Are you picking Virginia over tech? Ballsy! I really like the Vandy pick over TN. It could be close, but the commode-odors have the gusto and TN is in a funk. I have to agree with all your picks except:

Va Tech over Virginia
South Carolina over Clemson

And I'm iffy on PSU as well, but will pick them with you anyway. I feel like such a "yes" man . . . :-(

I feel that MSU is so schizo a team, I wouldn't bet on them--so I just as well pick against them. I think VA is on an uptick. I'm worried about them for Miami, but really there's no picking this game, it's a coin flip. South Carolina-Clemson, the same. Maybe Spurrier's players believe he's Gandalf and will just ride their faith to victory. Then again, this is a rivalry game, and I'm betting that Clemson's physicality will neutralize Spurrier's mojo. But I'm rooting for Spurrier, of course.

So Pitt and WI are fighting over another recruit - this time it's WR Tamarcus Porter out of Pahokee, FL. I'm thinking he's going to Pitt - his teammate, corner Ricky Gary, has committed to Pitt and is helping in his recruitment. Deborah, why do you keep stealing my best recruits? :-)

Coaches Palermo and White are leaving UW after this season. I'll be curious to see who Bielema pulls in. Palermo recruited well out east, and I'd hate to see us lose our foothold in NJ, where we've done quite well. White, so far as I'm concerned, hasn't done much for the program, and I'm glad Chryst has replaced him. Anyway, the whole recruiting thing is up in the air. Dunno if Bielema can bring someone in with strong connections to FL, TX, or CA, but that would help. OH and MN will always be strong for us, and it might take some time for the NJ thing to peter out. I wish someone was able to keep our best hometown possibilities, though.

Have you guys seen this team? A few weeks ago I watched them manhandle Hawaii 27-13. They didn't look like they could play with USC to me. Granted they scored 40 against Idaho and more against San Diego State, and almost beat Oregon--though I think that's more a comment on Oregon. These west coast teams play punk scedules and are all overrated. If FS scores 30, USC will score 60.

Does anyone think Michigan can beat OSU? Their talent level seems about even, each team has it strengths, Mich O-line v OSU's linebackers, Ginn v Avant and Breaston, but I don't like the coaching match-up. Anyone?

Same with Bama. I picked Bama, but Auburn seems to have a huge offensive edge, and when you rely on your d game after game, sooner or later you crack. I think to win Bama has to find a way to take the pressure off its defense...

Posted on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 07:27 am:

I think MI/OSU is too close to call because there are so many variables. Will OSU get the ball to Ginn? Will Hawk have frequent back-door contact with Hene? Is MI's seeming resurgance a function of playing on tired teams? I think OSU will take it, but this could be one of the more interesting matchups between these two teams in a while.

Haven't seen Auburn enough to know how they'll stack up against Bama. From what I've seen of Bama (which is quite a bit) they have the talent and gusto to beat just about anybody, even though they've had some close ones.

And I don't think Fresno state will win, but I do think they'll keep it close until the 4th quarter. They've had all season to look for chinks in the USC armor. The one team that USC has faced that has been able to rack up points on their opponents - Notre Dame - put the fear of God into the Trojans. Fresno state can do the same if (and this is a big if) they don't penalize themselves to death like they've been wont to do so far this season. Ultimately, though, USC's offense will figure out how to pick apart Fresno's defense in the fourth quarter.

So let it be written, so let it be done . . . :-)

A poll of sportswriters picks the final USC score as 50-20. We'll see how much they (and me, I guess) know.

There's an article in TSN that excoriates Bill Callahan and talks about the Cornholer fans' nostalgia for the Solich years. The writer says it's 50/50 that Callahan will be back. I know which 50% I'm pulling for...Keep Callahan.

Bad news for the rest of the SEC. Steve Spurrier has the inside track on RB Demetrius Goode and WR Jared Wright, both elite HS players. He's also supposed to be slightly in the lead for Neil Clausen, who according to scouts, is the best pure pocket passer to come along in years.

Hope you enjoyed the fight, Lucius. Oddly enough, the BADgers will take third place in Big Ten, provided they win against Hawaii next week (since with a four-way tie for third, the first tiebreaker is overall record...at least I believe it's overall record)

Posted on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 09:43 pm:

The really longwinded fulllength version: even though WI lost to both Northwestern & Iowa, Michigan beat both of those teams, and since WI beat Michigan, the first tie-breaker, head-to-head competition, gets tossed out by the causal chain (if one team had beaten all 3 others, it'd be top dog. If two teams had both beaten two other teams, the two beaten teams are tossed out, and the two winners go to head-to-head tie-breakers. But none of that applies here). Therefore it's overall winning percentage.

Actually, now that I think about it, the BADgers have third-place locked up regardless of Hawaii, because even with a loss, they'd be 8-4, which is a stronger winning percentage than the other three teams with their 7-4 records.

Of course, I'm ready to wake up in the morning and find out my late night musings are meaningless, because these tie-breakers only apply for first place in the conference. To bed, to sleep, perchance ... y'know.

I don't really care about the BADgers, because the Canes, I just found out, got Cokered. For all I care, they could wind up in the Do Da Hillbilly Snow Blower Bowl or the Golden Shower Bowl or the Sinister Demons Will Eat The Winner Bowl. I guess I should watch the tape, but I don't want to.

