Has anyone been to the Clarion web site lately? Here's a link:

Here's what it says:

BREAKING NEWS

Updated 7/08/03 15:20 EDT  We have recently been informed that Clarion's funding from Michigan State University has been discontinued after the current 2003 workshop.  The University has said that in light of the University's budget crisis, it is unable to support or subsidize the Clarion Workshop.  We are, of course, very disappointed at this development and still hope that the University can be persuaded to change its position.  Nevertheless, we are also actively exploring ways to keep the Workshop alive and well elsewhere, such as by moving to another educational institution or going independent.

We ask that Clarion graduates, past Writers-in-Residence and friends help us find ways to keep Clarion alive.  Please send suggestions via email to clarion@msu.edu or contact us by phone or mail.  Thank you to everyone who has already sent or will send emails and letters of support. We will try to answer individual questions and comments as soon as possible.

The discontinuation of University funding will not affect the current 2003 workshop.  However, as Eileen Gunn has said on boingboing, "...preparation for next year's workshop starts within a month or two of the end of this year's workshop -- the workshop must line up instructors, write marketing materials, place ads, distribute flyers, etc., by November in order to have submissions coming in early next year, which is needed to have accepted students by April, which is needed to confirm to everyone involved that there will indeed be a workshop in June."  We have time, but not as much as we would like.

NEW: The amount and quality of emails and letters is overwhelming, and the University administrators are being affected.  We ask that everyone who has not yet sent an email send one to Interim President and Provost Lou Anna K. Simon and Dean Wendy K.Wilkins, with a copy to us at clarion@msu.edu.  Time is still of the essence.  Thank you all for your support.   We will let you know here on the website what happens as the situation develops.
