Looking for help here - I recall reading, at a very tender age, a phenomenal (and phenomenally bleak) short SF story, and now have no idea who wrote it or what it was called.
Briefly, it was set inside a crashed spaceship on a brutally alien world, where generations of humans are using forced draft evolution to prepare themselves for the Outside. Outside, a whole mob of different creatures resident on the planet have identified the crashed ship as an alien invader and are intent on smashing the hull open - they too have been at it for generations. The current ship's captain is called Brendan, and he has tusks, and the story concerns the most recent generation of children the humans have bred.......
Ring any bells?

So apparently a certain V Gridban is asking this same question on the BSFA Community Board, with a few more details of the story. Very interesting coincidence, eh?

It rings a bell... but like you I, still, cannot remember the title. Did any inspiration strike home?
