Wednesday's total: 1114 words on moving our hero from the hive-hotel to a smuggler ship. And a bit on an increasingly pivotal character who's a hybrid between a human and an energy-based lifeform.

Tuesday: goose egg whilst recuperating from gastro-intestinal hell (I'm won't let it get me too far down as I seem to be in good company).

Day 16, reporting in. What Mike calls "free words, baby" because they were written at work. 1600 of them, approximately. And worked out a tricky logic nit.

Also went back and retabulated my word count, from the MSWord count to the regular SMF page x 250 and got a lovely big number.

Okay, finally getting back into the groove of this writing thing, only 2 weeks late! Did some major jamming on the pesky chapter 25, and now I think I may be able to conquer it after all.

Total words, more or less -- 3,700

Novel words, mostly revised and ready for prime time -- 82,400

Can you say "Woo-hoo"???

I won't be around till Monday now because I have family over, not gotten to the point where my writer selfishness has kicked in, maybe it is a fantasy? Maybe a few days away will do me good and get the hunger to write back... I hope so!

Anyway be back on Monday with more!!! :o)

Checking in on Day 17. Hrm. About 20 words, I think. Nope, there's no zero missing, not even two zeros missing. Just a complete and total lack of time and now I'm going to bed.

On the plus side, my writing group met tonight and we disssss(cuss)ed the first two chapters of my novel-in-progress. In very helpful and inspiring ways.

It's the chapter that wouldn't be rewritten!

Back from Bouchercon. It was great!! Met a lot of interesting people (authors, readers, agents). Ate a lot of bad food. Drank much. Slept little.

Wrote ... not a word. My laptop went into the safe in my hotel room when I arrived and I didn't take it out again until I packed up to leave this morning.

But I do have a lot of inspirtation and many scenes clogging my brain. I desperately need to download. I was WAH today, finishing up now, and ready to write.

Expect some progress from me soon, my friends!

Till then,

I've been doing this an odd way -- I outlined the finale of Part One in greater detail. Then I gathered all pertinent material I had written while in Dublin and have since been beefing it up, editing, molding to fit into the current plot, and cutting out the bad bits. It's been an interesting process, although I imagine it will be much nicer to get to a point one day when I will be writing brand spankin' new material in a linear way. Heh.

Right now, Chapter 6 is 26 pages strong for the moment and I need to write two little scenes to go in there from scratch.

But progressing, I'm progressing!

back on line after a weird week, instead of working on the novel, i reworked a novella (with the help of mike), wrote a last chapter to another novel (i've been claiming it was 75,000 words -- now at least it's over 70), stopped writing for a few days to bury a friend and wonder why i was bothering to write, then remembered i wrote to get over things like my dead friend and went back to work on this novel. i figured i'd do a minimum of 30k on it this month, and still expect to make 25k. right now my t__ p___ character is up on the roof about to committ infidelity with a red head.

OK, novel has now been revised and dispatched to editor, much to my relief.

I am more or less confined to the house with what seems to be either a cold or the flu, and intended to chill out today, but for some unknown reason got bitten by the mainstream book that has been in the pipeline for a bit and decided to start writing that. Done 8000 words today and believe me, it's surprised me more than it will you.

I got some work done last night because of the noise of fireworks going off about me. I love our neighbourhood! *She says behind gritted teeth*

Donna, boy, do I sympathise. We have fireworks and also, last night, a group of young things (and I mean 'things') throwing all the cones and protective barriers from the current engineering works into the road, so that all passing cars hit them, from 3-6 am.

Wow, Liz, 8K is like amazing!

Everyone else, folks you are rocking!! :-)

I have written absolutely zero for the last two weeks it seems (days? who's counting days?) but there have been some Major Things happening in my life, mostly Good Things (can you say a total reorganization of existence as I know it?), and writing has taken a temporary back seat, at least until the end of NEXT week....

I will try my darndest to get something done now, but my mind is certainly on other matters.

Also, it's not like October is not a good month for writing (usually it is my best) but *this* October has turned into a Major Month (TM).

Anyway, for possible new updates in the interim, see my online web journal here:

Mark, the country is the UK, the time of year is coming up to Nov 5th but in recent years people have started firing these things off from about the end of August. In York theyíre having trouble with telephone boxes being blown up using fireworks. Yes folks we are a civilised country---kind of! *Shame-faced* at being a Brit!

