That's an interesting strategy, Lucius. I felt like I couldn't call a lot of those early games with much confidence because I wasn't familiar enough with the teams. SoMiss/AKS was an exception. Did you study up on the early-game teams?

I did a little bit of studying, but actually quite a few fell within my natural area of interest. Some of the later games I felt were more difficult calls, even though they seemed obvious. And the last two years I went 12 and 2 in the first seven games. So...

I thought I would put confidence in the early games last year, but then the North Texas Mean Green with their 5-6 record pulled an upset and I dug myself a trench right off the bat. I'm counting on a late surge.

Just unloaded a house full of company, and in the prep and party hadn't had time to come on and admit that Navy didn't exactly suck the blood turnip. At least Lynn and I were able to claw our way out of the basement. Now I have to go over to ESPN and see if, hopefully, Kansas won. Hey, a laundry and a bar combined? What a great concept. Although most ventures would be improved by adding a bar. Like grocery stories with rolling bars going up and down the aisles. A free martini with every box of cereal. Shots of Jack with the purchase of Pop-tarts.

A laundry, a bar, and a rock and roll club. It's very cool. I saw the Perfect People of the Universe there a couple of years back, the great Polish band, also, art rockers, the Sun City Girls. Last time I saw the Girls was at a festival, in the Bumbershoot Main Stage auditorium. They stopped mid-song and the singer read aloud from Mein Kampf and the guitarist drove golf balls over the heads of the audience...But enough about them. Back to football, where--temporarily, anyway--I rule. :-) Of course Darren may never lose.

This is all weird this year. Last year everyone had a coupe of losses, at least, by now and this year there's two undfeated (sorry, Jeff) and at least three with only one loss. I thought going in that there would be fewer upsets in the early bowls if only for the fact there were so many last year and coaches could use that as a cautionary exemplar. But there hasn't been a single game that could be considered a real upset. I wish I'd put more confifence in Kan myself.

I think Akron-Memphis is a coin flip. I picked Akron as well--it's a matter of what you like, a team with one great player or a team with balance. I picked Akron because it's their first bowl game ever and I think they'll be happier to be there than Memphis and because the city produced some of the greatest punk rock ever. If they keep D'angelo Williams below 150 yds, I think they'll win.

I picked Memphis with very low confidence because I honestly had no idea. Clemson, however, was one of my highest picks of all. Colorado is a demoralized team. They've been on a slump for a while, and I don't see them pulling up before they hit the ground.

That'll teach them to let go of Brian Calhoun!

I'm with Forrest on Akron-Memphis. Ditto there. Not much confidence on that one for me.

RE: Clemson/Colorado. Colorado lost its head coach and got annihiliated 70-3 at season's end. If Tommy Bowden can't coach a win over a Colorado team in this much turmoil, he should be handed a pink slip right there on the sidelines and everyone should point at him and laugh. Key game for me. Go Clemson.

RE: Arizona State/Rutgers....a low confidence game for me. I took the Devils over the Ivy Leaguers. Devils are muy schizo, but it's virtually a home game for them, so I probably should've put more points on that one. Oh well. Go Devils.

Having seen Memphis play, I hardly expect it to be a romp over Akron. The thing about Memphis is they are streaky and they get a lot of what I'd call bad luck but others might call non-prescient coaching. I figure Akron, like Lucius said, is excited to be there, and a solid team.

Yeah, Akron didn't get much TV time, but they were impressive against NIU...

I've based my picks on hanging with the good teams and conference strength.....I think, even this year, the MAC is stronger than Conf USA. Of course that conference strength thing can bite you in the ass if a team don't want to be there, but I don't think that's a factor here.

Question: can ESPN suck USC's jock any harder than they are right now?

I thought running five minutes of Reggie Bush/Gale Sayers comparisons every day, every hour on the hour, was a bit much, but this whole thing where they debate day by day and count down whether this year's USC team could beat the "top 11 teams in the history of college football." Is there any worse TV than that? Can USC beat the 1955 Oklahoma Sooners? Can USC beat the 1988 Fighting Irish? Can USC beat the 1210 Genghis Khan army?

Who the hell cares??

I expected overhype, but it's so cartoony that I can barely watch Sportscenter anymore. The tradeoff is, I gotta admit that I love that the media pressure on Texas is all but nonexistent because everyone is already expecting USC to destroy Texas in humiliating fashion. So I like it from that standpoint because Texas comes in a deep dog with balance in all three phases and nothing to lose....but man, January 4th cannot come soon enough...:-)

I stopped watching Sportscenter years ago. Didn't work for Sportscenter. I just shut it off and told myself that was enough to hold me over for another year.

