I'll be away in Thailand, on a little island called Ko Tao, from August 16 - September 9.

Coming along in the suitcase are an alien baby, and the following:
THE PORTRAIT OF MRS CHARBUQE, Jeffrey Ford
THE POISON MASTER, Liz Williams
NATURAL HISTORY, Justina Robson
NIGHTWOOD, Djuna Barnes
THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, Carson McCullers
THE HIGH LORD, Trudi Canavan
CARNEVALE, M.R. Lovric
THIS CRAFT OF VERSE, Borges

THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, Carson McCullers

I love that novel. I will probably never forget the opening scenes where she sneaks across town to listen to classical music under the window, nor the mute's silver pencil/card.

That Ford book is something special too.

Just by luck, because it was lying on a 'books going cheap' table, I picked up a McCullers, THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING. It knocked me head over heels. I thought it skimmed the edge of reality while at the same time being utterly real. It convinced me - or reminded me, really - that life really is this strange. The characters seemed to live out, in the flesh, desires that are more often kept locked up in the mind. And the writing was to die for. I can't wait to read LONELY HUNTER.
