I am going to be doing random and sporadic commentary on some works that I've recently read and enjoyed, for whatever reason.

Here is a first -- accidentally seen recommended on Thomas Seay's blog, a link to Kij Johnson's new story up on SCIFICTION, "At the Mouth of the River of Bees."

This is a piece that can get under your skin. And the odd thing is, I think it is rather imperfect in overall theme, flawed somehow, and the ending/resolution could have been made stronger, more seamlessly *right*.

And yet, as it stands, it's a striking work. Its impact works for me as a whole.

Recommended.

I am in the first chapter of K.J. Bishop's THE ETCHED CITY and loving it already -- great atmosphere and world texture....
