Hello Matthew,
Glad to hear you're done with the Luff Imbry novel The Other.I will be buying that and I also have the third Henghis Hapthorn novel ordered. The latest F+SF is just a couple of days away from hitting the stores around here so I'll have another short story to read.
Please keep the books coming, Thanks.

Thanks, Rande. I should have another book deal to announce in the next few weeks.

And if you're looking for more Luff Imbry in the meantime, PS Publishing will bring out the novella, Quartet and Triptych, in January.

When and where can I buy "The Other"?

Your "Grolion of Almery" in _Songs of the Dying Earth_ was practically perfectly Vancian, BTW.

Thank you, Frances. The Other will be out from Underland Press next spring, probably April.

The first two Henghis Hapthorn books, Majestrum and The Spiral Labyrinth, are available from Night Shade Books now. The third novel, Hespira, is supposed to appear at the end of October. People say they are also quite Vancian, though with a strong flavoring of P.G. Wodehouse, who was also one of Vance's inspirations.

The first chapters are on my web site at http://www.archonate.com

I am dying to buy _The Other_. I just read the Luff Imbry story "Enemy of the Good" in PostScripts. In some ways you are a better writer than Vance, stronger in plotting and characterization.

However, I now have to add to my ongoing curiousity about Jeff Vandermeer's real feelings about mushrooms, that of your real feelings regarding casaba melons.

By the way, when will _Quartet and Triptych_ be out? I can't find this on the PS Publishing website and assume it has been rescheduled.

I borrowed the casaba melon reference from a book I remember from thirty years ago -- at least I remember the title: A Melon for Ecstasy.

I haven't heard anything about a rescheduling of Q&T, but I've sent Pete Crowther a query.

There'll be another Imbry story -- "Another Day in Fibbery" -- in the upcoming Postscripts double issue.

Here are all the Imbry appearances so far:

# "The Farouche Assemblage*," Postscripts Magazine #6, Winter 2005; chapbook, Payseur & Schmidt, Seattle, June 2007
# "The Meaning of Luff*," The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, July 2006
# "Nature Tale*," Postscripts Magazine #8, Fall 2006
# "Passion Ploy*," Forbidden Planets, an anthology from DAW Books, 2007
# "The Eye of Vann,*" Postscripts Magazine 15, 2008
# "Enemy of the Good,*" in Enemy of the Good and Other Stories, an anthology from PS Publishing, Hornsea, Yorks, 2009
# "Quartet and Triptych,*" (novella), PS Publishing, Hornsea, Yorks, January, 2010
# "Another Day in Fibbery*," in Edison's Frankenstein, an anthology from PS Publishing, Hornsea, Yorks, 2009

Thank you, Fran. I honestly didn't remember anything about A Melon for Ecstasy but the title and the obvious implications. Now I've gone and looked it up and am reminded that I went through a lengthy black humor phase in my teens and early twenties, which means it's closer to forty years since I read the book. Which means I'm old.

While we're waiting for Underland Press to bring out the novel, PS Publishing is about to release Quartet and Triptych, a Luff Imbry novella. To stir some interest, I've put the first 5,000 words on my web page at http://www.archonate.com/qt

I finished Quartet & Triptych. As I said, one of your best, with more emotional depth than some other Luff Imbry stories and an interesting plot. I think it would film well, if the world it exists in could be conveyed. I am hoping there's, not exactly a sequel, but some other novella that explores Luff Imbry entering a new phase of his career.

Fran: I'm glad you liked it

No sequel, but I've handed in one called The Yellow Cabochon that will be out from PS next year. Imbry gets tangled up in a scheme to forge copies of jewelry that would otherwise be entombed with the deceased owners. Then things, as ever, go awry.

There will be three Imbry novellas from PS, each published separately, then combined as an omnibus in the fourth year.

I will, but can you tell me anything about your mystery/crime fiction? Is it in the same style as your fantasy?

Fran: The short answer is, no. I have written crime in a hardboiled style (some short stories) and in a more middle-of-the-road style that's in the same ball park as Donald Westlake's or Lawrence Block's work.

Since you've given me a link that leads to an email address, I've sent you a sample.

Hi Matthew,
Hopefully at some future date a pub. will put all the short stories of Luff Imbry together in one book collection. I will buy a few copies to give to friends for presents. :-)

This may or may not be of any use to you, but there is a free Yahoo Self-Publishing group that discusses all kinds of stuff:

Thank you, Rande:

In the next little while, all of the Imbry stories should start appearing on Angry Robot Books's e-store. I've written seven of them so far, besides the novellas, and most have appeared in Postscripts.
