Mark: He does look happy but I think he has better photos of himself that he prefers to use I'm going to be upgrading my digital in a few weeks and giving my current one to my sister. We'll see how soon I'll figure out how to use and download photos from the new one --they should be sharper. I want to get a 4.0 pixil instead of what I've got. |

What kind of camera are you using, Ellen? |

Currently a digital canon elph SD100. Which reminds me. I was trying to switch to B&W on Saturday and even with the instructions in front of me, could NOT figure out how to do it. Someone with me couldn't either. Anyone have this model and have a clue? I passed my first digital (Toshiba) on to my sister when I deced to upgrade. The elf is tiny and easily rechargeable. I can take the recharger with me, it's so small). |

Here's a PDF manual I recommend downloading and archiving on your computer. I did the same for my Fujifilm (which I adore), and it's saved me a number of times. p90 describes how to shoot black and white. According to that manual, you change the "photo effect" by going to the FUNC menu, then you select B/W and press the FUNC button. (As an aside, here's a photo I did last weekend with my fujifilm.) |

Thanks Jeremy. That's the booklet I have. I was able to get rid of the annoying chirping that I somehow managed to set into Saturday and at least found the option for B&W but still can't figure out how to actually set it. Arghh. I'll try again later. |

Beautiful shot Jeremy. Was it photoshopped a bit? |

JeremyT
| | Posted on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 10:43 am: | |
Thanks! Yeah, I did the sepia tone effect as a duotones (with some levels tweaking) in Photoshop. The default sepia tone on the camera is just way too heavy for my taste. My only strength as a photographer is in composition, so I rely on photoshop to help make up for my technical deficiencies. A print's a print, I say :-D |

Jeremy, I have a very good eye in B&W and an ok eye in color. I want to go back to B&W more but have to remember to shoot in color when Locus wants me to send them photos from big events. |

JeremyT
| | Posted on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 08:31 am: | |
With your camera, it probably doesn't matter too much if you shoot the photo in color and convert it to B&W in photoshop, does it? That's what I do when I shoot black and white photos. Although, come to think, that might be blasphemy to photographers who know more than I do... |

I've just noticed that the intro was truncated in the creation of the pdf file by the publisher of Simulacrum. It should read (and my webmaster will hopefully fix it soon): Currently, Ellen Datlow is tied for winning the most World Fantasy Awards in the organization's history—seven. With co-editor Terri Windling, she has won the Bram Stoker Award for The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror #13, has received multiple Hugo Award nominations for Best Editor, and won the Hugo Award for Best Editor in 2002. |

Hi Ellen, I can't load up this page: http://www.datlow.com/gallery/friends/torcon_03.html It came up as a small jpeg on a web search - I wanted to ask you if it might be possible to use the pic of myself that is on the site (I'm not sure who took it - was it you?). Trading cards for WorldCon are on the horizon and it's one of the best photos of me I've seen. But I know you're busy, and if it isn't possible, not to worry. Many thanks, Liz W

Yeah, I'm on IE6. When I peeked at the source code for the page, the pictures that load as a line have empty quotes for height, (width = "140" height = "") which I was guessing was what was messing with it. I didn't even think to check it in other browsers. |

There are some updates on my personal website's front page--and sooooooon--I hope, photos from NZ and Australia should begin appearing. So keep watching the web! Speaking of webs, now that I'm home I am SO sorry that I didn't photograph one of the huntsman spiders that were all over the walls in the farmhouse I stayed in in Tasmania. I honestly didn't think of it at the time as I was totally intimidated by them. The biggest was on my white comforter one evening when I went into the room where I was sleeping. It was literally as large as my fist. Ick! but I flicked it off the comforter (as I once did with a warm, wet mouse my darling cats left for my on my bed) and it scurried under the door into the living room. |

I think if you go to Australia they make you hold a koala. I don't think anyone ever left the country without koala-holding. Do they feel sort of like really big cats? |

Ellen Datlow
| | Posted on Sunday, February 13, 2005 - 07:16 pm: | |
Well, it was hard to get a good feel for it as I had to hold it a very specific way--hands under its bottom so it could sit as if on a swing. So I had no hands free to pet it but I could nuzzle it. Different shape from a cat. I hold my cats tummy up (for as long as they'll let me :-) ) |

I actually have a largish photo that was taken by the koala handlers--you have to pay for it and then you can take your own. It's not as good as the ones Michael Swanwick or Robert Hoge took (I forget now who took them). Oh yes, but I don't think I could have gotten it through customs--I don't have any spare eucalyptus leaves around the apt :-) And..my cats would kill me--and it. |
