Hmmm, I should have forgone being a big wise guy and listened to Lynn about Rutgers. It seems to me something similar to this, not taking her advice and regretting it later, has happened in the past... often. As the Mick said, "Women weaken legs."

The Mick? Mantle? O'Rourke? That's am old boxing truism or old wives tale...

On paper, Rutgers blows out KState, but you never now how a team who looked to be headed for bigger things will react in a minor bowl.

The Mick, Burgess Meredith, from Rocky. I'm dithering movie quotes while Lynn now clearly sees victory ahead.

To Whom It May Concern:

My long national bowl week nightmare is at an end and my plan to win by losing has apparently worked with a vengeance. Now I can go into the New Year's weekend content in the knowledge that my ability to pick winners in football is comparable to my ability to fix my car's engine or put together mechanical stuff. What a relief! There was so much pressure!

Now I can just go back to watching DVDs of The Wire in peace.

Yours Sincerely,

Jeffrey "Can't Pick 'Em" VanderMeer

Big day for me--got 100 points riding on the games today.

Of course, I'm looking at my picks and wondering what the heck I was thinking--I put so little on the line on the early games because I didn't know the teams. Sigh...

Well, Jeff, you're braver than I. How many points did you get?

Yeah, the early games are the easiest to pick. But these are still early games, so hopefully there won't be too many surprises. I've got one point riding on Kentucky, but as I recall I have substantial points on the others.

Er, I don't think "brave" is the right word. It's straight up. If I bet on a team I believe in, I don't believe in taking the points. It's kind of a superstition thing.

Whenever I bet with points, I lose, which means Florida loses. The three times I bet straight up, I won. Doesn't mean anything, but I am superstitious.

Definitely doesn't help all the time. Watched the Florida-Auburn game a few years back with a rabid Auburn fan. He had a luck hat, jacket, shirt, shoes, etc. He had to sit a certain way, etc.

By half-time, Auburn was losing badly and so he started getting rid of his hat, his shoes, etc. As if it were ballast keeping Auburn down. Thankfully, he decided to keep his lucky shirt and pants on....

Apparently, going by past performance, it's okay when I bet with points. But I don't often wager on teams I have a sporting affection for.

As for your Auburn fan, I don't think I'd let a guy like that in my house. :-)

I thought I was dead when OSU was down 14 in the 4th, and then when the OSU coach decided to go for 2, I was screaming at the set NOOOO!!! He saved my day...Clemson choking against Kentucky is the first one that really hurt, and if OSU would've lost to Mizzou, it might've been over for me. Now I should be okay until the BADgers choke against Arkansas. (Actually, I think we're going to kick their butts--we match up well against this kind of offense)

Yeah, those Michigan slobs are so slow...got news for you, the Big Ten is no longer this slow and plodding conference. Hasn't been in five years or more. Our team speed is just fine. (Well, as long as we aren't including the QB in that)

This Houston-USC game is CRAZY! I had hoped the ol' ball coach would pull this out, for now, who knows. On that last score, at that point in the half, if the guy is gonna smoke you that bad, just pull him down. It's 15 yards in college and there wasn't that much time left. Heck, they might've been better off just tackling the receivers on every play. Probably would've run out of clock...

Obviously, there is no defense. But Holz is right. SC is the more consistent team. If Houston depends on the big play, they'll likely lose.

I believe. KY was my 1 point special. :-) Clemson was on a down, and KY wanted to be there. I should have risked more. The OSU-Mizzou gane was amazing, as was, apparently, TT's comeback and Bama's near victory. But the majority of the games have been blowouts and boring. If I'd followed mine I'd be doing better. Something kept telling me to pick Penn State, for instance, but I refused to listen. I knew the Auburn game was going to be close, because Auburn can't score, so I don't mind losing that one. But I've had a couple of games where I didn't listen to the voices in my head. I did, however, heed the one that suggested I plot to kill the pope.