As for the big win by the NV Wolf Pack, it was one heckuva game to watch. Well worth staying up. O'Leary really has those kids playin' down in Central FL. Keep your eyes on them.

John P, even though I picked USC, I hope you're right. I just can't see TX defense stopping USC, but I sure hope I'm wrong. I picked 34-27 as a score, just off the cuff after Lucius reminded me, but afterwards, I had to say to myself, that's probably not enough. I don't think USC's d is all that, but their offense is very dangerous, and unless Vince becomes the actual second coming, it could be tough for TX. Hope I'm wrong.

I originally picked Rutgers, and was going to make it my two-point game (which went to USC instead--Hook 'em Horns!), but then saw that it was indeed a friggin' home game for ASU and backed off the pick.

I'm happy with where I'm sittin; still haven't hit any of my serious pointers yet. (Y'all be shocked to learn I'm pickin' the Big Ten pretty heavy)

Hope the holidays are going well for everyone.

Oh, and HOOK 'EM HORNS!

Thanks, Minz. Happy Holidays over there. Good to hear from you. Yeah, I figure you're just lurking in the weeds and waiting to make your move with big points on the back end.

Just want to reiterate that my beef is with ESPN, and not with USC. They are a dynamite offense and I do think Reggie deserved the Heisman hands-down. But the ESPN hype for them is just beyond over-the-top....

Lucius already knows that I loaded the house on that game, figuring that everyone would bet USC. My hope is that I can be within 28 points of the crown on the morning of January 4th, and then we'll just see what happens that night.....

I wouldn't be able to look at myself in the mirror if I didn't back the Horns all the way in the biggest game of all. :-) More fun that way, anyway. Well, we got a lot of football between now and then, but my Sportscenter time may be sliced to a minimum until after January 4th....:-)

I'll have Memphis/Akron on TV over here in about a 1/2 hour!

I also stopped watching Sportscenter a while back when they took to doing Kenny Mayne schtick and Budweirser hot seats and Fact or Fiction and etc.

I'm happy with where you're sitting too, MInz... :-)

I would have watched NV-UCF but I was busy debauching.

John, the media pressure may be all on USC, but they're used to it. I doubt it'll be a factor.

If you would, take another peek at that math. I believe I had 66 points prior to today's game, and then you add 6 points, and I should have 72.

Anyway. Much appreciated!

I kind of think of this year's ASU squad as underachievers in the way California underacheived, and that they'll come together after the time off to salvage what they can of a somewhat disappointing season.

I'm sure Rutgers has other plans...

That was my chicken, John. The one I sacrificed over a pentagram to summon demons which will now dance in the pants of ASU's offense, distracting them from actually moving the ball. When the fiends asked for more than a chicken, I offered them bobby Bowden and they fell for it. There'll be a new boss in hell come next season, though they did mention that Paterno's contract has to run out some time . . .

I actually live in Jersey, and I couldn't get it up to bet on Rutgers. Is Minz taking Rutgers? Any other Jerseyites on here? The chicken assures me, it's going to be Clemson and Arizona tonight. He's ready to bet his beak on it. Lucius can't win because he had the temerity to dis Kong in a review. He forgot he was beholden to like it cause somebody else did. For this reason, he will lose.

Clemson's offense is truly inept. Only 6-3 lead with about 2-1/2 minutes to go in the 1st half. They should be mopping the field with Colorado. Colorado's punting game is keeping them in the thick of it. Monster kicks...

Oh, and lookee here, Clemson has just thrown an interception to Colorado. Dammit, Bowden, your guys are killing me....

Hey, the good news is ESPN is taking a break from being the USC Network, and at halftime, they're giving a little TV time to Texas...the title of the piece is "How to Stop Vince Young"....ESPN's jaws are gonna be sore on January 4th from sucking so much Trojan....actually, that last comment was unnecessarily disturbing so just pretend I didn't type it...:-)

Looks like everyone feasted on that one. Except for Lynn, darn it. Sorry bout that, Lynn.

My next three bowl games are very low points. I've got the Devils, the BlueTurfers, and the Wolverines, but I've got a grand total of 12 points at stake in all three combined.

The Alamo Bowl (Michigan/Nebraska) is being played about 7 minutes from my house, and it's usually a good shootout and fun to watch on TV. I'm thinking that game may go down to the wire...

It's kind of hard to get excited for a game when you a) don't really care about either team, b) don't hate either one, and c) only have one point riding on it.

Oh, by the way, Wisconsin just got verbals from Xavier Harris out of FL (WR) and Lance Kendricks, WR out of Milwaukee. Henry Mason is a recruiting machine.
