Brazil's a little lucky, but up 2-0, it's in the bag. I'm beginning to think they won't win, that due to the tendency to play to their opponent's level, they might let a game slip.

Brazil is waxing Ghana, but their defense looked mighty porous in the first half. If Ghana's players were not such past masters at the "directly at the keepers belly" shot, they might have notched a couple.

Brazil is so talented, they can do what they want. They tend to relax. Against lesser teams like Ghana and Italy, they can get by, but one wonders about Spain....

I hope this is in jest. :-) I do not love Deutschland the nation, but Deutschland the country. As I've alluded to, I loved living there for purely selfish reasons. My thinking for the above is that the Ger-Arg match stays close until late, then Germany grabs an extra, with the crowd cheering them on.

I agree, none of this will work out that neatly. Just playing.

Trier is perhaps my favorite city on earth -- being a key setting in both my first novel and the one I'm working on now. And no Karl Marx jokes, mein freund.

Luxembourg? You should be rooting for the Ukrainians then, as they fill those cabarets with their ladies. I've a place in my heart for Luxembourg, too. Anyplace where the nightlife doesn't begin till after midnight and doesn't end till sometime in the morning is all right with me...

I thought you were kidding at first. They're everywhere over there, ties to the thing. Good and bad, though. Once, when Julie and I hiked up to a Falkenburg castle ruin, we met an elderly Belgian lady who had only the best of stories about the American GIs she had housed in her basement...

The Eifel is cool.

That was a __Belgian__lady, right. Nicht Duetsch.

The Salem plant was fun. My first night in town, I said goodbye to two friends who driven up from Malaga with me and were going on to Sweden. We'd smuggled dope for some months together. We had a glass of wine in a tavern. One was a black guy, the other was named Shapiro, very Semitic looking. The next day I secured my job and the day after I started work. Two guys came up to me in the lunchroom and asked how come I had arrived in town with a Jew and a schwartze.

Small town, huh?

The turkish thing is different. I took a train ride from Munich to Istambul around Xmastime back in the 70s with a bunch of turkish workers who were heading home for the holidays and they were telling jokes and stories reviling the Germans. They never tried to or wanted to integrate into German society. The jews, on the other hand...that was like Rwanda.

Will have to put Head On in our queue.

Yeah, I remember hearing that the Turks like to gather in these "reserve" pavilions in parks and start a fire in the grill and get rowdy. When the polizei come and tell them to cool it, to put out the fire, or to leave, they refuse, saying they're being discriminated against. And the police have no choice but to leave them to it.

The Turks can be kind of nasty. Once two younger men stepped out in front of our moving car giving us the thumbs down sign. Something was going on...I think it was after two Turks were arrested for planning to bomb the Heidelberg PX. Anyway, they recognized our tag as being US.

Anyway, time for some football!

I hate to root against England, but I sure do like Portugal and their game. England is so boring for all that star power.

Brazil-France. I want Brazil to win 'cause I think they're the best team and will give the Ger-It winner the best game. But. I can see myself rooting for France if it stays close.

So I guess what I'm saying is, I don't fucking know what I want!

I'll say this: I'm more excited about today's matches. I expect both to be tight.

Well, that was brilliant of Rooney!

This is going to go to penalty kicks again -- once again, I hate that resolution.

England underacheived the whole tournament and are the first real disappointment. It was only a matter of time for them.

Anyway, only thing to do now is gear up for the next one.

Portugal-Brazil (if Brazil makes it through) is going to rock. Decko being back...

Watch, since I've said that, Brazil will probably lose Ronaldo or somebody...

France won't be a pushover.

They didn't underachieve as much as the coach didn't put them in a situation to maximize their talent. I'm with Wynalda on that.

Yeah, I feel like that was the worst coaching job, followed by the USA, in the tournament.
