Hey Lucius,

Abebooks sent me a notice this morning that a couple of booksellers in the U.K. have copies of 'A Handbook of American Prayer' for sale. Yep, I looked twice and they're still there! Any word on when the North American copies hit the stands?

Cheers, Bruce

No they don't, Bruce. Because I'm revising the last forty pages as I sit here this morning. I'm handing it in next week and that's the facts. I imagine that as soon as they get the book, they're going to slam it out, because due to an inadvertant posting of the book on Amazon, they have a lot of orders...

Thanks Lucius. Their viggerish is actually pretty steep.

Yeah, the American edition is thusfar the only edition. It hasn't been offered abroad. So buy American. :-)

Hey Lucius!

Congratulations are in order for 'A Handbook of American Prayer'! Been looking forward to that for a time, better late than never :0)

Great news, indeed. August looks like a busy month publication.

Thanks, Bruce.

I reckon August is the cruelest month, breeding genre novels out of the dead land.

Wasn't this book going to published years ago? I was looking forward to it, and then all of a sudden, it seemed to vanish.

Joe...I must have missed this post. Sorry. Yeah, Prayer was due in the 90s. I lost it on a laptop computer. Data retrieval proved ineffective. It was depressing, so I didn't immediately try to rewrite it. Now I'm glad it happened, because this version's better, I think.

I see what looks suspiciously like a real hardcopy of 'Handbook' on your website, Lucius. Is it imminent, or is Bob Kruger toying with our emotions yet again?

Most excellent!

Mark Ziesing said he'd thought the earlier draft was some of your finest work; I've looked forward to reading it for a long time.

After the deluge of your writing has hit the stands [Viator, Trujillo, Handbook, Weapons, etc.], will you still be off to Honduras? Some time on the beach would be well deserved.

Be well, and have a great birthday.

Cheers, Bruce

I got my copy of HANDBOOK today---I'm happy to see it's finally a book. And at $22.00, I think it's a well-priced hardcover too (though I've got to say, I think the cover image would have worked better if they hadn't used slick paper for the dustjacket; a rough, unfinished cover dj would have worked better, I think).

Yeah, I thought so too...But it's better than it was. You should have seen the original cover...then maybe you did! At least they listened to me and changed it.

Just got my copy a couple of days ago also. (And I'm enjoying the novel quite a bit.)
I agree that a rougher cover would have looked better.
At least, Lucius, you got some say in the cover. JGHO, for all of his other great qualities as editor/publisher, forced us to choose between two ugly covers, and we went with the least awful. But it would have been nice to have a cover to be at least somewhat not embarrassed about...
But he usually does a good job with your books. The HC of Valentine is gorgeous.

Oh, I sort of like it! Other than the orange thing that seems stuck in, the overall image is pretty powerful.

Where an image of the actual book? I haven't seen a copy.

oh, it was that. you know, i saw that at amazon a while back, and i have to admit that it didn't even click with me that it was a sign overlooking a parking lot. think you might be on a good thing by being rid of it, lucius.

thanks for the link, gordon.

Lucius,
New cover is gorgeous. (I don't know what the book is _about_ so don't know about the appropriateness of the first cover)

I assume Four Walls knows I should get a copy?

Hey Lucius, I have a question. I received an e-mail today from Amazon.com saying that they are shipping my order for A Handbook of American Prayer. I notice though that they are charging me the price as listed a year ago. I ordered your book when it was originally posted on their site, but the final price is several bucks more. Does this mean you're going to make a lot less money due to many of us ordering your book too soon?

No. When the bookstore makes a pricing mistake, it's the bookstore's loss, and doesn't reflect on anyone else. Some bookstores'll tell you you have to pay the higher price; Amazon.com is good about, when they sell something underpriced, honoring that.

At least, that's how I think it works. Many's the time that I've gotten things extremely cheap from Amazon because they've made mistakes in their catalogue. . .

Cool. Today I thought I did the wrong thing by ordering early, even though I knew it wasn't finished when I ordered it. I thought it would be a good idea to have preorders to signal interest in Lucius' work. Whether that has any effect or not, I'm pleased to read that Lucius won't take the hit from Amazon.com's mistake.

Lucius---

That was a good reading from the book last night. Next time, though, I think you'll need to wear a miner's helmet with a lamp in it so you can see the pages.
