Psychiatrist Anna Fels has written a brilliant book, Necessary Dreams: Ambition in Women's Changing Lives, that explains the importance to women of mastering a skill and receiving recognition for it. This book gives a clearheaded analysis of how far women have come and how much farther we need to go before gender equality is more than a nice, but elusive, goal.
Every woman from teenager on up needs to read this book. For that matter, men need to read it, too, especially if they have wives or daughters or women friends. Or teach women students. Or supervise women on the job. Or edit SF magazines. Or run a major US university. (Especially if they run a major US university and tend to talk too much.)
To understand in detail why you should buy and read this book, see my review online on Broad Universe's Broadsheet. The paperback edition of the book just came out and you can get copies at all the online book stores and probably your local ones as well. Maybe even in your public library.
Comments welcome about either the review or the book.
