Is there anything to be done about it? I mean seriously. You once had a thriving message board, now it's down to a few survivors. I'm going to have to look elsewhere for a web presence or just forget having one if this continues. I don't know if that troubles you, but I'm sick of clearing away dozens of spams every day and I'm not going to do it much longer.

To Whom it May Concern,

I'm not a techie but I have a few thoughts on the spam problem...

Firstly, I've been posting to this board for 3 years now and I've never had to register first. This message is the first time I've used a password. (My name appears in blue). Wouldn't it be a simple matter to require people to register before they post? Then when you look at a list of registered users, Mr. On-line Poker and Miss Texas Instrument are going to stand out a mile away, no?

Secondly, if all these spam messages are coming from a bot that is actually inputting passwords and/or creating profiles as it goes (which appears to be the case as Mr. Poker and Miss Instrument's names appear in blue), why doesn't the number of registered users at the bottom of the page jump dramatically every time the board gets attacked?

The solution to this problem may come down to how you collect and interpret profile information.

I don't think the spambots have defeated those utilities that compel a poster to type three or four hallucinatory symbols correctly prior to posting. That may be a possibility.

I also volunteered and didn't hear back. Maybe they thought my message was spam?

I don't understand what's happened. They used to care about this place, but I guess not anymore.

wow. it's like this place got invaded. i look over and see all the wreckage...

there are some nice message board systems out there, and they seem to be free of junk. i'm surprised someone hasn't snagged one of them. i think the one they use here http://www.the-engine.net/forum/ is pretty sweet, and you get message notifications when people reply and all.

It's still going on. The messages come in at about 10 per minute.

Lately the messages have been coming in at about four a minute. I think the moderators have abandoned this place, and this place is a tomb.

If you've got a website, I can set up a spam free forum for you or tell you how to do it. As Ben Peek says, there are a lot of options which don't require someone to clean them out constantly.
