Trujillo's coming out as a short novel from NS. The other three stories will form the core of yet another collection.

Because of the various books out or coming out with overlapping stories!

There are no overlapping stories.

There was the limited of Trujillo which turns into three books over here.

Those who reviewed the UK edition will not be happy to see the book divided into three parts over here, that's all I'm saying.

Why?

As a limited it was good value, but it would have been too expensive over here to do as one book.

Why should the UK reviewers give a shit?

US reviewers reviewed the UK edition too, didn't they? They're the ones who it might confuse. You don't get it. Reviewers don't like to see multiple editions of the same book. It's confusing.

US reviews did not review the book, except for a handful of scifi reveiwers. None of the forecasts and none of the major papers, because I asked Pete not to submit galleys. This to enable sales, In the past, I've published alternate versions of books. The British Jaguar Hunter has a different TOC, diffenent stories, than the domestic version, for instance.

I think reviewers, especially in the sci-fi community, are too subservient to Year's Best Lists, which leads to their frustration with overlapping collections. Everyone (including me) wants to compartmentalize favorite books, movies, etc. by year. Hell, Trujillo the PS version was my favorite book last year, what do I do about Eternity and the independently-published Trujillo novel this year? Treat them like they don't exist in '05? At a guess, when it comes to year-end recommendations, that's probably how publications like Locus will treat them, since the PS Trujillo already got its due in Locus last year.

Ten Locus recs and a buck would get me a cup of coffee. Breaking the collection into three sections and selling it made my year.

Anyway, glad you liked Trujillo...

Lucius, I've got to ask:

What else can you share about the third section that'll contain 'The Same Old Story', 'The Park Sweeper' and 'Senor Volto'? Great stories all...

Hey Lucius - We haven't discussed what Locus will do about recommendations for the three books that were originally published as Trujillo. As you rightly observe, though, it's not really important at all. The original book was fantastic, the split up trio of books will be equally fantastic. Everything else is just bean counting. - Jonathan

At first I thought that this was a new collection. I'll probably buy it anyway:-)

Besides confusing reviewers I wonder how many readers will buy it without realizing that it's already been printed elsewhere. The description of the book at Amazon doesn't indicate that this is the case. Ditto for the publisher's description.

I won't begrudge Lucius the financial opportunity to sell and sell again but readers may not appreciate it.

As far as the UK and US publications go it really doesn't matter as Amazon and other online booksellers are carrying both US and UK books. So when someone is digging around for Shepard material they'll run into the various titles and confusion ensues...

Jonathan, been off-line. Actually as mentioned, the Jaguar Hunter and Ends of the Earth were a lot more confusing, as regards their TOC. Since Trujillo was a limited and unriewed basically, I assume most readers weren't even aware of it;; so I think the problem will be minimal.