Here was my strategy -- listen up and learn what not to do. Games I know both teams, pick what I think. Games I don't know the current teams too well, pick on rep. Games I never heard of either team (SJSU v. NMU) pick with record. It's worked just dandy, huh. :-)

I like watching the smaller conferences, which is why I do pretty good early--the later games are usually better matchupa and harder to predict. But I tend to roll against my instincts. Case in point, I know Lloyd Carr is shit in big games, so I gotta figure USC is gonna win. Sometimes that works out anyway, but not in this one, I don't think.

You mean, them Badgers, who were the third place team in the Big Ten, whose defense kicked the crap outta the SEC Finalist--just one year after we went into the same Bowl game, were 14-point dogs to Auburn, and whooped their asses by 14 points? Those 12-1 Badgers who'll finish the year with the second-best record in the land?

Just looking for some clarification...

don't get me wrong, I'm happy the College of New Jersey (aka Rutgers) finally had a great season (which I predicted way back in August), but there's a difference between a Cinderella team, and one that's a legit top ten every year. Ooops, make that Top Five! :-)

They were bad Badgers. If Arkansas had had a sophomore Mustain at QB, they would have crushed you. Your team speed is not good, despite what you say. And I think third best is more likely, what with an unbeaten Boise and OSU.

I have, I believe, 80-some points left. And there are others who have more and are close to the lead. If you win out, you may not win. But you are a contender.

Oklahoma was my 26 point game.

Posted on Tuesday, January 02, 2007 - 10:28 am:

Yeah, we played bad, but the fact that we played bad and still won speaks volumes. Y'know in the third quarter, Ark began their five drives from their own 47, on average, and we held them to zero points. And I could've sworn it was BADger who ran down Heisman runnerup McFadden from behind, thus preventing a touchdown, and in fact, after the missed FG, prevented them from scoring--and probably saved the game. And other than that 45 yard run, McFadden had 18 carries for 44 yards. And if you take out Jones' two big gainers, he had 11 for 38 yards. That's doin' the job, for the most part. This was one of the best run teams in the country, who averaged five big gainers (20+ yards) per game over the course of the season. They got their three against us, and we held up. And while there was the occasional bad throw, there was also some really tight coverage on key plays. Ike shutdown their best receiver all day, and that had nothing to do with the QB. Cassillas was in the TE's hip pocket on most plays, getting the pick and deflecting two others that were pretty much on the money.

And don't tell me about nagging injuries for McFadden. Our starting MLB has played on two bum ankles, but still racked up 9 tackles, with 7 solo. Stocco had a shoulder separation on his throwing arm. PJ Hill was having back problems. Beckum was nursing a pulled groin. Everybody's dinged up this time of year. It's who performs, and who wins. And that would be the 12-1 BADGERS, baby! It wasn't pretty, but this ain't no beauty contest. :-)

Posted on Tuesday, January 02, 2007 - 10:45 am:

Yah, it had something to do witth the quaterback -- he's too inexperienced to read his checkdowns and that would have loosened up Ike's coverage if he had been able to do so.

Hill was terrible. That's what I mean about team speed. The O line was stout, but you scored only one offensive touchdown. The truth remains, there's scant difference between these teams as presently consituted. One twitch the other way and Ark would have won. Next year, they'll beat you silly. And don't give me, we've got that great new qb from KState. I watched the guy who beat him out versus Rutgers. Good luck. :-)

Posted on Tuesday, January 02, 2007 - 11:03 am:

LOL. Well, I hope you're wrong about Everidge (the KS QB)--I believe he left more out of being in a new coach's doghouse and not being given a chance (that's the official story and I hope it's true). Though Tyler Donovan showed enough to give us hope there'll be real competition this spring.

And Stocco does deserve a lot of credit, not just for the way he played in the first half (that 91-yard drive was a thing of beauty), but for playing with poise through the whole game, despite 6 sacks, 9 other knockdowns, and generally running for his life the whole second half, with only one mistake (on a tipped ball).

