I'm familiarizing myself with Marvel Comix characters, having been asked if I would like to submit a proposal for a novel based on one of the X-Men. It's a for-hire assignment, straight fee, no royalties. But it's an interesting proposition.

Which character are you putting together a proposal for?

Wolverine. We're both Canadian.

Well, theoretically he's Canadian... His origin has been written 5 or 6 times. :-)

I still have the Wolverine limited series, last I checked they were ~$30 each.

That's pretty cool. Is it more lucrative than your Black Brillion advance but with no royalties, less potential income? I'm curious about the For Hire market. I realize I'm asking about your financials so feel free to generalize and be somewhat vague.

I'll be vague, since I don't have a deal and may not get one, and at this point the only figure on the table is what the publisher would offer.

It's more than I've received for an advance on any of my books so far, but substantially less than I've been paid for ghosting people's memoirs. And it's a pittance compared to what I used to get for writing CEO speeches.

It's rent and groceries money, that's all. But it would be a fun assignment.

As my old mom always said, "What are we here for if not to help each other?"
