Double whew!!! Fun game. Rutgers is a gutsy team. ASU 45, Rutgers 40. Those guys just don't quit. Couple of observations on the pool....if my math is correct, AI and Dave made this their 28 point game. You guys are maniacs!!! What the hell were you thinking? THIS game was the one that you were MOST confident in?? Hey, I tip my hat to you. You got the win and that's all that matters. But that cracks me up that this was your 28-pointer. Congrats, fellas. |

Lynn has to get up early tomorrow for work, but we watched that last one to the bitter end. A much better game than I expected. Lynn was hoping rutgers might pull it out in the end. Jersey luck. |

Wow. Well, I only lost one point on that one, though the loss threw me back into the middle of the pack. AI and Dave should be pleased they pulled that off - well done! Rutgers does look pretty gutsy. I went to bed when it was tied 24-24 thinking that they would somehow pull it off. Ah, well, looking forward to the Wolverines spanking the Cornholers. Anyone pick NE? |

I have Michigan. I think the first game is the scary one. I went with Boise State. Back to work today so I'll only get to see the second half of Mich-Neb. |

John Picacio
| | Posted on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 08:15 am: | |
Jeff: Don't get too down on your Boise State pick. It should be a very competitive ballgame, but the rub is the bowl game is happening on Boise State's home field. If you haven't witnessed this field with your own eyes, then be sure to don your Spectravision goggles and behold the Majesty That Is The Blue Turf. If you've seen it already, then you already own the optical scars. If you haven't, check it out if you dare. Don't adjust your television. I picked Boise as well because of that homefield. It's Dan Hawkins' last game as their head coach and that may be a bonus rallying cry for them, but BC will be tough, I suspect. And yeah, I've got Michigan in the second game. I've got very low points on both games, so I may get passed up a bit today, but that'll leave me lurking in the weeds for my big point games coming soon. |

Forrest
| | Posted on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 09:15 am: | |
Boise State/BC will be the more interesting game of the two. Michigan should trounce Nebraska. And that's OK, Alex, I can't take ASU seriously. I still can't . . . Most over-rated team of the past several years. |

Lucius
| | Posted on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 09:40 am: | |
That ASU offense is as good as I've seen. Take them seriously or not, you put any kind of defense with that offense, and they could be great. That was a freshman qb, man. And he's not even the starter. |

jeff ford
| | Posted on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 09:56 am: | |
Lucius: I think they said that it was only the 8th college game for the ASU qb. I was very impressed with him, especially in the latter quarters, of course. Rutgers came out like gangbusters but fell apart as I thought they might. Still, like Alex and Forrest said, the falling apart they did was as close to not falling apart as you can get. ASU's defense does need work. And it amazes me why these college teams don't use the screen pass more often for middle yardage, to make up first downs, etc. They started using it a little more in the latter part of that game last night, but it was pretty non-existent in the first half. Also, although the last ASU goal was successful, the pass into the endzone, it was a foolish play. You mean to tell me that they didn't have it to run the ball in from the 2 yard line? No qb sneak or power run? Foolish, but it worked. I guess that's the reason I'm not a college football coach. Thank christ for all involved. |

Lucius
| | Posted on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 10:17 am: | |
That kid is gonna be great, he was making some awesome throws and was tough as corn beef hash. You don't see many teams run a QB sneak on the two yd line. That's not a high percentage play. And ASU didn't have a power back, so I'm not surprised they threw for it, especially consdering that most defenses sell out on the run in those situations. |

Carpenter's got an arm, no doubt (and some mobility to boot). Except next year there's no Matt Miller or Derek Hagan to catch the ball. I dunno. When I see results commensurate with all the hype, maybe I'll change my mind. But people have been predicting a national championship off and on for them for a while now, and nothing's come of it. I'm not saying they won't be good next year, but after four in-conference losses in what many (you included, Lucius) claim to be a weak Pac-10, it's hard to believe that they can rock anyone's jock. I'll believe it when I see it. Given the low opinion most people had of Rutgers, ASU's close game doesn't register as earth-shattering either. I just get sick of the preseason ASU hype, followed by a fair-to-middling season. I can't buy the hype - not yet, at least. |

