While in NYC, I was asked if I'd run the bowl pool again. So far there are four participants. Jeff F, Minz, Lynn F, me. If we can get another half dozen participants, it's a go. There are, as you can see, more than thirty games this year. Whoopee.:-)

After their stellar choke against the U, BC may have another dance on the blue turf this season. Well deserved, I might add.

I'm in, but can I just bitch a bit?

Not only did BC lose in basketball, hockey and football this past week, but BC grad Mathias Kiwanuka single-handedly botched the Titans game by "forgetting" to wrap up and tackle Vince Young on what would have been the Titans' last offensive play.

I will be walking outside in a few minutes in case any birds would like to crap on me.

My tally: four that I'm really interested in seeing (NC, Rose, Sugar and Capital One), four others I'd like to see (Gator, Cotton, Outback and Chick Fil-A), and two more I wouldn't mind seeing (Champ Sports, and of course, Texas Bowl, with my Team of Destiny, Rutgers--too bad I don't get NFL network...).

I've got nine, ten if you count the Texas bowl. I want to see the Central Miichigan game so i can watch their freshman qb again, because i think he's the next great MAC qb. Otherwise, my list sorta parallels yours, But you knos, I'll probaby end up watching the first couple, because, hey, no football for a month is too long.

Wow. What kind of geniuses are working on the NC State selection committee? "Let's hire the guy who couldn't coach his defenders to knock down a Hail Mary. Who did he blow that game to? Oh yeah, US!"

I doubt that many folks on the Heights will be crying over this. We need a guy who can take us to the next level and get over the Meineke Car Care hump.

Certainly an upgrade at Alabama in Rich Rodriguez, and an upgrade, albeit not as prestigious, at Miami, in Randy Shannon...though his name gets mentioned for a lot of jobs. It all depends on his pick for OC.

"Okay. Here are the bowls. Thirty some of them. Get your picks in by the evening of the 18th. Pick them according to confidence. 1 point for the bowl you have the least confidence in, and on up."

Oops. Missed that. But I don't quite understand, so at the risk of sounding like a moron, is it you pick the winner of each and then organize as to which you're most certain will fall the way you pick?

You assign a point total to each game. The bowl you have the least confidence in, the one you're most uncertain of as to the outcome, that's your one-point game; the game you have the most confidence in is your thirty-two point game. Second most confidence, 31 points, and so on.

My theory is Florida played down to inferior competition and played up to equal or superior competition. I think they just have an extra gear they can kick it into if they need to.

I actually see it as either a blow-out for Ohio State early or a close win by Florida in the 4th.

Of course, we all know my record in this thing. So I'm about as accurate as that guy you see by the side of the road holding up a cardboard sign saying "Ferrets Are of the Devil" and babbling to himself.

And speaking of no crying in football, did anyone else catch this fine quote from Tom Brady:
"Standing back there, we can't defend ourselves. You're standing there holding the ball. It's not like you have time to shed blocks or anything. You're standing there, like a mannequin, so I don't think they're protecting us too much. There are plenty of calls this year where I thought they should have thrown more flags, [when] I was probably pretty [ticked] off to the ref about [a flag] he didn't throw.
-- New England QB Tom Brady on what he feels is the under-protection of quarterbacks by officials.

Granted, this was in response to Ron Wolf saying “These days, you breathe on a quarterback and it’s fifteen yards.” But Wolf’s right. And I just totally lost all respect for Brady. Still respect the rings he’s won. And the MVPs. But as a football player, well, to borrow a phrase: There’s no crying in football.
Stop whining about the big mean football players who are trying to hurt poor l’il Tommy. This isn’t a contact sport, it’s a collision sport. Grow some cajones, Tom. My two-year-old daughter is tougher than you. (And I mean that quite literally—this past weekend she kept trying to join a 2-on-2 keepaway football game played by boys around 6-9 years old. Much to their chagrin, but she kept trying to get in on the action, especially the tackling. Sounds like Brady wouldn’t have been willing to join that game, with no refs around to protect poor l’il Tommy.)

He comes across almost as big of a whiner as Elway…

Are you kidding me? A guy says, "I don't think they're protecting us too much," and you lose all respect for him, you say poor little Tommy? He's as nad as Elway?

Get some perspective, Minz. He's not whining; he was asked a question and he answered it. I think any QB playing today and in his right mind would have answered the same way.

Oh, c'mon, this is football. And he didn't just say I don't think they're protecting us too much. He whined that there should be even more flags to protect him.

And, by the way, THEY ARE PROTECTING THEM TOO MUCH nowadays. You can't hit a QB high. You can't hit them low. You can't leave your feet to hit them. They've all but eliminated Intentional Grounding. Adn there's The Slide Rule. (If a player takes off to run, in a game of tackle friggin' football, then they should be treated like any other ballcarrier. Period.)

We need refs throwing more flags to protect these prima donnas? We need to hear him whine about how refs aren't doing enough to keep his jersey clean? PUKE! Would Johnny U have said that? YA Tittle? Hell, even Bradshaw wouldn't have whined like that. Or Montana. Or Fran Tarkenton, or...

There's no crying in football, and he's crying for the refs to protect his sorry ass. That's the way I read it, and I'm sticking to that.

Oh, and I will crush you all with my mighty picks. I started making 'em late last week, and got mightily drunk twice before I finished them...Surely that must trump rituals involving poultry entrails.
