I thought they'd pull it togther. I can't go for Germany. I worked there for a while and had not a bad time, in fact I had good times, but they were somehow appalling...

I wonder what would have happened if Brazil had played with the energy they showed the last few minutes. Most of the game it was as if they were waiting for one or another of the team to do something...

i didn't see the game. i went out to see the germany argentina game, hoping argentina would win, but didn't get back till late. ended up going to work without sleep and just slept through the next lot. it gets a bit difficult when they play it live at one in the morning. replays aren't the same, though.

anyhow, i'm not much fussed by the country. i'm happy for any of the teams to win. i just reckon germany's been playing well, plus the home ground advantage...

So...

Argentina was a stronger team than Germany. Brazil was favored over France. I didn't say I thought they were necessarily going to win. I just dislike the frigging Germans. I like certain Germans, but as a nation, with their swaztika waving soccer fans, I don't like to see them win anything.

Lucius,

I did not see that. Good on 'im. Wonder where Dirk's going to be playing next year.:-)

All right, the first time it was for shits and grins, this time it's for kicks and giggles:

Germany-Italy 2-1 (OT)
Portugal-France 1-1 (France, penalty kicks)

Honestly, I wouldn't count Italy out. They're exactly where they want to be. Nor would I bet against Portugal, as great as France looked under Zidane's leadership and magic (he ought to be wearing a uniform with stars and moons all over it).

Lucius - Fair enough. Unfortunately, in Italy the situation isn't much better, though the Italians are a bit quieter about their fascism. Still, when I go to the markets in Italy I am amazed at how many people are selling fascism memorablia. There is even an Italian wine that has Mussolini on its label - a current wine.

Strangely enough, I think as a nation, Germany is a bit more liberal....

Anyhow, right now I wouldn't mind seeing France take the cup. I like that their team is culturally mixed.

But...but...but...Lucius, in my six plus years of living in Germany I never saw a single swatstika waving skinhead -- or any skinhead for that matter. I'm not saying they're not there, but they're a faction like, say, the KKK or white supremicists here in America, which don't even begin to represent the mainstream. The Deutschies are really not that bad. They may still be a bit rigid and regimental, but they're slowly coming 'round. Not to oversimplify, but the clowns up in Berlin waving their idiotic banners are attention seekers.

Germany 2.75
France 3.25
Italy 4.5
Portugal 7.5

Again, I wouldn't touch any of this with lottery money. Except perhaps to put a cold and disposable grand on Portugal.

Actually, after thinking it over, Portugal might have a better chance against Italy than France if they were to play that attacking style. What impressed me today was the way Italy took the ball away cleanly from Germany, without tackling them. Every time Ballack made a run, it seemed they walked up and took it away.

I thought the game yesterday was great, especially the latter portions. Have fun at work.

No argument. I just wouldn't mind seeing some fireworks in one of these.

I'm rooting for an Italy-France final so we can pay back the Gauls for Euro 2000.

Be careful what you wish for, Dave.

I see this thing has some pace to it. I'm rooting for Portugal, too, though I'll be happy either way with a good match.

France almost had a break. I think the French d is making the Ports tentative.

I dunno. But it's on again tonight at nine. You can see the worst singer ever to appear on Rockstar, one Chris from Atlanta, who performed an excrutiating version of Roxanne.
