Slim Pickings this week, but a few good games. I'll be away for the holidays most of next week, but I'll post on occasion.

Rumor has it that the Capital One bowl is going to give the BADgers an invite . . . which means they will be quickly slain by red hot Auburn.

VA/Miami is worth watching. So is UNC/VA tech. And FSU/FL. Someone want to throw some footballs up from Dixie? Our pigskins are getting cold up here.

Not by Pitt. I'm afraid Palko is going to be seeing too much of that WVa sky.

Well, I'll keep the good thought. Probably won't get to see much of it, cause I'll be with non-football people...There are such, sad to say.

Actually, I think it's not beyond the pale that Pitt can win that game. I mean West Va isn't all that. But I'd prefer to see WVU horsewhipped by LSU than the Bulls...

Yeah, Forrest, avoid the uncomfortable at all costs....

And speaking of Auburn ( :-) ) maybe you could lose to Hawaii and avoid same?

We really got to have a play off

Yeah, Auburn will slaughter UW . . . again.

I'm talking about the BADgers having to face a clearly superior Auburn team. No contest . . .

No happy holidays for BADger fans.

Caught some of the pitt game. They're playing them tough. One weird thing. What was the deal with Wanny turning down a penalty at his own 45 that would have given him third and nine, a chance to keep a drive alive, and instead taking the result which made it fourth and three across midfield and punting? It seemed he was giving up an opportunity. As it was the punt went into the EZ; might have had a better chance of punting WVU deep from his side of midfield, even if they didn't make the first down.

Gotta leave now with the game unresolved.

I gained control of the remote this afternoon and watched Miami and Fla games -- very satisfying to see Bowden humbled and the Canes get by Va. I'm afraid the Gators will get belted by Iowa, howsomever. Too bad about da Bulls. Gotta run. Going out on the town.

Not a bad week for the BADgers. Finished season 9-3 and are eyeing a Jan 2nd bowl (a heckuva lot better than pretty much all the "experts" predicted). The men's cross country team took the national title. Both Men's and Women's Hockey now ranked #1 in the country. Men's & Women's Hoops teams are undefeated (though men's team has Wake Forest on Tues night, so the bullets will finally be real). All in all, a very nice week to be a BADger.

new rumors about Bret Bielema's targeted assistant coaches. Apparently he's cleaning house in a big way. White made his departure official yesterday, and Palermo said he won't be back a couple of weeks ago. Chryst and Hueber are staying (yay! - oh, OC and Offensive Line's coaches, respectively). Oh, and WR coach Henry Mason is sticking around, too (also yay!):

Sources have indicated that Bielema's targets include:

Bob Elliott, Kansas State's defensive coordinator and secondary coach; Joe Bob Clements, Kansas State's defensive ends coach; G.A. Mangus, in his fourth season as head coach at Division III Delaware Valley College; Jeff Jamrog, in his second season as head coach at Division II Minnesota State Mankato; William Inge, in his first season as Colorado's defensive line coach; and Don Patterson, head coach at Division I-AA Western Illinois.

Time for some Canadian content and a question...

The 93rd Grey Cup game aka the Canadian football league's championship game was on Sunday: Edmonton 38, Montreal 35 in OT. It was the first overtime game in 44 years and only the second overall. Fairly slow first half [10-1 for Edmonton] and an energetic, sleazy performance by the Black-Eyed Peas at halftime. Then it got weird...a record 96 yard kickoff return, an illegal double pass, some ridiculously improbable catches, a clutch third down conversion [Canadians can't afford a fourth down for some reason] and the OT.

To everyone's amazement, Canadian OT works like this: Team 1 lines up on the opposition's 35 yard line with a first down and tries to score. The opposition then takes a turn. Interceptions run back for a TD immediately win the game. If it's still tied after each team takes a turn, they line up at the other end of the field and Team 2 goes first. In Sunday's game, Montreal and Edmonton each scored TDs, Edmonton bagged a 36 yard field goal and then Montreal got sacked for 21 yards and tried a quick kick. Bizarre, vastly entertaining game.

How do they deal with OT in the big leagues?

They play a 15 minute OT....first team to score within that time wins. If no one scores, it's a tie.

Thanks Lucius. That would be for regular season, I'm thinking. Doesn't seem quite cricket for the team who doesn't get first possession.

How about a playoff game or, better yet, the Superbowl?

They'd just play another 15 minute period, and another and so on...But that's not likely to happen.

Hmm. Depends on if he coaches them like he did the last two years or the previous six before that. If the last two years are any indicator, he won't be much help. IF he can return to pre-2004 form, though . . .

True.

In other recruiting-type news, JUCO hotshot QB Bret Schaeffer is coming to visit UW this week. Rumors are in circulation that he's dropped the Gators from consideration and is trying to decide between us and NC State. Hopefully Bielema can convince him to come here . . . and walk all over Stocco.

Weird, I've never seen Shaver's name on any Fla website. But it's a good move on his part. They've got Leak, freshman blue-chipper Josh Portis, and have already gotten a commitment from another blue-chipper this year. So chances are he wouldn't have gotten much PT.

That was, apparently, why he originally left TN. He didn't think he'd get any playing time, so he went JUCO. At least that's the story. I'd love to see us take him in, put him on the scout team for a year, and let him go crazy for two years after that. Or, if he could learn the system, whatever it turns out to be, he could trump Stocco and we'd have an absolutely killer offense.

Now, if only we can find a couple of secret weapons on defense.

Yeah, the nation holds its breath. :-)

Miami landed PJ Harver (at least, I think that's his name) a four star receiver; they appear to be loading up on receivers and O linemen, including a couple of JUCO monsters.
