Amazon is starting up a program called Amazon shorts, which will feature short unpublished works or unpublished excerpts bt varoius writers, available on line for 50cents or something like. I'm gonna be part of it. My offering is an excerpt from my novel, as yet unfinished, called The 'Velt, which deals with cocaine addiction, real estate swindles, and the spirits of the dead in a highcrime neighboor hood in 1980s New York City, It's a very dark, naturalistic ghost story. About 8000 words.

I didn't mean the excerpt is a ghost story; the novel is. There's only a brief appearance by a ghost in the excerpt.

Should be up on June27.

Lucius Shepard, Feb. 26, 2004:

"The Velt still lives. It makes Floater look like an episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show."

I've been looking forward to this one! Lucius, any plans to finish this piece?

Speaking of the ol' CBS Saturday night lineup of yore, I was always partial to The Bob Newhart Show. And Tim Conway and Harvey Corman on The Carol Burnett Show cracked me up every time.

OK, the Velt is so removed form this subject. In the first couple of chapters, a transexual gets her throat cut, Drano poured in her fish tank, etc; our cocaine-addicted hero gets a nosebleed while fucking and paints his girlfriend's chest with about a half-pint, and begins having hallucination about his dead teenage son...Doesn't make a great sitcom.

Liked Newhart, hated Burnett.

Hey Lucius, the first bit about the transexual sounds familiar. Were manuscript pages from The Velt matted into the traycases of The Last Time?

You guys ever play "Hello, Bob," the drinking game whose trigger is a Bob Newhart character uttering the eponymous line? It was a riot. Lucius, maybe you can have some sort of mayhem-based drinking game based on your HBO show?

Am I the only guy in America who looked forward to "Arnie" with Herschel Bernardi on Sat. night?

Jeez, man, I was only 11 when Bob Newhart premiered! We usually watched it at my grandparents' house, after an invigorating episode of "The Lawrence Welk Show."

I'm not even kidding...Hey, we weren't all running around Detroit with Wayne Kramer and Iggy Pop in 1975!

This from AMAZON

Hello,

As you know, this week was the expected launch for the eagerly anticipated debut of Amazon Shorts. And thanks to all of you, we have many authors from numerous genres participating in what we are certain will be an extremely successful program. Our hope was to launch Shorts later tonight; however, we are still trying to perfect the customer experience process and want to ensure we roll out with a flawless product. With that being said, we are reconvening to establish a new target date which I will hope will be at the end of the month. I will be certain to let you know the new launch date when I receive that information. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at ________. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you but I can ensure you the delay will be for the best. Thank you.

I love that rarified language, 'Marketese'. Lotsa superlatives...eagerly anticipated, extremely successful, flawless product, ad nauseum. I hope the copy writer[s] above reads 'The 'Veld', that oughta give 'em something with a little more balls to incorporate into their Corporate-Speak.

Looking forward to it, whenever they manage to perfect the experience!

Nothing to do with Amazon. I hadn't updated my credit card info for a long time as if I've gotta buy from Bezos, I'll surf over to the Canadian Amazon site. It tends to be cheaper in terms of shipping, no exchange rate [other than the hidden one], etc. The 'Veld isn't available on Amazon.ca and likely isn't in the U.K. or anywhere but the States. Also, you'd think it wouldn't be dead stinking last in terms of publication date, and you might miss a sale or two as a result. Otherwise, the purchase was reasonably effortless and I appreciate being able to either download it as a pdf or have it e-mailed, or both. Don't mind having Amazon permanently store me a copy in a so-called digital locker. I once lost the e-version of Beast of the Heartland [and an e-Waldrop] which was annoying; no backup by me [dumb] and none then by Amazon.

Haven't had a chance to get into it, the house got invaded by scoundrels and other friends. Soon, though.

Just finished 'The 'Velt'. Brutal vignette replete with signature Shepardian imagery, a tough, excellent read. I agree with Rich, the physical and emotional violence seemed in context. Lucius, can we look forward to the finished piece after 'Christmas in Honduras' and 'Softspoken' sometime late next year?

Incidentally, The 'Velt' still isn't showing up on the main F&SF page of Amazon Shorts...Frost, Anderson and Williams are currently displayed but no clear route to 'The 'Velt'. If you hadn't posted the URL above or told me to look at the last entry in your book listings, I would've been hooped.

I wanted to further update you on the current launch timeline for Amazon Shorts. As many of you know, the storefront is built, products merchandised and work cataloged and ready to go. Everything looks great. We are still in the process of perfecting an element of the customer experience and estimate that this will take two weeks to complete. Because this is such an important strategic program for Amazon we are taking great care to build a tremendous new store and excellent customer experience. Iím sure you will share my enthusiasm that it is worth the wait. In the meantime, we have been completing further testing of the new products and aggressively planning online and offline promotional elements. Our current projection is to launch this new ďstoreĒ on Amazon.com the week of August 15th.

Iím thrilled that you have contributed great work to this program and excited to see the reaction from the media and customers once this launches. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at mahenry@amazon.com or 206-266-0822. Thank you for your continued support of this new program.

Well, I just had a look and 'The 'Velt' is currently outselling Danielle Steele's lastest drivel at Amazon Shorts. There is, at least a small modicum, of justice in the universe.

A modest proposal: Lucius, how about listing 'Chango' on Amazon Shorts? I've got a copy; betcha there's a few out there that wouldn't mind checking it out.
