Hey Jeff,
I don't know if you're aware that "The Empire of Ice Cream" has made the preliminary ballot of the Nebulas Awards and thus (because there are only four novelettes that made the preliminary ballot) the final ballot in novelette category.
Congratulations!!

I've learned a ton about writing from corresponding with him, and he's made key suggestions on my stories more times then I can count. "The Mask of the Rex" is a terrific story and was my favorite of all the nominees. His The Time Rangers is due out this year, and I know it's going to be great.

Chris and Jeff:

While, I'm crazy enough to write spec fiction, I'm not so crazy as to confuse not winning a Nebula with getting my heart stepped on.

I don't believe those who say that not winning means nothing to them. And I won't. I will say that I don't feel cheated by the result. And wouldn't if the Doctorow or Vukcevich story had won(I haven't read the Castro piece, but given his track record I'm sure the same would be true). No one campaigned. There was no back stabbing.

Among the best things about knowing Jeff is having his stuff appear in my email. 'Empire Of Ice Cream' when I first read it one morning last Fall when I should have been writing my own stuff, was pure magic. I was so taken with the POV character that I begged Jeff to change the sad ending. Wisely, he refused.

Shit. Maybe if he'd done it, he wouldn't have won.

Cornelis: Thanks for sending the link. Ellen sent this to me as well. I checked it out. I appreciate Daniel taking the time and energy to write about a story of mine. I gather that he likes the piece. He'd dropped me a line to that effect when it first came out. I get lost in the essay, though, because I don't understand a lot of those critical terms. So I can't tell whether the ideas are on the money or not. Still it is interesting to see what others find in the stories one writes.

It's very erudite I'm sure, but I'm not entirely convinced that bringing in Rodin and bullfighting helps to shed much light on the story.

Nicholas: You're probably right in what you are saying, but Rodin and bullfighting were two of my favorite parts. I could see the Gates of Hell and the bullfight. What they metaphorically stood for went by me, but they were very vivid. I tend to like that wild eclectic style in criticism, dragging in stuff from all over. That doesn't necessarily mean it's effective, though.

The story deserves every bit of attention it gets. And any time Van Gelder and Rimbaud show up in the same essay, is a time worth celebrating. Though I have no idea what the guy's talking about.
