Kem Nunn's latest...I think we talked about his other books when we met at the clownpunk bar. He's been tagged as a writer of "surf noir." Tapping the Source and The Dogs of Winter were very good; so far this seems to be even better, and it's just getting off the ground. Something tells me you'd like it.

Hard to believe it;s better than Tapping the Source, but I'll grab it. Been reading Seek, Denis Johnson's book of essays,

Love Denis Johnson's fiction. Didn't know he had a book of essays out.

Yup, it's a lot of his old journalism pieces, from Rolling Stone, etc. Good stuff.

I started SEEK, but put it down and never got around to picking it up again. But I've gotta say, I'm still having nightmares about Johnson's visions of the Liberian Civil War. A very good working definition of Hell. "Harrowing" doesn't even begin...Definitely planning on finishing that book one of these days.

TAPPING THE SOURCE has the bright clean spark of a near-perfect first novel, but I remember feeling that it was in some ways awkward (part of its charm). But Nunn is a seasoned writer and TIJUANA STRAITS is richer, better written, and scarier; it's the whole package. In some ways, Lucius, his writing reminds me of yours: he gets into a great stride, effortlessly extracting the deeper metaphors from gritty observation. It's the sort of novel Robert Stone doesn't write anymore...a direct descendant of DOG SOLDIERS (with some tableaux that are like surreal nods to Cormac McCarthy).

That's not intended as a dig at Stone. BAY OF SOULS had two unforgettable scenes: the creepy hunting scene at the beginning, and the lurid diving sequence toward the end. Since it was a fairly short novel, these more than carried the whole book.

Thanks, Mark. I started to pick it up online the other day, but found my credit had been reduced to zero by identity theft. Thankfully, my card was nearly maxed out, but it nontheless put a hitch in my git-a-long purchase wise.

When?????

I just watched the original movie again for the first time in 30 years or so, and I must admit, it still was quite enjoyable watching a vampire beat up the entire Las Vegas Police Department.
