, everyone knows Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi come from here.

Received an early subscription renewal form this morning.

So far, out of the twelve-issues-plus-one-free in my first year's sub - placed in early August - I've received only four mags.

And two of those four - though much appreciated! - were back issue replacements for the Oct/Nov ish that failed to appear.

I'd really really REALLY like to become a regular subscriber to F&SF, based on the stories & articles I've been able to read.

But you'll forgive me if I don't resubscribe until I've received at least 8 of the promised 13 issues...

As I mentioned, we're getting things fixed.

Richard, your subscription should be 12 issues, not 13. A one-year subscription is eleven issues---it includes the Oct/Nov double issue.

Can you email us so we can figure out where the problem with your sub is? We've got several Richard Smith subscribers so it's hard to tell which one you are.

Apologies Gordon & thanks for the reply.

I forgot that Oct/Nov is counted as one double issue rather than two singles.

According to the renewal form, my first year's subscription expires with the Oct/Nov 06 issue, which does indeed make 12 issues including the free one.

Will e-mail your office with my address & subscriber number.

Thanks again.

I feel your pain, Gordon. We had similar problems with shipping IZ to the USA. Interzone #202 arrived everywhere reasonably in time, except in the USA. So we also switched mailing services again.

Oh well.

I'm in the UK and the last mailing I received was January. I dropped a note to Andrew Grossman and a week or so later got a circular response saying tha t March and April are in the mail and the missing February issue is being investigated.

Hopefully things will return to normal soon! I've had problems with at least half of the last year's mailings...

Posted on Saturday, April 08, 2006 - 06:27 am:

For three or four years, we used a firm called Johnson & Hayward for our international shipping. They were very good.

Then they got bought by a larger company, which merged a few months later with an even larger company. We tried working with them, but after months of trying, we had to conclude that we're just too small for them.

So with the February issue, we switched back to the same service we used before Johnson & Hayward. The changeover took some time, but as far as anyone can tell, the February issues all shipped.

The March issues also shipped late and then the April issues shipped on time.

So now we're hearing from some European subscribers that they've received their February issues, other subscribers say they've gotten their April issues but not Feb. or March, and some have gotten their March issues.

As far as we can determine, all three issues shipped to subscribers.

So at this point, I'm honestly not sure what to do. We're losing money right now on our foreign mailings and we'll almost certainly have to raise rates soon. (The post office raised international rates on January 8, 2006.) And the February 06 issue was particularly expensive to mail, for reasons I'd rather not say (to do so might sound like I was running down another business, which isn't my intention). Suffice it to say that we went to extreme measures in order to get issues for the foreign subscribers, for all the good it seems to have done.

So I'm looking into different options now, but at the moment, I'm not finding many. I believe we've got things sorted out on our end so that we won't have any shipping delays again. But the problem is that once we send the magazines out, there isn't much we can do.

And before anyone posts to ask, "Why don't you just send the issue by Air Mail?", let me note that for us to send issues that way, we'd have to charge subscribers an additional $55/year or more, depending on where in the world the subscriber lives. I'm sure some people would pay this much and we might offer this option in the future (I know LOCUS does), but at the moment, I'd rather not start offering multiple rates.

I know a magazine publisher who solved these problems by simply deciding not to accept foreign subscriptions. I don't like that option, but I do ask foreign subscribers to bear with us right now.

Dear F & SF,

My subscribers's copy of the February issue arrived today, 12. April, here in Oslo, Norway.

A small aside: It seems that postal services are getting worse, and at the same time, more expensive. all over the globe. Maybe we shall have to live with it. I for one, wouldn't dream of suspending my F & SF subscription for the sake of some late arrivals!

Best wishes,

Andres---

I'll have to check on other subscribers in Latin America. We've only got three subscribers in Argentina, including yourself, but I know we have plenty throughout South and Central America.

Your subscription renewal has been processed and you're good for another year. I'd answer your question privately, but I figured doing so here would give me a chance to say that it's very common for int'l subscribers to receive two or three renewal notices even after they've renewed. It's just because the renewal notices are generated in advance and often take a long time in the mails.

April issue arrived yesterday. March still to come. This is the last post I want to make here, but do want to make a point. At the risk of sounding corny, F&SF means a lot more to me than just a collection of great stories; I grew up reading this magazine and it has become my major source of stayng in contact with the genres represented. There are only 2 newsagencies I know of in Brisbane carrying the magazine and I much prefer receiving it directly. I have always assumed that being a subscriber was a way of showing solidarity. On the few occasions an issue failed to arrive there is always a successful effort made to make sure I receive it.

Gentlefolk,

Adding another Oz data-point: 2006/06/05, April 2006 issue (#649) arrived here in Adelaide, SA. February and March 2006 issues still unsighted.

