Great news today, folks. Just got word from Sean Wallace at Prime Books that he wants to publish a collection of my short stories!!!

The name of the collection is Gunning for the Buddha, from the leadoff story, one of my favorite stories I've unleashed on the world.

Sean doesn't waste any time, either. Half an hour after emailing me, he sent out the Prime Newsletter with Gunning for the Buddha listed as the most recent acquisition. And he even has a mockup of the possible cover art, which you can check out on my web journal.

Tentative release date is mid 2004. So by next summer, I could be holding my first honest-to-garsh book in my hands. Yeah baby!

More details to come soon, like the ToC, I promise!

Thanks, Bob and John! I'm quite pleased, and a little shocked.

John, I think I may have a story for you, by the way...

Thanks, folks! I just got word this weekend that writer John Kessel has agreed to write the introduction! I'm quite happy about that -- John was one of my writing teachers at both NC State and Clarion, so he knows my stuff pretty well, plus he's just a damn fine writer.

Thanks, Karen!! I'm really pumped up about it, and still a bit shocked -- it happened really fast!

And hey, three of my stories reprinted in the collection were first published at good ol' Strange Horizons!

Hey -- my Clarion teacher James Patrick Kelly kindly agreed to write a blurb for my collection.

Once again, Jim shows us all what a great guy he is in addition to being a kick-ass writer. He embodies the notion of "paying it forward."

And the story collection is moving forward -- John Kessel wrote a really fine introduction, one I'm quite proud of, and he had some insightful things to say about my writing (things I'm not sure I even realized about it!). Very cool.

Also signed the contract and sent it back to Sean at Prime. So everything is in place -- stories, cover matter, intro, Afterwords, acknowledgements, even the author photo is in place. It's all over but the shoutin'...

Looking forward to the finished product!

This is nifty -- a blurb from sf/f writer James Patrick Kelly for my story collection:

"Don't be looking for bold starship captains or warrior maidens wielding magic swords in GUNNING FOR THE BUDDHA. Michael Jasper serves up something refreshingly different: a heady brew of ordinary folks making tough decisions at the far edges of reality. Spend some time with these stories and you're bound to bump into people you know who find themselves in places you've only dreamed about."

Sweet!

Well crap, hit a roadblock. The cover artist we were trying to get for my short-story collection didn't want to cooperate, so she bailed on us. That's the only thing holding us up -- everything else is ready.

Still hoping for a July 2004 release for GUNNING FOR THE BUDDHA.

One word, Mike.

Crayons. Try doing it with crayons.

I'm kidding. Don't do that.

It is always something with life's projects, isn't it?

Mike, the only artist I'm even remotely familar with in the SF field is Mike Cope, of Copetoons. I don't know that you want your cover looking like a comic book though.

Mike, my belated congratulations on the story collection. I didn't catch wind of it, even though you've got a space on the same messageboard that I'm on, until Jamie (my, ahem, son)informed me that he was going to be doing the cover for it. So if I start hanging around here some, please forgive me . . . for catching on to your work so tardily and for waiting until Jamie clued me in on what was going on here.

I'm excited about this big time, too.

Hi Mike! Thanks for dropping by -- I've enjoyed your fiction for a while now (though I don't see enough of your stories around, hint, hint). BRITTLE INNINGS was excellent, and a stroke of genius with your first baseman character. :-)

No need to ask for forgiveness. Do hang around all you want!

Just got the official confirmation from Sean Wallace at Prime Books that my story collection GUNNING FOR THE BUDDHA is definitely coming out in time for World Con this Labor Day. Sweet.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to make it there for time and financial reasons. But I'll be doing some fun stuff to help kick off the book launch.

Including a big-ass party here at our house in Raleigh sometime in early September! Everyone's invited!

My short-story collection creeps closer to becoming a real book you can hold in your hands -- it's available for pre-order!

You can buy it for $25.95 at Shocklines or $23.95 at the very very cool bookshop (run by my new hero Neil Clarke ) Clarkesworld. :-) :-)

Neil at Clarkesworld should have some signed copies available in September as well, if you dig that sort of thing.

Neil's been very supportive of Electric Velocipede; he's got a great thing going on there. I like Matt @ Shocklines, too, but Neil is still growing while I feel Matt is pretty established. Plus Neil runs all sorts of discounts.

Can't wait to see it.
