One of our subscribers is looking for this book:
I am pretty sure the title was one word starting with either "un" or "in".
The main character tries an ancient ritual: first he goes and buys a live chicken, then he puts on this drum music and kills it in a sacrificial manner, then proceeds to cut himself, and then he turns a twig in a jar into a krait (small venomous snake) in a jar.
He has an Indian professor friend who helps him.
There are these aliens or something leading him around in an attempt to save the world from their mother.
But at the end it is all a ruse ... just something for the supernatural childrens' amusement.

That sounds like one of Robert Bloch's stories, but I don't remember it as being a novel.

I'm rather concerned that Alan hasn't found this yet...
