SInce this is the last piece of news I'll be posting on this board until Sept or thereabouts, and since I always forget to note foreign sales, story sales, and usually novel sales, I might as well as well put out something pretty big. Walter Hill and his partner John Allen Simon are set to option A HANDBOOK OF AMERICAN PRAYER with the intention of developing it as a series for HBO. The idea is something along the lines of Six Feet Under. Each episode will center on a prayer that Wardlin writes for a particular person and will follow that persons life, as well as furthering the overarching plot ithat involves Wardlin and Therese. Terms have been agreed upon, but contracts have not yer been signed. Since Hill has been a showrunnner at HBO, most recently Deadwood, there's some hope that it'll actually happen. But as with all Hwood projects, it could go poof. Anyway, badeeaa, badeeaa, badeeaa, that's all folks!

Hey, before you know it, Tom Cruise will be starring in movies based on Lucius's works, in films directed by Stephen Speilberg or David Fincher.

How was that? Did I get Lucius's worst nightmare mostly right?

Thanks, guys....

Hey, JJA, that's not a nightmare, that's a happymare.

Watch me sing steven's praises! No, you learn to let go -- let them do with it as they will.

Alex, this all came down Friday afternoon, so I don't know a lot. But I definitely won't be writing the first few episodes. At some point I'd like to write an episode if it flies, but I don't yearn for that kind of work. I've done it before and I can do it, but writing is the one area of my life over which I have autonomy and I don't enjoy the creative process Hollywood style. Which is why I'm not there earning the big bucks. I'm doing what makes me happy and I;ve learned that Hollywood can make you very unhappy.

Walter Hill!! The Walter Hill? I assume so. Well, well done. I hope it gets made. I'm sure it will. Better HBO than well anybody else. But then coming to think of it, can you imagine any other network - ABC, NBC etc optioning American Prayer?

This is really so strange. I was going to put up a post the other day on the movie thread asking Lucius what he thought of Walter Hill's CrossRoads (because of its blues theme), but didn't bother. I swear. Now if only I had, that would have freaked Lucius out a bit.

Frigging fantastic! This couldn't happen to anyone more deserving, in my opinion. You are one of those rare genre writers who writes with incredible depth and passion. I loved the book and wish you zillions of bucks.

Since I know you're a mega-Leo, and Saturn moves into Leo this summer, I predict that it's very likely the deal will go through. In any case, good luck!

Dave, let;s not get ahead of outselves. This is going to be in development for a long time...and that's if it goes,

What brought me back from Limbo was JJA's post. I like this game.

Viggo Mortensen as Wardlin. Go back before LOTR to films like the Indian Runner and American Yakuza, etc. Viggo makes an excellent Wardlin. And if he's not available, hey, I always like Edward Norton. Different Wardlin, but equally as interesting. Treat: Bruce Campbell. Therese: There aren't any redheads that are right, but Laura Linney has the right mix of toughness and softness. Sue Billick: Kyra Sedgewick.

Thanks for the congrats, Minz and Bronwyn

Yah, I always thought "Big Truck" was a bit one-dee... Weird, 'cos I remember watching Mormeck on Eurosport bills from boxing hotbeds like Vienna and San Marino, about five years ago, and saying "Ah, he's brave, but he's found his level..." Glad he's proved me wrong.

All the best,

I don't know if Braithewaite was an much one dee as Mormeck was multi dee. Where'd that jab come from? That was amazing. I picked Mormeck, but after seeing that fight, I think Braithewaite can come back and do some things to make it more competitive. '

The weird thing, the sad thing, it was a flashback to the old heavyweight era. Two guys who were pretty athletic and with good skills, in shape, going after it. A far cry from the plodding, unskilled giant we see today.

You're right man, you're right. And they both weighed in at about "Joe Louis Size", didn't they? Let's call Cruiser "Heavyweight" from now on, and rename the other division "Fat Fuck Weight".

Or possibly "Overweight".

Hmm. Maybe not.

Posted on Monday, April 04, 2005 - 06:12 am:

Let's go with Fat Fuck Weight.

I hope Mormeck and Braithwaite stay at cruiser and try and make something out of it, because maybe people are finally getting sick of seeing Godzilla lumbering after Ghidra. It might have a future. And how refreshing was it that neither guy gained one tenth of his body weight between the weigh in and the fight. Two guys fighting at their natural weights. Go figure, huh?

And any guy who comes to the ring to the tune of the Replacements' "I'll Be You" is worth rooting for.

Yeah, it was a good bout, all right. For once, two guys fought valiantly and well and the more skilled contestant won, as opposed to one or both being fat, out of shape, unskilled, lazy, etc. Mormeck was impressive, showing the ability to bull in with his strength and bang on the inside or, when the fight was in the bag, work from the outside behind a -- yes -- surprisingly stiff and active jab.

It would be great if the cruisers really turn into something other than a weigh station between high carb meals for wannabe heavies. But my thought watching the fight was "I'll bet Mormeck could beat a bunch of the current fringe heavy contenders right now." Anyone else think this?

I fear that he is going to be pushed by Don King to spice up the heavyweight mix. A french heavyweight champ? What's this world coming to??? :-)

Is that different from a Ukranian hvt. champ? A PR champ? And, coming soon, a polish champ? Or for that matter, a light heavywght champ, since Tarver was the man who beat the man? And a blown-up middle champ in Byrd? Seems to me Mormeck fits right in.

Wow. Is that a sad statement or what?

Lucius, I accord you all the respect due to a don of literature. But, as good as your appellation may be, I have to believe that my monikers can toe the line with yours.

I did start a thread on the CBZ. A sparse, but occasionally inspired, response.

Personally, I like "Fleurs du Mal" and the Celine reference. It would be funny if he turned out to be well-read. We could get a Leaping Lanny Poffo thing going; he could recite passages from existentialist literature and explain how they can be interpreted to mean the demolition of his opponent. Now, THAT would be worth PPV money.

Your reliance on the eck rhyme grows tedious, but...

Jean Marc "Lecter" Mormeck
Jean-Mark "Les Pecs" Mormeck
Jean-Mark "the Specktre" Mormeck

and then there's

Jean-Marc "Jean d'Arc" Mormeck

Hmmm, I think that internal rhyme gives a nickname some extra zing (cf Stan "The Man" Musial, Dean "The Dream" Meminger).

Yeah, I like the "Jean D'Arc" thing...See? You like the internal rhyme, too.

How about Jean-Marc "the Shark" Mormeck
Jean-Marc "the Lark" Mormeck
Jean-Marc "the Bulwark" Mormeck

No, if we're going that way..."Jean d'Arc" is the best...:-)

Actually if you want to emulate "The Name Game," it would be "Fee-Fi-Formeck" Mormeck.

There's a script for a two-hour pilot. ICM has gotten involved. Things are moving apace....