You forgot to mention, accurate, He''s very accurate. I agree they've been overhyped, but gee, you seem to have gotten really worked up about it. All I said was, you put a defence with that offence, and they could be great. As for Rutgers, I came close to picking Rutgers in this game. The only reason I picked ASU was because if I picked Rutgers I would have had to slot them in my 17 slot, because that was the only place I had for them, and that's too much to risk on an underdog. If I had known about the ASU flu bug in time, I probably would have picked them. And lost. |

BTW--Explain to me the value of that stupid visual of the two coaches side-by-side during the Rutger's game, filling up a good fourth of the left side of the screen. Just so we can watch two guys pace, one with a clipboard...Jesus. And the commentary--fucking inane. JeffV |

Hey, JV -- I'm with you about that side-by-side...very pitiful. Listening to Bob Davie on color commentary during the Clemson/Colorado game was like water torture for the 21st century. Wow, I didn't realize how bad that guy really was until last night. How many times did he say the following: "I'm gonna tell you why that young man has such a bright future....because he's got game-changing speed." Thanks for the insight, hoss. You suck. |

Sorry if I came across too strong, Lucius. I'm just hatin' the hype. Plus I like the underdog, especially against an over-rated team that's not Wisconsin. Given a good defense, ASU could be great, you're right. And, you're right, he's very accurate, but you can also argue that Rutger's QB was fairly accurate . . . except for the one pick. Jeff: Inane commentary by college football announcers? What? Never! |

Lucius

No worries in that regard, Forrest. The Rutgers guy was good, he didn't have an NFL arm and since the R defence was better, he didn't have to make many throws under fire. |

You know, I'm out of my fucking mind, cause I was saying before I had BSU and Michigan, but I actually had BC for 1 point and Nebraska. Lucius, of course, marked it right, but I was looking at Lynn's list of picks earlier. That's why I was so nonplussed by having picked BS. On the other hand, that only explains half of my fucked upedness, cause I now have Nebraska, but what the hell, they just scored 6 points. I'd have gone through both games without knowing what in gods name was going on if Lynn hadn't come home and told me what teams I actually had. Sorry for the confusion. And John, you're right, the Boise Blue field is a beauty. |

I've got high hopes for Ga. Tech today. On the other hand, I've got 1 measly point riding on Oregon today. Oregon/Oklahoma is a total tossup to me. I couldn't make heads or tails of this one. I think it's gonna be a terrific game. I'm not really sold on Oregon's 10-1 because of strength-of-schedule, but Oklahoma hasn't been Oklahoma this year. Thing about the Sooners is they were really banged up this year and Adrian Peterson should be healthy for this game, and Stoops is one of the best x&o coaches anywhere. Meantime, I wonder if Oregon has a hangover from not being in the BCS (see Cal v. Texas Tech last year in the Holiday Bowl). I think Oklahoma has more to gain from this game, yet despite all of that, I irrationally put one point on Oregon, because I'm hoping that there's some backbone to their 10-1 record. Looking at it now, I wish I would've picked Oklahoma. Should be a heckuva game! |

I like Ga Tech and Oregon today. I don't think Oklahoma's played a helluva lot of competion either. It should be interesting. What they did against decent out of conference opponents -- TCU, UCLA -- wasn't too impressive. Of course that was early in the season. |

Forrest
| | Posted on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 08:09 am: | |
It's not the loss of points that bugs me - it's that the cornholers won. I feel violated. I've got GA Tech for a few and Oregon for a few more. Oklahoma could pull it out, but I think that Oregon has the goods. And Utah is not the Utah of Urban Meyer. |

John Picacio
| | Posted on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 09:12 am: | |
Hey, Darren -- Your point about Oklahoma's sorry play v. TCU and UCLA early in the season is right on. They got better and better as the season went along, and with a one-month layoff to heal key injuries, I think they're gonna be trouble today. Looking back, I think I took Oregon because Oklahoma had a loss to Texas Tech late in the season, and that loss confounds me. So that was the push that made me go Oregon. A Sooner loss is never a painful thing for me. |

Darren S.

