I've been wondering, just recently, why ghost stories seem to be making such a comeback all of a sudden. On top of Ellen's excellent The Dark antho, I've seen numerous short stories and a bunch of novels, including books by Greg Bear and Sean Stewart, and I see that Jeffrey Ford has a novel coming up too. I'm curious whether anyone here has any opinions?

It took me three years to sell The Dark and at the time I tried to persuade publishers that the ghost story was back as a result of The Sixth Sense and The Blair Witch Project, both of which came in 1999.
Also Glen Hirshberg began to produce his excellent ghost stories beginning in 2000.
I don't know why those two movies caught on when they did but I think they're at least partly responsible. (although they weren't my inspiration).