You're right. We do need a homerun threat at RB. PJ Hill lacks breakaway speed, and he runs too upright, taking a lot of shots--I don't think he can be the one and only back and stay healthy for a season. He's tough, but he's no Ron Dayne (the collegiate player), who had size, toughness, just enough slipperiness to keep from receiving the really hard shots, and enough speed to be an almost breakaway threat. (Again, Dayne as a college player against college defenses). But if we can find the speedster homerun threat to complement Hill, I think we'll be fine. (Sort of like McFadden and Jones, actually.) And before we totally dump on Hill for one game, keep in mind he was frosh offensive player of the year for the entire country!
Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message

Lucius
Posted on Tuesday, January 02, 2007 - 11:14 am:

As a running back, Dayne was head and shoulders above Hill. Hill's success is due to the O-line playing against weak Big Ten competition, and if you say they're not weak, look at your bowl record. Mich and OSU are 1-A and 1. Wisconsin aspires to be 1-B, and they may get there, they may not. I'm still not impressed by their offensive schemes. A defense like Florida's or LSU's would have eaten Stocco alive. Bulemia's being given all sorts of props now, but I think he's in the Alvarez mold nd will achieve on;y intermittent success.

You're probably right, but we're on an upcycle this year, going into next. We should definitely start the season in the top ten next year--probably top five (I'd guess #5). We have 16 returning starters plus both kickers. And say what you want about Hill (and I'm not disputing it), folks will look at his Frosh accolades very positively when voting.

Of course, I still remember when Barry won back-to-back Rose Bowls, and he tried to go for the creme de la creme and lost out on the recruits, which led to the team bottoming out in 03 and 04 because we didn't get enough talent. Barry was definitely better off recruiting the right kind of kid for his program, rather than going with the big boys. Bielema is in the unique position of potentially taking a shot at going for the next level. The next two-to-three recruiting seasons will be very interesting. If we're in the thick of the recruiting wars with the big boys and we win some of the battles, then maybe a corner's been turned into elite status. (More likely we'll remain more of a top 25 program)

The announcers are really ticking me off. I wish they'd actually look at the game before spouting off. On the missed Louisville FG, it was so obviously a bad hold, and they're busy saying it was the WF player who "affected" the kick, without blocking it, or even really getting that close, relatively speaking. It was a bobbled hold that threw the timing. It was obvious in live play, and even more obvious on replay.

And on both reviewed fumbles, I could see why the replay didn't overturn. on WF, it looked like the ball was starting to come loose. Would I have called it a fumble? I dunno. But certainly not enough to overturn, despite the announcers just knowing they're right. And then on the Louisville fumble, if you watch, it was much clearer than WF call. I thought the guy was on his butt before it came out (of course, they started stickin' to bad angle replays to back the idiot announcers...)

I don't know why I'm so grumpy, when I've got Louisville big tonight, and they just made it a two-score game. I guess I'm almost footballed out. But really, is it too much to ask for some friggin' announcers to actually watch the game, closely, before deigning to share their wisdom with us lowlifes.

I've seen college ball do promos and, truthfully, I find Aickman and Buck better than any college team. Griese and Hayden are both pathetic and with three guys, the game gets lost in the chatter. Musberger has never been other than unctious. Announcing, generally, is in its Decadent Age. They have cameras in college booths, too.

I don't think I have a chance in heck of winning this, but I think I've got enough points on the remaining games to get closer if the SEC will just hold up its end of the bargain.

It's probably only subjective, but the pro announcers seem more intrusive, particularly Madden (Michaels is all right) which, like a short fuse on a stick o' dynamite I'm sure will set off a round of explosive hatred-- which is not to say the college announcers aren't, only less so. I'd agree with Aickman and Buck. I miss the days of Simms and Gumbel. Gumbel's still doing the anchor thing, right?