Also, back on 2006/08/04, Gordon Van Gelder wrote:

As Gordon notes, Locus offers air-mail subscriptions (which I have). Perhaps just as important, is their distribution method.

I subscribed to Locus via the web but, upon receiving my first airmailed copy discovered my copy was being posted within Australia from Justin Ackroyd's Slow Glass Books, <http://slowglass.com.au/>.

Assuming I'm not unique in this regard it appears Locus is bundling up all their Oz subscription copies and air-mailing them as a single package to Justin in Melbourne, who is then air-mailing them out to each of us from within Oz.

I'm clearly too small a sample size to be particularly meaningful but it's at least anecdotally worth noting I've received every copy of Locus since my subs began but have only now received the first issue of my 2-year F&SF subs (and, completely separately, have just noticed I'm missing the June issue of my current Asimov's subscription as well).

This arrangement between Locus and Slow Glass is transparent to me and, although it likely wouldn't pleasing others in the mail-order trade (eg the folks at Gaslight and Galaxy), if it helps get my copies of F&SF to me in a timely fashion, I'm all for F&SF looking in to something similar.

I mention all this at least partly because, back in March, in some e-mail correspondence with Andrew Grossman (F&SF's Circulation Manager), Andrew suggested a standing order with Justin as an alternative to direct subs with F&SF.

I was tempted (not leastwise because Andrew also offered a full refund at the same time) but didn't. I didn't mostly because I didn't relish the thought of calling Justin; leaving a long message; hoping he had back-issues of the February 2006 issue on hand (by the time this option was mentioned by Andrew that's what it had become); re-ordering my budgeting to cater to a monthly standing order rather than a once-every-two-years splurge and so on.

It's now rather too late for me to make the switch but I'm curious if the folks at F&SF have any data on whether the big parcels they send to Justin for his standing order customers are making it through on time.

Regards,

Brian Forte.

Thanks for your post, Brian.

Yes, Justin's big parcels reach him promptly, although we've had some problems with the ways in which the warehouse ships the copies.

However, I don't know whether it's feasible for Justin to handle fulfillment on our subscription copies. Our number of Aussie subscribers is about three times the number of copies Justin currently received from us.

Just received the long-awaited December issue here in Suffolk, UK.

Don't know why the mag took six weeks longer to get here (seemingly) than to other places in the UK, but I'm so glad it's arrived, cos M Rickert, Matt Hughes & Susanna Clarke are my three fav authors of the past year.

Wishing you all the best for 2007.

Hello from Vienna, Austria!

I ordered a subscription on Monday, 22nd of January, stating that I would like it to start with the January issue, if at all possible.

Today (Wednesday, 31st of January) an envelope arrived with the Jan, Feb & March issues.

It has a sticker saying it was posted in Hoboken on Jan 27 07.
Quite fast for surface mail, I think. :-)

Incidentally, I also pulled an envelope with three old issues garnered up through eBay (Aug 72, Sep 72, Apr 74) out of my mail box today, so I'll have to make up my mind, which of these six issues to read first. Tough choice!

After reading all these posts I'm beginning to suspect the magazine sellers have a friend in customs who sits on them for a while. Some months he likes to read a copy and that variance in reading time accounts for the varying delays, as he can't send all but one copy (the one being read) so they all sit. Solution: slip a credit card thin GPS tracker transponder into each bundle and keep tabs on where they are during transit times. Busted ! LOL

In regards to my query of being in the US half the year and Canada half the year and what to pay for a sub, I will instead just buy F&SF at the news stand and forgo all the mailing delays. I think I can afford the price difference.

2) June 13th June
3) July 14th August
4) August 17th November
5) September 29th September
6) Oct/Nov 21st August
7) December 5th February 2007
8) January 6th February
9) February 26th February

Why the August issue arrived two months after the September issue is one of those mysteries I'd love to see solved.

John and Colin, we'll take care of you this week, after we get more copies in from the warehouse.

Mark, no, they don't all cost $4.00. Because international mail can be so slow, we send out the first issues from Hoboken. Subsequent issues go out by international periodical mail, which costs about a buck an issue. Hope you're enjoying springtime in Paris, reading Gene Wolfe's novella while sipping coffee in a cafe on the Seine.

While I'm posting here, I should note that the US Postal Service made big changes to international mail on May 14. If I understand it correctly, they've done away with International Periodical Mail. This means that we'll have to send copies by Air Mail now. That will mean faster and (I hope) more reliable delivery. Unfortunately, it will also mean we'll have to raise the price of international delivery by approximately five times what we're currently charging.

Here's a mail I received from LOCUS concerning my Locus subsciption, courtesy of the US Postal Service....

