If you are indeed leaving, Jeff, could you please at least leave the board up for a bit so we don't lose all the neat odds and ends that have accumulated here over time?

Jeff: I hope you were demonstrating a point and are not seriously going to drop off the board. For many of us out here in internet land it is informative and exhilirating to be conversing with you and Lucius and Ellen and Gordon and all the rest. What happen to the thick skins we're supposed to have? It is all advice, opinions, and playful banter isn't it? Take it or leave it. But there's a lot of experience here many of us need to hear. Don't close us all out.

MarcL: With all the concern over the Pope and the state of the world on Lucius' board, I'll never forget the picture of Bea Arthur. Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand. But is JF leaving? How? How does everyone know except me (and many others) that JF's leaving?

He's the only person I've came across who loves Robert Louis Stevenson as much as I do (and some others too).

But, then again, that's why JF is such a good writer.

For RLS adoration, also check out James Blaylock. The influence is strong in his work, and I think Jim taught (maybe still teaches) courses in Stevenson's work.

Brian Aldiss wrote a great story (in New Pathways years ago) about alien invaders who were Stevenson enthusiasts.

Not that any of this is a replacement for Jeff.

After where you've put them, Stevie Baby (the "B" does stand for "Baby", right?)?

But we're detracting.

A mention of Stevenson deserves the mention of 'The Merry Men.'

This, for me, is one of the greatest short stories ever told. 'The Suicide Club' (a favorite of JF's) must be one of the greatest also. In fact, the SC is probably better for its outright modernity than the MM.

But your recommendation, MarcL, for Brian Aldiss certainly needs to be checked out. Sounds extremely bizarre and very much appropriate.

Sorry folks, allowing myself to be distracted (seems like I'm being stalked! And I'm nobody, too. What a world). Difficult to resist the reaction.

But JF, I wanted to ask you about Stevenson's essays, whether you are as familiar with them as you are with the stories? There are one or two I've read that rank amongst the best things I've ever laid eyes on.

An Apology for Idlers, for iinstance, or the much acclaimed A Gossip On Romance.

Highly receommended to everyone, specially in the context of modern day fiction.

Another one or two spring to mind, but I'll leave it at that.

Running out of whisky. Damn. And the hours of the night are wearing thin.

I think I will go read, than you, and money can;t buy you wit, sorry.

Anyway, I thought we were just joking around. I hope you aren't taking this seriously because I'm not.

Best that you concentrate on your exam, Stevie baby. I sense failure ahead, and all because you've wasted your time pursuing a particular species of hilarity that I, and others, just "don't get".

I hope the exam is on decorum. In this respect, I've taught you a lesson or two that may help you pass your exam after all. Now go, sonny Jim, and be humble.

I only hope to God your exam is not on Italian.

Wow. Well, the main job of a short-order cook is to cook.... The main job of a nurse is to nurse....
What a silly thing to say. The main job of a writer is to relate to people in such a way as to cause them to have something interesting and insightful to say. Some writers hang out in coffee shops; I know one octogenarian writer who realized a life-long dream to write a story while sitting in a coffee shop.
Writers don't just write. If that were the entirety of it, advertising copy writers should be up for the Nobel this year, cuz ain't no prose scribbler alive writes so much. It ain't just about the writing, it's about the who and the where, and that comes directly from...wherever you get it.

Jeff,
I've missed this mess, and have come in to this end of the thread this evening. PLEASE don't go. Ignore the jerks. (And I wish this were everyone's policy, as replying just gives them a venue.) Keep doing what you do so well, and don't let those who get their kicks out of riling those they envy, win. This board shouldn't end up being 'the survival of the hecklers', but it will be if they are paid attention to. I for one have found your postings enormously interesting.

Having spoken too soon, I apologise. It doesn't seem to be a mere case of stupid hecklerism but a blowup about the things that stir us--ideas and perceptions. A principle of one group that I know that works is "be hard on ideas and easy on people". Ideas can be talked about in a manner that leaves the personal out. There can be passionate conversation between people of opposing views, if both can respect the possibility that the other person is not an idiot to think what they do. I have found that many times I knew that only a bloody fool could think a certain way, I learned differently later. One can think that there is no validity to a point of view, and still be able to converse with that person. If there is, though, only a desire to say, "I think X," then there is no wish for conversation. And in that case, a chisel and stone is more appropriate than a bulletin board. This is spoken from the standpoint of someone who also has passionate views.

Apologies for my last remark. It was both uncalled for and untrue. And some of the others were probably overly harsh responses to jests which I mistook for provocations.

Reading AnnaT's message above reminds me that there is much to be gained from this discussion board.

OK, I'm back. My apologies for leaving how and when I did, but I was filled with self-disgust for having allowed myself to become imbroiled in a pointless harrangue and helping to scare Kage Baker off in the process. Not my intention. Luckily, Jeff VanderMeer, good friend that he is, suggested I keep the board up when I asked him to take it away. He told me to give it a few weeks and see how I felt. I've missed the ability to correspond with friends and readers in such an immediate way. In the future, i'll stick to this board and those of others I can count on not to be too easily upset over politics and religious subject matter. I don't detract any of the stuff I said about Catholicism, but... Thanks to all of you who showed good will when I left, and for those of you who wish I'd stay away, sorry. The shop is officially open. Everyone is welcome, even if I said shitty things about you during the last debacle.

You're coming back, JF, coincides with my lovely purchase of The Physiognomy, which I found during a visit to Edinburgh last week in a wonderful little sci-fi/fantasy specialist bookshop (called Transreal) in the Grassmarket, which is where they used to hang people in the days of yore (which seems such a fitting place to buy The Physiognomy!).

Can't wait to get stuck into it.

(StephenB: Thanks for your understanding. Sorry for being so hastily rude to you earlier. It was the whisky--or rather the lack of it--that was to blame).
