Got official word from Playboy -- I'm gong down on assignment to San Luis Obispo in a couple of weeks to hang out with Chuck Liddell, the UFC light-heavy champ, for a few days, after which I'm to write a profile. Jesus loves me...a little, anyway.

The guy's a millionaire. I don't think he's worried about a bad profile. But maybe...

I've done these things before, and I've only had one guy hate me. It made it really tough to do the piece.

Well, they've had a story of mine in inventory for just over a year. But this should be more timely. I don't know, really, but they want to run this pretty quick. Before the fall, I reckon.

Margaret Atwood, Nadine Gordimer, and now Lucius Shepard?

I don't get the reference...What do you mean?

Posted on Sunday, April 01, 2007 - 08:30 am:

No reference. Atwood and Gordimer are both high-profile, critically acclaimed mainstream authors. (Atwood publishes SF, but it's not called that. God and Margaret forbid.) I'm used to seeing your name in Asimov's, various Datlow anthologies, Nightshade publications, etc., and the division between genre and mainstream seems to have widened and ossified. Plus, supposedly Playboy no longer accepts unsolicited or speculative fiction submissions (though what the hell else could Atwood's last be called?), so you have enough cache with Playboy editors to be included in the shortlist that includes a Nobel Prize winner, despite having made a reputation in and identifying yourself as speculative fiction.

I think it's cool is what I'm saying.

I didn't realize Atwood or Gordimer had published in Playboy, but I knew that Cortazar and others had. So yeah, it's a prestige market and over the years I've published I don't know how many stories, six, seven, eight, so they're familiar with my work. But this is the first journalism piece I've done for them and I've got a new editor, so I'm a little anxious.

I didn't know you'd published there before. Until the lasy eighteen months or so, I didn't read it. But then they offered me a student discount -- $10 per year -- and who could say no to that?

I've published there since 87, I think. Some of the stories were The All-Consuming, Fire Zone Emerald, Beast of the Heartland, The Sparring Partner...a few others.

The other profile I did that got me in trouble was Billy Bob Thornton. We got along great and the piece I wrote was a fucking blow job, but he took exception to one thing I wrote and got pissed off over nothing.

I just said he snapped at someone while in a bad mood. The truth is, you write a piece on someone and chances are they're not going to like it--all they're gonna say is the one negative thing you said.

LS, walked into my local newsstand and fell in line behind a couple of American Gothic Iowa turistas to buy the new Playboy and an Esquire with "The Sexiest Woman Alive" on the cover.

I hope I'm never looked at that way by anyone ever again...

My point is I enjoyed the Liddel article immensely. It was, as they say, even better than the pictures. :-)
