This message is for anyone in the regional Southeast, and primarily for those of you in North Carolina:

I am writing to invite you to participate as a volunteer at the 2004 North Carolina Literary Festival. The event will be held at North Carolina State University from April 15 through 18. The Festival is a biennial event, free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by and rotates between North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This year, over seventy-five southern writers and performers will be featured. Alice Walker, Pulitzer-prize winning author of The Color Purple, will kick off the event on Thursday, April 15th. Festivities will continue Friday evening with keynote speaker Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River. Also included are Kaye Gibbons, Orson Scott Card, Jill McCorkle, Daniel Wallace, Robert Morgan, Jay Wright, Lee Smith, Ron Rash, Clyde Edgerton, Sarah Dessen, and Silas House, among many others. Events on Saturday and Sunday will feature authors, storytellers, and performers designed for readers of all ages, educational backgrounds, and literary interests.

[Skiffy authors attending: Orson Scott Card, Mark Van Name, Dale Bailey, Richard Butner, Andy Duncan, Kelly Link, John Kessel and Karen Joy Fowler.]

As a volunteer, you will be participating in an extraordinary event. Because of the number and caliber of southern authors who will be participating in readings and panel discussions throughout the Festival, we are expecting to see a crowd of nearly 10,000 over the course of the weekend (weather permitting). The audience will include avid readers, published writers, faculty and staff from various academic institutions, children, college students, and the general public. Although the majority of the attendees are from North Carolina, we also have some visitors from neighboring states, and from as far away as the Midwest.

The duties that the volunteers will need to fulfill include event setup, manning the children's tent, escorting authors to and from various events, helping with merchandise sales, volunteer check-in, assisting with author book signings, and transporting authors to and from RDU Airport. Each of these areas will have a volunteer team leader who will be in charge and will report to me.

We hope that you will consider joining us for this truly exciting occasion. If so, please fill out the online volunteer form so that I can get a good idea of when and where you would be available to help. The deadline to submit a volunteer form is April 2, 2004. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss these opportunities further or if you have any questions. I can be reached at (919) 513-7701 or via e-mail at jelundbe@unity.ncsu.edu. Thank you for your time and consideration, and please forward this message to whomever you feel would be interested.

Sincerely,

Jason Erik Lundberg
Assistant Coordinator

Just got home from the Alice Walker reading/reception. It's amazing how quiet she speaks, so that you have to pay attention to every words she says. Even her prose sounds like poetry. Cool lady.

An official wrap-up of the festival is at my online journal. Go see the hell I had to endure.