USC is victorious over Fresno State, 50-42.

USC's the best team in the land. I'm glad they won. If Texas is fortunate enough to win their next 2 games, I want them to get that shot at the two-time defending National Champion.

But USC's National Championship-level defense allowing 42 points???? Come on. The middle of their d-line is very soft. Fresno State doesn't have the team depth or the athletes that USC has, and the Fresno QB killed them with four horrible turnovers in the second half. And despite that, Fresno State still had a shot to win the game (on USC's homefield) until the QB made his final horrible decision of the game with that interception in double-coverage.

USC deserves #1. Reggie Bush deserves the Heisman. But after watching this game, I can't wait to see what Texas' balance and depth can do against that defense, if they get that shot.

Condolences to the Canes. Traci's still pissed over here. I didn't see that Ga Tech loss coming at all.

I did; I said Tech would challenge them; it's the way of the Coker.

I hope Texas kicks the snot out of USC, but I'm not covinced of either defense. I do know one thing -- USC can't rely on second half comebacks to secure the game. I expect them to come out in the Rose Bowl as they did against Okla last year. They got ten games against the junior league, ten trap games--I give Carroll a lot of credit for keeping them motivated. By the time they get around to actually playing a game, they're motivated.

To clarify about Coker -- The Canes are driving, a minute and a half left; they've moved downfield on the strength of two long passes that cover about 45 yards. So Coker calls for another long pass. There's plenty of time; in fact, you want ti use some of that time. Tech is set up for a draw, a screen, but no -- Coker calls for another long pass. Idiot. The QB threw to the wrong receiver, but he's got an excuse; he's a freshman. Coker's a 60 year old idiot.

Couple more things -- Reggie Bush is not Gale Sayers. His hilight reel includes far too many passes caught without a DB in sight and too many runs through wide open holes the width of a pickup truck....

And two, you gotta love Joepa's post-game interviews. The man's brain has rotted and he's just gathering in the glory. America's in love with a senile old fart. He has no exit plan, so we can expect to see him wheeled out onto the sideline wearing a depends and babbling about flapjacks...

Because, Jeff, he's lookin for old men to beat up. He got two million for Mitchell. Trying to set up a fight with Judah for the undisputed welter title. There's a lot of money to be made with Ricky Hatton. They could sell out the soccer stadium in Manchester in a few hours for that one and Floyd can make 140 no problem; but Hatton would be a more difficult opponent than Judah. That's the way the sport's gotten and you can't really blame the boxers. The money's out there and it would be stupid not to go for it. Hatton's doing the same thing next week, fighting Carlos Maussa who owns the WBA junior welter crown -- He got destroyed by Gatti. But I figger we'll see Hatton=Floyd down the line.

Yep, Darren, bleh day....

One more thing about Floyd, why he fought Mitchell. Floyd started as junior lightweight; he always went straight for the toughest guy in his division, but now, at welter, he's at the absolute limit of his size and power. I mean, he's only 5'6". So he's being cautious, trying to grow into the division.

Texas was only down by .006 in the BCS -- It'll be interesting to see who's number one after the A&M game next Friday.

Sorry about the Canes...

It's was only a matter of a time, Josh. Actually, I'm okay with them losing. They're a young team, and I think PSU might have beat them bad. Now they'll likely win their bowl and be better next year.

It doesn't matter who's number 1. Either way, it's Texas and USC...unless you think USC's gonna play down to the level of UCLA.

Condolences, Lucius, on Miami.

Mea Culpa on 'Bama. Condolences there, too, Deborah.

But I did call the USC/Fresno game being close, ne ce pass? or however you say that in Frenchese.

And Clemson surprised me . . .

How about Vanderbilt? Woo hoo! I must say I'm bummed they won't make a bowl game. I like watching Cutler play. Hope he gets picked early in the draft.

Vandy beating the Vols -- that's as low as it gets for the Vols. And the CT (corpulent toad). Are they not bowl eligible.

Yeah, you were right on Fresno, but I believe that's due to SC letting up, cause I think they're gonna clobber Texas.

My $.02 on Mayweather. No disrespect to Mitchell, but he looked way past it. Boxing hates nothing so much as an old "boxer." A puncher can stick around, but once the legs on a cutie go, he's all done. I thought Mitchell put up the best fight he could. It's shameful that the #1 pound for pound guy on the planet draws 6,000 fans. Mayweather desperately needs an opponent like Hatton, because he seems to get colder by the minute. He could end up the million dollar talent who fought for peanuts.

2 million is peanuts? Floyd has fought Castillo, Corrales, Gennaro Hernandez, Gatti (a cruddy opponent, but a high profile fight nonetheless) -- his resume is better than most fighters. What about Hatton? Carlos Mausa is no better an oppenent. Floyd's okay. I see Judah in his future and that's a huge fight in NY. Floyd may be a creep, but he's okay, he'll make his money. And I was at the fight, there were 13000 there.

Then Lampley is guilty of negligent reporting. He said on the air that PBF got only half the 13,000 that RJJ drew.

Maybe there were a lot of freebies, but I've been to the Rose Garden a number of times and 13000 didn't seem out of line. You in the pool?
