Wow. Wow. Wow.

It's official now.

The 2005 Hugo news is out. (See Ellen Datlow's thread for the full listing.)

And I just got nominated for the Hugo in the Best Professional Artist category!!!

I couldn't be happier.

The 2005 nominees in this category are:

Jim Burns
Bob Eggleton
Frank Kelly Freas
Donato Giancola
John Picacio

That's some SERIOUS, SERIOUS company. It's my first time to be nominated so I'm so thrilled I'm numb right now.

Wow. :-)

Hey, Bob -- Thanks so much. That's really nice of you to say.

Hey, Rick -- Looks like your TIME RANGERS cover brought some mojo with it, huh? :-) I'll be up in NYC for World Horror in early April so maybe we can have a drink or two at the hotel bar, if you're around. I'll email you in the coming days.

Forrest and Minz -- Thanks, guys! Really appreciate it. It's some nice company to be amongst. Congrats to you and Badger Nation for making it deep into the NCAAs. Go Badgers tomorrow!!! I hope they can pull it off. :-)

Irene --

Thanks so much. It's quite a thing!

Chris Roberson will be up there too, and between my good news and his good news at being nominated for the Campbell, I suspect the adult beverages will be flowing over at our bartable there at WHC, to say the least. It's gonna be fun, isn't it? :-)

See you very soon!!

Sara!

Long time, no hear....what's going on over there? Thanks very much. We'll catch up soon hopefully. Word has it that I may be in Austin in May to do a signing with Mr. Campbell-nominated Roberson over at BookPeople to celebrate the release of HERE, THERE, & EVERYWHERE, his major novel published by Pyr. We'll see what happens....I'll keep you posted.

Richard --

Thanks very much! Hope you're doing well over there.

Hi, Kage!

Thanks a bunch. So you saw the TIME RANGERS cover, huh? :-) Glad you dig it. I'm very much looking forward to reading your new story in the forthcoming ADVENTURE anthology! That's gonna be a fun book! If you haven't seen the front cover yet, I completed it not too long ago and it's up over on the MonkeyBrain website. With your name prominently featured on the cover. But of course!! :-)

Thanks, Irene!

Hearing that from you means a lot. Especially on that one.

I did ADVENTURE; MYTHS FOR THE MODERN AGE; and VICTORIANA in one big heated run, and as the catalog deadline loomed close, I knew the VICTORIANA illustration wasn't quite as finished as I really wanted it to be. So what you see there is the quote-unquote "catalog" version of the cover. It's still pretty raw, believe it or not, and I've got a good bit of work to do on it still, in my mind. So by the time the final printing deadline gets here, I'll have put some more time into it and it'll be even stronger in its execution, I think.

Chris feels really good about it, so I know it's on the right track and I've gotten some other very positive, unsolicited reactions to it, so I know it's striking a chord, and that's always important.

But I appreciate the honest input to keep me straight. Thanks! :-)

Dear John,

I let out a WHOOP! when I saw your name on the Hugo ballot. I've loved your work ever since I first saw it, and I think your cover for Chris Roberson's book is one of your best. Speaking of J.P. covers, when will Golden Gryphon be releasing the second George Effinger collection? Wasn't it supposed to come out in April of 2005? I'll be one of the first in line to buy it, of course!

Dara and I had planned to be at World Horror this year, but a little fellow named Asher came along and kind of kicked over those plans. However, I'll be at ArmadilloCon again this year, possibly with the family, and there's a chance that I'll make World Fantasy, too. Also, we'll all be at Capclave in Southern Maryland in October, a nice, small, literary con close to where my stepdaughter lives. Don't know whether you can make that one, but it's got a great guest list for such a small con.

Congratulations again, and I hope everything is going as splendidly for you as this nomination suggests.

Josh -- See you in August!!! Go Horns!

JK!! What's up over there? Yeah, I'm gonna be in Scotland for sure. Don't know how I'm gonna afford it, but thankfully, I've got some time to figure it out. I'll be rooming with the great Lou Anders and Chris Roberson'll be there too, so it's gonna be such a blast. As you probably already noticed as well, Chris got nominated for the Campbell Award for Best New Writer, so I'm pretty thrilled for him. I'll be in NYC next week at the World Horror Con. Stop by sometime at the hotel bar and I'm sure you'll find me and Roberson!! It'l be good to see you.

Andy -- Sorry you can't make it out to WHC. Congrats on the baby! It's been a while since you and I talked. Give my best to Dara. It's been crazy over here, but very good. I'll see you in August for ArmadilloCon for sure and I'm sure we'll be in touch long before then. Oh yeah -- and as for the second Effinger book, I think it's an April/May release, but I could be wrong. I'll need to check the Golden Gryphon website to be sure. I just do the covers and then when they come out, they come out. I forget the release dates, but I'm looking forward to it. Take care over there!

PS--I'm hanging in Tucson this week with my wife's parents. Chilling in the hot tub with margeritas and bright sunny days.

Congrats on the Hugo nomination, John. I checked out the Monkey Brain Books site. All your covers are fantastic but the cover for "Myths for the Modern Age" is my favorite. I should not admit it because it kinda shows my age, but that cover evoked an intense feeling of nostalgia in me.

Best.

Hi, Ahmed --

How are you? I appreciate the kind words very much. I'm glad you like those MonkeyBrain covers. It's a great company and they've got a terrific lineup of books and I'm honored to be able to do covers with them. Made me feel good that that MYTHS cover struck a nostalgic chord with you. That's a good sign, I would say! :-)

I'll be sure to check out your journal in the coming days. Thanks for touching base and stay in touch.

Very best,
John

Ha! I had seen the cover for ADVENTURE and I did think it looked like one of yours, but I couldn't find a credit on the site. Seriously cool, John. Plus the image of my name on the same cover with Resnick and Moorcock gives me heart palpitations.

There you go, Kage. Glad you liked that.

Although I can only take credit for trying to make the book look presentable. The real credit for your name being mixed in on the front cover goes to the devious MonkeyBrain marketing staff (which I think all live in the head of one Chris Roberson).

Looking forward to this book's release this fall!

John,

Many, many congrats!

I can't tell you what an honor it is to have a Hugo-nominated artist doing the cover art for the Wold Newton book (MYTHS FOR THE MODERN AGE).

Like I've said elsewhere, when I first saw the cover, it brought a tear to my eye. It's that good.

Best,

Win

Hope to meet you down the road...

Very best,