"Dear International Subscriber,
We value you as a subscriber and hope you are enjoying your magazine subscription. Earlier this year, the US Postal Service announced they would be raising their rates. With this rate increase came major unannounced changes to their entire International rate structure. International surface mail (sea mail) and international periodicals mail were discontinued. Without those two mailing services, we can only fulfill subscriptions by airmail.
These changes affect your subscription and all of our other international surface mail subscribers. We will be converting all our surface mail subscriptions to airmail. Current Canadian and Mexican subscribers will lose one issue from their periodical rate subscriptions. Our current International surface mail subscribers will receive two airmail issues for every three remaining surface mail issues. If you have any questions, or would prefer to receive a refund of the remaining balance on your subscription, please let us know. Our rates will be going up for first class Canadian subscribers on July 1, 2007. If you renew before then, you will get the old rates.
We are sorry to have to make these changes, we hope you understand why the conversion is necessary, and we thank you for your continued support.

Best,
Locus"

It means a 33% price increase for foreign subbers.
That won't help the magazines...

We're going to have to do something similar, but I haven't worked out the details yet. Our foreign mailing bill for this month is more than four times the bill for last month. I expect a lot of subscribers overseas are going to choose the electronic edition from http://www.fictionwise.com/eBooks/SpilogaleInceBooks.htm instead of going with the print edition.

I just renewed my print subscription two month ago, so I have time to consider my options (even with a reduced lifespan for my current sub).

On the plus side, I will receive my copies earlier (still waiting for the june issue here in France).

Faithfully yours

Fabrice

June issue arrived in Suffolk this morning, thanks.

Re: the price increase and print vs. electronic: I prefer "real" magazines, too. I'm not lucky enough to own a home computer, and reading a Lucius Shepard novella takes quite a few half-hour internet sessions at my local library!

Thanks for the report. I'd been worrying about the June issues. The changes at the US Postal Service caused some delays with the international issues (among other things, we had to apply for new permits) and I hadn't heard when the June issues actually shipped out.

I'll be posting the new rates for international subscribers soon.

June issue arrived in UK this morning.

Regarding the USA mail price increases, perhaps using an alternative shipper? I used to work in the international transport industry many years ago as a manager and there are MANY international shippers offering very competitive rates - indeed, fighting strongly over business. With the correct deal you might even be able to make a saving!

June issue arrived Hertfordshire, UK yesterday.

I hope Hexx is right and there are alternative shippers who can distribute magazines and books at a competative rate. I assume F&SF, Night Shade and the small press generally are looking at options.

Presumably other shippers will be advertising themselves strongly, trying to take advantage of the US Postal Service's retreat from overseas surface mail (perhaps they did it because the competition was too cheap, he suggested optimistically!).

Hugues, encore?

Back when I worked for the bilingual Parliament of Canada, my paycheques used to come in an envelope bearing that name, the French spelling of Hughes. Fortunately, the people who delivered them were not officious about it, so I didn't starve.

Dear sir,

My June issue arrived safe and sound in the third week of June on Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. Ik hope you can indeed work some form of alternative shipping out. One of the charms of reading is holding an actual magazine on one's hand. I don't mind waiting for the magazine to arrive either.
Good luck with this problem.

Gordon,

I've seen in a french bookstore a magazine called "Fiction", a "french edition of F&SF", that seems quarterly and with both stories from F&SF and french features. (reminds me of an old french "revue" called Fiction who run from the 50's to the mid 80's.). Are you part of it, or do they just buy stories from F&SF?

Anyway, nice move. The offer of short fiction in France is small, except for "big" authors collections books.

Yes, we're a part of it. The late and much-lamented Patrice Duvic helped revive Fiction and Andre-Francois Ruaud has been doing a great job in running the revived French edition of F&SF. Spread the word about it---they still haven't developed a good foothold on the market, from what I hear.

We also have editions in Russia, Israel, the Czech Republic, and there's one in the works in Poland. And we're affiliated with the great Japanese magazine Hayakawa's. I miss the German editions we used to have when Wolfgang Jeschke ran Heyne Verlag, but sic transit gloria mundi.

As a long-standing subscriber, who has received today, 25 July 2007, the May issue, though the September issue got here a few days ago, but July and August are still nowhere to be seen, I think you should reconsider the distribution mechanism/agent.
I have never seen such a sequence of random events, and I am an experimental physicist...
It has gotten to the point where essentially every few months I check what got here and what didn't.
This is not acceptable, I am sorry.
Ah yes, this is not the UN Antarctic Survey Station, it is Belgium...

Update one. July issue arrived on 30 July to Belgium.
Cheers and fireworks...
I have now seen the dumb USPS decision to stop offering international bulk magazine rates.
Actually I couldn't care less how much it costs to get it here, as I want a paper magazine.
I understand that it might be a problem for the publisher, though. Any solution in view, as using something different from the USPS?

so, that's perfectly acceptable, IMO.
the confirmation mail advised me 8-10 weeks, so obviously I'm happy to have gotten it much sooner than that.
