The bulk of the subscription copies of this issue are still in transit, but our first checking copies arrived today. I think the 11th is the earliest in the month we've ever gotten any subscription copies. Our contributors haven't even gotten their issues yet, I expect. |

Chas., Now I feel bad. My sub copy showed up on the 13th (new land speed record). Have not yet had a chance to tackle "TPP" but am much looking forward to it. Did you read the Laura Kasischke story? It's dynamite! |

Sam, You're right. Kasischke's story stands well apart from every other story in the issue, including mine. Hope you enjoy TPP. |

Boy, I wish Gordon had another Kasischke story to run in the next issue. Don't you? (BTW, if I don't enjoy TPP, I'll be shocked.) |

Sam, Maybe Gordon will bump another writer from September to make room for a Kasischke story. She's fabulous, and I, for one, wouldn't blame him if he did. |

Well, since I only publish stories by men (okay, an occasional story by a boy slips in), I plan to keep putting Laura Kasischke's name on the cover of each issue but I'll bump the story from issue to issue for months. |

CCF, He used to do it to the late John Morressy. (Until it became impractical.) GVG, Yeah, I like Kasischke. I also like saying Kasischke. Kasischke! |

He's yanking your crank, Gordon. If she were female, she'd be Mme. Rickert. Or Mlle. Rickert. |

This may seem naive, but the Kasischke story did not appear in the issue. New member Shamm's posting seems to say that it did and he read it. Perhaps this is an irony, but it took some while before anyone so much as hinted that the story wasn't there. Mine is the first statement that says clearly that it wasn't in the issue or the posted contents page (providing it does, in fact, post; I re-registered for the other forum), but she was only listed on the cover of the issue. Why's everyone so mum or abstruse about it? At the other F&SF forum, someone immediately pointed out the error. Is it a more honest, more straightforward forum? I've got biff and zow

John, I think that the discussion on this forum about the Kasischke story was just a continuation of the discussion on the other forum (notice it's the same basic group of names involved). Gordon admitted the cover was an honest mistake on his part, and he is running the story in September instead. Some of us were just giving him a hard time (see, for example, the ribbing he got over the issue with no periods). |

Just finished the Political Prisoner. I liked the Political Officer, but I really liked the Political Prisoner. It was a very brutal but very earnest story of survival. |

The Finlay story was excellent. I'm going to have to read "The Political Officer" on the F&SF website now, since its sequel was so good. |

Yeaow!!! I am desolated to learn that the Laura Kasischke story isn’t actually in this issue. I immediately turned to the inside to read her story first, as I am a big fan of Suspicious River (not to diss any of your other contributors; Charles Coleman Finlay was my next target). But at least you’ve reminded me to get some of her other books and read them. Her background as a poet serves her so well: she’s harsh, direct, economical. And Suspicious River is arguably one of the best novels of psychological horror I've read in ten years, though it was, quite understandably, marketed as literary. Mary Turzillo |

My first three issues (June,July and August) tell me I've chosen right magazine of F&SF. Great stories, well written, never obvious. And never a delay on receiving it in Italy. Keep up the good work guys. P.S. Spencer, I can't find the link for "The Political Officer". Can you (or someone else) post it? |

Thanks for your post. I'm sorry to report that "The Political Officer" is no longer online. Our policy with online reprints is that we post them for one month only (except for award nominees, which we post until the award is presented or the nominating period has ended). "The Political Officer" is still available in back issues from us (http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/toc0204.htm) or electronically from Fictionwise: (http://fictionwise.com/ebooks/eBook10619.htm or http://www.fictionwise.com/eBooks/eBook1496.htm?cache). |

My 2 (euro) cents of feedback: * When you read a story online that you like, do you feel inclined to support the publisher of the piece? No. I write too but I publish my works online to permit someone to evaluate my stories and give me feedbacks on my errors. * Have you ever subscribed to a print magazine on account of a story you read on their site? Yes. That's my way to choose them. * Most magazine publishers post their Hugo- and Nebula-nominated stories online for free. If F&SF started charging the cost of an issue to read these stories, would you do so? Why not? * Do you think the prevalence of free short fiction online has made you less inclined to pay for short fiction? No, only because I need something of paper to touch when I read. see you, Chris |