Congrats, Vera at having CdL do your introduction of your book, Iím wildly impressed he is an awesome writer! You are too of course!!! I hope all the bedlam is positive bedlam and not of the bad variety :-)

New words today are not as many as yesterday, but I am still pleased, itís 1000 more words than I usually manage. Looking to have the first draft completed for mid November and I am on track for that at this pace. I have roped in a few peeps to read it and give criticism so I can actually rework it into something resembling a book, although I have picked up on a handful of flaws as I have written new scenes, the hard part comes when I have to try and get my efforts published. Aaaaaargh.

I agree with Nancy, I wish October had several more weeks in it. I have really enjoyed this dare, itís been fun but at the same time productive in a way that I have never been before. Could do with another one when I start my next one!

I donít mind fireworks but this is any time of the day or night and they are like mortar fire! My poor dog has taken refuge underneath the bed, we hardly ever see her these days. At least if it is one or two nights or even a week of it the dogs and cats can avoid it.

Anyway, got an early start today and managed a nice total. Got a few continuity issues that need ironing out, thatís what comes of writing non-linearly but theyíre easily sorted.

donna, fireworks are not allowed here, although, when i lived in wyoming, you could take your sidearm into the bar. (i'm in arizona now, where most people leave the gun in the car in case someone gives you a hard time on the freeway.)
did another 3,000 on my worldcon novel over the weekend, bringing my total on the new novel up to about 30k for the month -- and then got a call from caitlin blasdell, who has agreed to be my agent for Big Burn, but thinks this worldcon idea stinks. and i think she's right. writing about a science fiction convention is too much of an in-joke, too small a frame. but i may take my 30k and rewrite it in a much cooler setting sometime in the near future.
in the meantime, i'm going to have to drop it and go to the rewrites of Big Burn. tell you all about it on friday, mike!

Nothing, nada, nohow.

Waiting on pins and needles for the closing of escrow that could change my life.

Was supposed to know today, but noooooo, more stupid technicalities. It *has* to all be done by the end of the month or else start over.

*shudder*

ACK! Nothing. No progress. I'm so ashamed for presenting such a bad first impression.
Though, I have been working on posting my Bouchercon journals, which are not complete, but feel free to browse...

Not done anything since last I posted but I have a dare total of 23k which I am damn proud of. The rest of the week is quality time with my husband so I doubt I'll get much more done.

Onwards and upwards for next month, I have set myself a challenge and I intend to stick to it. Finish the first draft which I don't think is far off now. And pick my next project out of the pile of ideas I have!

Been a scream, and thanks to the dare I have learnt that little and often like so many other things in life is the best way to go! Well maybe not in death, parts falling off here and there would be a tad shocking to say the least. Bit Monty Python isn't it? Tis merely a flesh wound, cum 'ere and I'll knaw yer ankle!

I thank you... Exit stage door left..... Aaaarrrgh Okay that's the broom cupboard. Exit stage door right..... And she was gone.....Maybe.....

Yesterday: 3100
If I can work in 2500 (thereabouts) today I'll have the 30k I'm shooting for.
And today is a really busy day...

Flunked the last day of the dare with a mighty 0 on the novel, but wrote a short story at 5K instead. So not too shabby.

And a final 1,900 words to bring me up to 20,000 for the month.

I reached my goal!

Well, 635 words for yesterday, zip for today, and that's the end of the dare.

And now, I'm going back to short stories for a while.

Well, I made it to 30k on the book (not including the outline) and that was the latest goal.
Turns out I only needed 2100 words for this final day to get there (only, she says, sheesh).

Thank you so much, everyone! What a great forum and wonderful (challenging, frustrating, rewarding) month.

Well, I'm off to the NaNoWriMo for another one despite that, like Andreas, I'm eager to get back to short stories.

Days 30 and 31, 2000 words, approximately, on the prologue, of all things.

Grand total for the novel dare:

New words this month: 37768!

The novel stands at about 61K (MS Word count) and about 74K (SMF count).

Thanks for setting up the dare, Mike! It was a great learning experience for me, and I've definitely broken through on the novel block.

And congratulations to everybody who participated!

Hey, fantastic work, everyone! Even me. ;-)

I am going to continue the marathon in my own newsgroup and topics for November. October was pretty much a wash, and the events that made me crazy are not even concluded and are *still* making me crazy (though they are supposed to be done on Monday which I hardly believe).

In any case, I will be continuing the November Dare there, on the same terms.

Thanks for letting us all play here, Mike! :-)

Nice work, everybody! Thanks for playing.

Just back from World Fantasy in DC, and actually got almost 5,000 words written in the mornings (all but Sunday, when I was nursing a mother of a hangover).

Total words for the Dare -- 14,200.

Not bad for a VERY hectic and bumpy November.

Now... back to writing.
