Wish that more folk were interested in discussions over here.

But looks like folk are drawn to LJ.

Yup. It's easier to get discussions going on LJ.

Indeed, I think these threads are not so conducive to 'name'-led discussions as LJ is. However, one might miss the passing impulse browser (new blood), if one doesn't maintain a presence at message boards like these. Just a thought.

I find messageboards to be more conducive for extended comments on threads. It's also easier to locate a thread from a year or two on a messageboard.

Blogs do have their advantages though and one of them at the moment appears to be reader interest.

There are pros and cons. But if I am anything to go by, I find myself, for good or ill, very rarely visiting individual blogs, even those blogs of close colleagues or friends.

Fair enough.

I think that blogs can be useful for promoting books and whatnot.

Of course the worst case scenario is to get embroiled in conflict which could completely counteract those promotional efforts :-)

Yes, message boards are certainly more prone to conflict than blogs are. (Possibly because it is often mainly friends who gather at blogs??)

Yes. Seems that it's more likely to be warring blogs where the parties fight each other at their respective blogs.

I'm ok with constructive conflict.

I'll still be looking in over here but it's gotten very quiet in the past few months. I instantly had over 100 people checking out my blog because their' connected to various "friends." That doesn't happen here, unfortunately.

Yep. It gets a bit weird seeing all my posts here.

Perhaps if I call you a dung beetle lots of folk will stop by to say hi :-)

Though I was quite against the idea at first, I started a blog a few months ago. I am not sure who visits it, since most people don't leave comments, but I am quite sure it has been helpful in having at least a few more people read my books. I think the message board system is better--but only if it is vibrant. Otherwise, the blog might be the way to go.

Same here Brendan. This Board used to be wonderful until the spam attacks. That killed it, unfortunately. Although I check things out here regularly, it's pretty dead for the most part.

This and F&SF are the only threads I've noticed with regular posts lately.

And DFL and Nemonymous boards. :-)
Well, fitfully...
(I've also been enticing people to NS Boards with free books)

I'll try to pay attention here, but it's just soooo depressing.

Great brunch with friends today at Dos Caminos in Soho: prickly pear frozen margarita, excellent guacamole, and huevos rancheros. I'm still full.