Honestly, I usually watch with the volume off. If you can read the penalty signals -- and based on where they're thrown, it's easy to narrow down the choices to two or three -- what do you need announcers for?

Lucius, so how do you like tonight's game from a betting standpoint? I'm thinking LSU all the way. My line is 8 1/2.

Isn't Gumbel part of the team doing live games on NFL Network? Compared to some of the post-Madden faux-crazy color guys, he is a breath of fresh air.

I realize I'm chiming in kind of late here on this, but I think that Boise game may have just been the craziest college ending I've ever seen, and certainly the craziest bowl ending. Imagine: a team of lightly-regarded kids nobody wanted from a no-name Western school take on the old-line powerhouse, hang in, and outwit the defensive genius with a hook-n-ladder and a Statue of Liberty play on the final down to win it all. Throw in Emilio Estevez as a down-on-his-luck assistant coach forced to assume head duties when the top man is unexpectedly bounced and you have a story Disney would buy in a second.

Still hate the Spuds (especially the clown who proposed to the cheerleader) but now, with a grudging respect.

Madden's a caracature of a human being. When I recently lived in Monterrey, his home, I would see him now and then on the street or in a bar. One day in the summer, I saw him coming out of his favorite bar about one o'clock. He was so trashed, the sunlight almost knocked him down. He stood there wobbling for almost a minute, then finally got himself moving, going off with an unsteady step.

Yeah, me too on the volume thing.

Jeff, I think this thing may go down to the last game. I haven't checked, but it seems to me that there are five or six people still in it.

I'd add "Moose" Johnston to the list of good announcers. Millen wasn't bad (it'll be interesting to see how scarred he's become from Detroit stint if he returns to the booth).

And as much as I loathe the pastiche of a caricature of an announcer that John Madden has become (and I do loathe him now), I still remember very fondly when he first broke into broadcasting back around 1980. He started out calling a fair amount of Packer games for CBS, before he became the #1 team, and he was great back then. Really knew football and talked football. Sure hope that Aikman and Johnston don't degrade like that.

Madden seems to have toned down in the last couple of years. During the 90s on ABC, he really hit his mouth-foaming, language-abusing peak. I think the introduction of the "terducken" was his style-over-substance low point.

That having been said, I still miss Keith Jackson.

Badgers. Don't know that I'm any kind of fan, or even how good I think they are, but I went 5-1 with them this year, including the Ark game. When all was said and done, they were my surest team.

Take it from me. They're terrible. They make suckage look like the finest swill. On;y delusionaries like Minz could see them in good light. They reek. Their mothers smell bad. I swear by my tattoo.

They suck as only a 12-1 team from a BCS conference can suck... What was Miami's record this year? What happened to the coach? :-)

C'mon, stop eating those grapes, Lucius. They're so clearly sour. We were double-digit underdogs to Auburn last year and whupped 'em by 14. We were 'dogs to Arkansas this year and won the game. (We held 'em to 109 yards in the second half, but you won't give our D any props). Say what you want about SEC v BT, but when the BADgers have faced them the past two seasons, they've taken care of bidness...

Oh, and those unranked Nittany Lions took out Tenn, even though they were 'dogs. So it's BT 2, SEC 0 this bowl season. Hopefully Buckeyes will make it 3-0.

Get bent, will ya, Minz! I'm just giving you the needle to make you belch out another spew of Badger stats. It's amusing. If it makes your eagle big, terrific.

Tennessee usually shits the bed in big games. That wasn't a suprise. I only risked nine points. Ark and Wisc were evenly matched. The point I'm making is that the SEC doesn't have an indiana or a northwestern. There are no crips. Going twelve and 1 in that conference is like winning the midget football championship. It's a joke. You would never go 12 and 1 in the SEC.

Ah, but was Jay Cutler an aberration or is the program on a real upswing?

No, it's not on an upswing, I don't think, but every few years Vandy is respectable.
