Cool Lucius, hope there's some gems in there. Just got in the Bitches Brew Collector's Edition in the mail, they spared no expense on that one, Mati Klarwein art all over it, and all kinds of posters, photos, replicas and such. BB sounds excellent too.

Yep. Bitches Brew is not my fave Miles--I like his later stuff more; but it got a great few notes. :-)

I'm really digging the new Swans record and am thinking about getting into Michael Gira's solo stuff. Not quite sure where to begin. Any recommendations?.

Haven't heard anything by Swans since Love of Life. Michael Gira's nihilistic self-hatred schtick got to be a bit much. Did you ever hear World of Skin? You might like Ten Songs from Another World if you like his recent stuff. It was acoustic project back when Swans was still a going concern.

You might be interested in the new Neil Young. I remember you saying you liked Dead Man and this new one (Le Noise) is kind of in that vein. Just Neil plus distorted/treated guitars (no drums/ no bass/ etc.) with one acoustic track.

I followed your suggestion and tried Calexico's Feast of Wire. I had been vaguely familiar with them before, but never really listened to a full album (I think it was my anti-Pitchfork feeling). Anyway, I enjoy this stuff.

I also came across a Portuguese stoner metal band, Black Bombain. They do instrumental stuff that reminds me of the Baroness EPs. Maybe that's because they also decorated their cover with illustrated bearded twins.

Hey Lucius,

Are you still in Honduras?

Hope you had/are having a great holiday. Just got back from 4 days in Istanbul where I saw a pretty good band called Baba Zula. The line up features two drummers (trad African and electronic), a female singer, a Baglama (lute) player who uses a bunch of effects and two belly dancers. Described on their site as "Oriental Dub: A magic mixture of reggae, belly dance and oriental music in electronic treatments of traditional Turkish music instruments." Have been looking for a live you tube clip of decent quality but could only find this live-in-the-studio clip...

Bought a pile of Turkish music that I will get to in the next few days.

Happy New Year!

Richard

Hey, Rich...

Yeah, still in Honduras.

Thanks for the tip. I love Istambul's music scene.

HNY to you as well...

Back to Calexico, after enjoying Feast of Wire, I got Hot Rail. I like that too. I'm not sure if I should try Garden Ruin, since that's supposed to be more standard indie rock sounding.
