January 2007

I co-edit the World Fantasy Award winning anthology series The Yearís Best Fantasy and Horror (St. Martin's Press) with Kelly Link & Gavin Grant. We are now reading for the 21st volume, which will include all material published in 2007.
I am looking for stories from all branches of horror: from the traditional-supernatural to the borderline, including high-tech sf horror, supernatural stories, psychological horror, dark thrillers, or anything else that might qualify. If in doubt, send it. This is a reprint anthology so I am only reading material published in or about to be published in 2007. Submission deadline for stories is December 15th 2007. Anything sent after this deadline will reach me too late. If a magazine, anthology, or collection youíre in or you edit is coming out by December 31st, you can send me galleys or manuscripts so that I can judge the stories in time. No email submissions. I strongly suggest that authors check with their publishers that they are sending review copies out to me as I donít have time or energy to nag publishers to get me material. I request it once (maybe twice) and thatís it.

There are summations of "the year in horror," and "the year in fantasy" in the front of each volume. These include novels, nonfiction, art books, and in my section, "odds and ends"-- material that doesn't fit anywhere else but that I feel might interest the horror reader. But I have to be aware of this material in order to mention it. The deadline for this section is January 30th, 2008.

Kelly & Gavin cover fantasy and I cover horror. If you consider something both, send a copy to each of us. We do not confer on our choices.

****I do not want to receive manuscripts from authors of stories from venues that itís likely I already receive regularly (like Interzone, The Third Alternative, Cemetery Dance, Subterranean, Postscripts, Weird Tales, F&SF, etc) or from anthologies and collections, unless I don't have or canít get that anthology or collection. What I would prefer is if you contact your publisher and ask him/her to send me the magazine or book.
And please do not send a SASE. If I choose a story you will be informed. If you want to confirm that IĎve received something, enclose a self-addressed-stamped postcard and I will let you know the date it arrived. For stories that appear on the web, please send me (or have the publisher send me) print-outs of your story.

Ellen, you do keep an eye on Ellery Queen's, don't you? Because I've been reading the April/May double issue and there's a pretty good horror story by Joyce Carol Oates, "Valentine, July Heat Wave". (There's also a weird fantastical/historical story that I don't actually think works very well, "Ivory Crossroads", by James Powell.)

I remember another Oates tale from Ellery Queen's, "The Sky Blue Ball," making it into a Year's Best. Not sure if Ellen or Terri took it.

Rich,
Thanks. Yes I do, and Michael, you're correct. I took that story.
I'll keep an eye out for the new Oates but you mean the March/April issue, I think.

Powell is always weird and I think Terri might have taken one of his stories once--or maybe I did--about a clown.

Whoopie! I've begun reading for Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 2007: 21st Annual Collection and already have several stories and poems on my short list. Not telling what....

Not sure whether to say hurrah or condolences. Having good stories to read is always a plus, but I'd think having an abundance of good stories to choose from would make the job harder. "I love this... but I love this one too, and there's no room for both. Argggh!"

Hi Richard,
Well, the final part of editing the anthology is whittling down the wordage to what the horror half can accomodate. I always know that novellas are not going to fit in (I think I've taken two or three over the years--defined by the Nebula/Hugo rules--over 17,500 words).

This past year as in two times in the past, I had to decide between two stories with similiar themes and scene and went back and forth reading and rereading each till I made a decision.

Hopefully you'll get a copy of Japanese Dreams from Prime. There's some cool stories in their, including a great ghost story from a fellow Clarionite. My tale has some monsters. Or might be a monster. I forget.

Just started reading Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque by Joyce Carol Oates and couldn't help but notice that it was dedicated to someone by the name of Ellen Datlow. Cool.
