Hi, Steph,

Thought you might like to see John Toon's review of The Year of our War at infinity plus:
http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/yearofourwar.htm

He concludes: "Mere commentary can't do this book justice. Its atmosphere, intricacy and craftsmanship -- astonishingly well-honed for a debut novel -- should speak for themselves. The imaginative power Swainston has put into The Year of Our War is phenomenal; it deserves to be read, that's all there is to it."

Thanks, Keith. That my favourite review. It mentions Peake as an influence - rather than Mieville who is not an influence on Castle. So that's right and I'm really thrilled to have such a good review. Thanks to John Toon.

My other favourite review is Gary Wolfe's in Locus. He linked 'scolopendium' to scopolamine and is absolutely right. Brilliant.

Farah in Vector wrote a review in Vector that's my favourite. I'm grateful to her for looking at Lightning's character.

The enthusiastic review at
http://trashotron.com/agony/reviews/2003/swainston-year_of_our_war.htm
was really exciting because it was the first and it's still my favourite.

Having said all that, watch out for No Present Like Time. I wanted to talk about the Bradford riots, I got angry about a present war (who isn't?), I fell in love with accounts of voyages of exploration - Cook, Raleigh, Drake, Columbus, Hakluyt and Raphael out of Utopia. I made the sword fighting as realistic as possible which meant bounding around the house with fencing foils in a dangerous fashion.

That's all I'm going to say about NPLT for now.

Steph, hello. Haven't read the book yet, just picked it up; have selected it as one of two books for an upcoming reader's discussion group. Just a hi.
