For those of you who don't know (and this would be most of you), I'm getting married in less than two weeks to Janet Chui. We were out this past weekend at the mall, and she bought me a shiny new pocket watch as her wedding gift to me. I've always wanted one, and this one has a spot in the opposite face for a photo. It's very shiny. She also got it engraved on the cover.

So here's the contest: try to guess what's engraved on my new fancy-schmancy pocket watch, and the winner gets a copy of Zoran Živkovic's The Book/The Writer from Prime. The book is in brand new condition, and the only reason I'm giving it away is because Zoran graciously sent me a copy of the original Polaris editions recently.

Happy guessing!

I tried to find the reference to "I busta you face" and couldn't find it. A kid at school used to have a shirt that said "You toucha the shirt, I busta you face," but I'm not sure if there's any reference point beyond that.

It may be a very regional and temporal in-joke, so I thought I ought to explain it.

Oh, here's another guess: "I'm watching you!"

(Get it?)

I bet she put one of these jokes on:

What time is it when an elephant sits on your fence?

Time to get a new fence!

How about this one:

Because he wanted to see time fly!

No, I know! She put on the lyrics from the Culture Club:

Time won't give me time. And time makes lovers feel like they've got something real, and you and me, you know we've got nothing but time....

Wow, Trent, sixteen excellent guesses. But unfortunately, not one of them correct.

Keep trying!

Here are some from my journal:

Nick Mamatas: "I keeeel you with one punch to yer st00pit haid!"

Rachel Heslin: "Boot to the head!"

Jon Hansen: "If you lose this I'll kill you, love Janet"

Which are all hilarious. And still not correct.

The contest continues!

I don't know why Janet would give you a watch with someone else's baby picture in it.

What a strange girl.

Actually, Trent, it came with the picture of another wedding couple inside, which was really strange. I almost felt like tracking down the couple to give their watch back to them, but I'm too greedy for that.

And Jeff, for the size of the watch, a prenup would would probably have to be 1-pt, unless it was something like, "You cheat on me, I get your stuff." Good guess, tho. :-)

Jamie, Janet is Buddhist, so the Qu'ran wouldn't really fit. Literally or in terms of appropriateness.

John, the inscription is in words, but good thinking outside the box.

Okay, the contest is over, and the winner is Lena DeTar, who stayed with us this weekend and asked me all about Zoran, and saw the watch in person, and read the inscription out loud. Good try, all of you.
