Rick Klaw
Posted on Saturday, February 15, 2003 - 02:08 pm:

Welcome to the message board to discuss all things Klaw. But who is this Klaw and why does he have his own discussion area?

I am Klaw.. of the Rick variety. (Not to be confused with my long dead and more famous grandfather Irving or the villianous master of sound that menaces the Fantastic Four.) I've been many things over the years: An editor, bookseller, critic, columnist just to name a few. I've edited 17 books (3 with Blackbird Comics and 14 with Mojo Press) and was for 16 months I was the fiction editor for RevolutionSF.

Currently, I write the popular "Geeks With Books" column for SFSite plus reviews for places like The Austin Chronicle and RevolutionSF. My first book GEEK CONFIDENTIAL: ECHOES FROM THE 21st CENTURY is coming out in September from Monkey Brains, Inc.

I live in Austin, TX with my wife Brandy and our two cats.

My columns can be viewed at http://www.sfsite.com/geeks01.htm

More info on Monkey Brains, Inc can be had at http://www.monkeybrainbooks.com/

As for why I have my own message board? Well the fine folks at Night Shade and Jeff Vandermeer asked me, so they figure there must be somethng to say. If you have some comments about my columns or reviews or whatever and feel like sharing with class, feel free to post it here. I look forward to it.

Hey, Rick! Wow! A message board of your very own. Congratulations!

My Rick Klaw fan moment: I really enjoy your columns on books and publishing. They're really well written and show a lot of reflection and thought. Not at all what I would have expected from the grinning guy I met in Austin at that convention who...

<g>

Wow, I'm the first to post here, huh? Was it as good for you?

The grinning guy who ranted about everything?

Thanks for the kind words, Judi.

Just wanted to say I've enjoyed reading the Geeks with Books column so far. Keep up the good work.

You mentioned in the first post your grandfather was Irving Klaw. You don't mean the photographer, do you? One of the guys partly responsible for introducing the world to the fabulous Bettie Page? Or are you just pulling my leg?

My grandfather is indeed Irving Klaw, one of the guys partially responible for introducing Betty Page to the world.

From my foreword to GEEK CONFIDENTIAL:

My grandfather was a pornographer. He practically invented the softcore fetish film. Irving Klaw is one of the responsible parties for the popularity of pinup icon Betty Page. He died of stupidity two years before I was born. Klaw woke one morning with a terrible pain on his right side. He was at the doctorís before 9 A.M.

ďMr. Klaw, you are suffering from appendicitis. Donít panic, but you need to go to the hospital. Yes, you have time to go home and pack a bag.Ē Thatís probably what the doctor said.

What my grandfather probably heard was: ďMr. Klaw, you are suffering from appendicitis. Itís okay for you to go to work and deal with this later. Donít panic.Ē Itís the only explanation that makes sense. Around 6 P.M., Irving Klawís appendix ruptured and he was dead soon after.

Mr. Rick Klaw,

I would like to ask you a few questions, some about you and some about your grandfather. my email is jagr1pooh@netzero.net.

My late aunt Joan Rydell was a model for your grandfather and Paula. She married one of their photographers Jack (John) Bradley also passed now.

Please contact me and share with me anything you can about both of them and their relationships with your grandfather and Paula or even Betty. I am trying to obtain as much information about them all for family history.

My Aunt also used a name Eve Rydell before modeling for them, back when she was in all the magazines, flirt, titter, whisper, wink, beauty Parade.

I so look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Robert T. Reddell (the real spelling)