John, yeah, that Texas Tech game was a baffler. One could argue either way in this one, I s'pose. Tonight will reveal who has the mettle. This from the paradigm of prognostication who thought Michigan would win by three touchdowns. |

Forrest
| | Posted on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 10:36 am: | |
Darren, I think *all* of us who picked the wolverines thought it would be by three touchdowns . . . at least. And any team that John has designated as the "cousin humpers" has no chance of winning. The voice of Picacio has declared it! |

John Picacio

yeah, their offense doesn't look so hot either, dude. They have the tools to win this one with aplomb, but they're just sucking right now. Hurry, John, call the Utes "cousin humpers" - it will assure our victory . . . or at least we'll have a good laugh while losing our reputations. |

Blasted crimson cousin humpers.... There you go, Forrest. Let's see if that paves the road to victory for us. Long way to go, but long mountain to climb. Ga Tech must not have enough dinero in the athletic budget for good cleats today, because they keep falling down, and Utah keeps making plays. |

Woe to all, for the wrath of the Chicken is mighty. I forgot there are four games tomorrow and not just two. I've got Minnesota, UCLA, South Carolina (I feel confident with the ol' ball coach here), and Miami (good pick, but low points, and I wish I had banked many more points on 'em now that Jamarcus Russell is out for LSU). I'm nervous about Minnesota and UCLA. Two schizo teams right there. I hope Miami/LSU lives up to its potential. Should be a great ballgame. I hope the Miami team that played Va Tech shows up tomorrow and not the team that slept thru the Ga Tech game. Jekyll and Hyde. I'll be watching Miami's O-line. Well, it's been fun ruling, but I think the lead changes hands today. I can't believe I picked UCLA, I can't believe I picked Miami. Virginia...don't make me laugh! Oh, well. I'm ready for ignominy. |

Prepare yourselves, Jeff, Jeff, Alex, and Lucius, to be overtaken. I have 5, 6, and 8 points riding on three of today's games! |

John, you and I are on the same page, except I wasn't so confident about South Carolina - I've only got 12 points on them, even though they were my highest confidence pick of the day. There's a lot of iffy games going on today. If I can move up just one spot, I'm feeling pretty good about my chances. I'll shoot up to the top by the end of all this, thanks to my sad, sad BADgers, the South Florida sloppy-seconds recruiting, Georgia on my mind, and an unstoppable Penn State. |

Good Christ, I'm on the edge of my seat with this virginaia game, on which I think I only have like 5 points, and meanwhile I just noticed UCLA is going down for doughnuts 22 to 7 already in the other game. 4 games today? Mommy, make it stop.

Props to the Bruins. They managed to temporarily stop the hemorraging from my 5-game losing streak. I put big faith in the Ol' Ball Coach. Tie game, 28 all. Someone tell him he's playing Tennessee so he'll start running up the score, and win me a ballgame. |

Damn the Ol' Ball Coach. I could've used those points. Oh well. Tomorrow's another day. I was gonna say something about another Big 12 bowl victory, but I think Lucius'll kill me, so I'll hold my tongue. In the LSU/Miami game today, I've only got two points on Miami, but since I got engaged to my fiancee Traci in September, we've pretty much made a pact to root for each other's teams unless they play each other head to head. So since Traci is a Miami alum and a hardcore Canes fan, I'm officially a hardcore Canes fan this season, and from here on..... So I'm donning my orange and green jersey, as we speak.... |

I can relax with this one, I've only got two points. cause I'm dealing with the Coker factor and I expect LSU to win. Hey, woof all you want, John, but I got an answer for you. And it doesn't change my contention that neither TX or Cal would go undefeated if they played an SEC schedule. Yeah, good call, Lynn.

Yeah, you said it, Lucius. Sorry 'bout that. Blows me away that LSU has this Flynn kid who's just looked dynamite and right behind him, they've got the Perrilloux kid that Texas wanted so badly to take over when Vince is done. All this with Russell the starting QB out. Wow. Looks to me like Perrilloux made a bad decision going to LSU because he ain't gonna dethrone both Russell and Flynn next year. He's probably gonna have to transfer somewhere to get PT. Anyway, LSU just looked amazing tonight. Wow. Traci says that when you crank out the "Fire Coker" t-shirts, she'll take a medium. I guess you can make mine a nice roomy XL. Preferably in black. |

Concerning the chicken, indeed is right. Three wins today and he hasn't moved a beak's worth. He's full of sound and feathers, signifying nothing. Lynn didn't move in rank today, but she was happy as hell just to win all four games. I spent way too much time watching football today, but it was fun. |
