BACKGROUND
Victoria, a reader in London, got the ball rolling on this. I'd told her I usually draw a Cheshire Cat in copies of City of Saints, when I have the time to do so. She suggested she'd like a meerkat for her copy of Veniss. I told her I didn't know how to draw one--and she very helpfully sent me this link to a drawing as a model for my own efforts:

http://www.crockerfarm.org/ac/gr3/animals/Elisabethpic.htm

I then came up with a very bad computer drawn meerkat, which I shall post below as an example. Victoria did a much more evocative one, which I will also post.

THE CONTEST
So--here's the contest. Draw--via computer or conventionally and then scan in--your meerkat. I'll pick the top three (if there are enough entries) or the top one, with prizes as follows:

First Place - A choice of a copy of the NS hardcover of Veniss Underground, a signed limited, a signed copy of the Pan Mac hardcover of City of Saints, or a signed copy of my forthcoming short story collection Secret Life.

Second Place - a copy of my forthcoming nonfiction collection, Why Should I Cut Your Throat? or the Pan Mac edition of Veniss Underground.

Third Place - a copy of The Exchange, a cool Ambergris chapbook that is otherwise out of print.

HOW TO POST AN IMAGE
For those who don't know how to post an image, type in a back slash immediately followed by the word "image" (don't include the "). Immediately after that, type "{text description}" (again, no actual "). When you click preview/post message, you'll see the normal stuff, but when you click to actually post the message, you'll be prompted to enter a path on your hard drive where the image resides, and once you do that, it'll post to the thread. Just one note--try to keep the file sizes relatively small (under 500kb, which is huge for line drawings). If confused, go to Formatting under the tool bar at the top of the screen.

Question: do they have to be vicious zombie meerkats (like Jeff's) or vampire meerkat's (like Victoria's)? Or can they be nice and soft and cuddly?

This is probably not what you're after, but I thought you might be interested in this photograph of my uncle Desmond on his way to work at London's top secret bio-weapons testing facility located in the disused Down Street underground station.

(He's the one in the bowler hat!)

Hmm. Photocollage is good, but would have to be a separate category, I think. So, perhaps we'll have a second group of prizes depending on how many entrants we get...

Tamar--I'm very sad that you've never met a cuddly meerkat. I will have one sent to you immediately by overnight mail.

What's that green glow around the meerkat? Is it coming from outside of him or slowly being released from inside of him?

Diversions are fine. And the guy is kind of weird. And those meerkats are really under-nourished tiny ones. Not at all like the four-foot-tall ones I've seen.

As expected, this contest is getting weirder and weirder. By the third week of April, I expect it to be insane...

BTW--I'm calling out some people that I *know* can draw.

Rhys Hughes, Michael Cisco, Jim Minz, Lucius Shepard, Deborah Layne, Jay Lake, Stepan Chapman, K. J. Bishop, Ursula K. LeGuin (okay, now I'm stretching), Ellen Datlow, Vera Nazarian...WHERE ARE YOUR MEERKAT DRAWINGS?!?!?!?!?!

Heh.

Here is my take. I figured I might as well show them for what they are - ninja assassins.

Ninja Vanish!

There was originally a third meerkat ninja doing a super stealth leap, but he passed the crapitude threshold and was whited out. Poor fellow. His head is on a plate somewhere.

1)Meerkat Island (JT Lindroos) most like a NYer cartoon! thoughtful humor and composition ;)

2)Canute as Canute VII, because meerkats ARE like snowflakes, I am also bad at math, and there are stripes on its tail... A+ for handwriting...

3)This is hard, because the Ninja meerkats ought to be included but JT's [JK, she means, I think-JV] is funny and Anne's is serious... I'd give it to the Ninjas as it's clever but honorable mention for taking the challenge most seriously to Anne S. and to JT because They're Out There and he colored it in, too!... maybe you could send some cracker jacks to everyone who participated since they all obviously worked very hard at it and consulted some pretty obscure resources...

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you view it or don't view it, I'm too late to enter this competition.

But I have drawn a drawing featuring meercats, and it is one of the very few drawings I've ever done, and it's the only drawing I've ever done in Madrid...
