Wait a minute...I WROTE HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

My anagram analysis says avoid Newsom: Joe! No swan, man...
By GabrielM on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 01:09 pm:

I think the best stuff off Aquarius is actually that Ta Det Lungt record from Dungen. Sixties style psychedelic rock, sung entirely in Swedish and with all the instruments played by one guy. I have no idea what the fellow's singing about but the music is great.
By Lucius on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 01:25 pm:

Thanks, Gabe...
By Stephen on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 01:47 pm:

Newsom may not be all that great, but she's a better alternative to a lot of popular music out there right now. I don't think I'd go out and seek out her music, but I didn't mind it.

Sounds like you guys have found a good source for some good music alternative's out there...

Gabriel, you're the second person this week to mention Ta Det Lungt. Weird.

Aquarius is a good source of real alternative music. The End Records is one I like too. They normally stick to extreme metal, but some other stuff appears, usually if it's related to metal. Naervaer is one example, since they are made up of metal musicians, but play weird folk with Ennio Morricone influences.

I don't understand why they show those things. Calling CLove a "skanky hole" really shouldn't get you that big a laugh. Yeah, she was a mess, and Andy Dick, there were a lot of jokes about his sexulaity, and Jimmy Kimmels' penis size...It was gross.

I consider this of a piece with the recent spate of Saturday Night Live skits whose punch lines revolve around wordplays on various scatological and sexual subjects (ie, "Colonel Angus," the Italian "corksoakers," etc.). They even did a skit where the Pentagon was developing a "pleasure bot" that was a guy sitting in a barrel. I swear, the oldest dirty joke on record. Wit is definitely dead.

I agree with Lucius, I don't like Thompson's voice. I've seen him play live and he's an impressive player though. I like when he gets away from his English folk thing. Ever hear a record he did with Fred Frith, French (from Beefheart) and Henry Kaiser? "Live Love Loaf and Laugh" (or something like that). Good album.

I'm going to check out GRIZZLY MAN.

I don't mind RT's voice, though clearly it's about seeing the man play guitar. And I enjoy him playing acoustic just as much as playing electric. More sometimes, though I agree his rock is a lot better than his folk stuff. And his 1000 Years of Popular Music is a lot of fun. Not to mention the man has written some good tunes over the years, though alot of it has been for other performers. And while I know it's his most overplayed song, I love 1952 Vincent Black Lightning every time I hear it. I get all tingly...

Sorry. I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussions of RSINXS: Btw, Jordis stunk. Absolutely no soul to her performance at all. it was pretty, but Knockin' On Heaven's Door is not about pretty. the only two I can stand are Suzie and Marty. I think I like Marty 'cause he looks like a Japanese Anime hero (or heroine for that matter.)

Tommy Lee was a ridiculous show. The whole notion of a reality show is there is some kind of challenge to it. If Lee were going to college and would win a prize if he could pull a 3.0, so that he really had to work, it might be entertaining, but this is b.s. He's not even enrolled as a student. All he's doing is play-acting at being a rocker on a college campus. What a dorky program.

On the RS: INXS tip, why does everyone fall all over Jordis? "Knocking on Heaven's Door" a hard song to sing? Why? Too fast? Not melodic enough? Give me a break. Her voice was OK, but she botched the lyrics three or four times and even changed some of them, which is a cardinal sin in a Dylan tune, in my book. I would put her in the bottom three.

Deanna was no good. Nor was J.D.

Top three, and it was an easy pick...Ty (who kicked ass) #1, dare I say it?-- Mig #2, Marty #3. When Mig stops with all the pretty boyband posturing and crapola, he can actually play some music. His "Show Me the Way" was quite all right. Marty did a decent job with a very tough song.

Ty being in the bottom three at show's end shows that the RSINXS audience has its taste stuck up its collective booty.

J.D. should get bounced just for being a dick on Mon. night.

I thought Mig was godawful. Ty''s okay, but he's predicatble. And he did stick out his tongue three times...I couldn't pick a winnner.

As for Jordis...she tried to turn Knockin on Heavens Door into the Wind Beneath My Wings...

Hey Lucius:
Re Jordis: EXACTLY.
The way they fawned all over her made me want to puke.

Re Marty: as I said, I like him because he looks like an Anime hero. he's perfect as the INXS lead. Either he or Ty will be the one. (Maybe Mig, but he's so clearly a Broadway guy, not a rocker, though last night he showed a glimmer of being a musician. But only a glimmer.)

I actually thought Ty was kind of annoying last night. The way he warbled his voice on the backend of so many notes. Ugh. I'd actually name him a bottom 3, but for Deanna, JD & Jordis sucking so bad.

I thought Ty's "Maggie May" was good. First off, it's a much harder song than Dylan or Spears or Frampton. Secondly, he did something a little different with it, gave it a bit of a soul flavor. Third, it worked.

Mig looked like a vulcan. Cover those ears, man!
His piano playing sucked. I played better piano than that when I was five. It needed more bass action. A bit of thunder to help support his weird vocal approach. That song needed a smooooth rendition, not his choppy, monty pythonesque theatrical attempt.

Marty, well, I give him points for making it through without pissing himself laughing. God knows I laughed all through the 'performance'.

Jordis was yucky, and looked like the mother from the bewitched series. What was with that cocktail-muumuu dress and old lady hair?

Ty was way too much...Jesus, if he got any more excited his heart woulda stopped. He made me squirm.

Jessica, I can't even remember, so it was a usual performance for her.
JD sucks even when he doesn't.
Deanna needed a bra.
Brooke needed a tailor. Or spats.
I almost don't want to watch tonight. But I will.

Mig and Deanna did originals. Deanna's wasn't half bad, for what it was. Mig's lyrics were a felony in 18 states.

Jordis simply must be booted. Her botch job was inexplicable. She got a song she wanted that was pretty easy to sing, provided you start off in the right key. She did not come within spitting distance of hitting one note in the song. That big screech could have been easily avoided. Why she felt she had to pull out some insane, nails-on-a-blackboard attempt is beyond me. Even Heather with a sore throat was better. The most thoroughly execrable moment of the show so far. I consider it karmic payback for her Dylan ad-libs.

They were all supposed to do originals, but what you bet that after the band gave a listen, they said, you guys better rethink this.

Mig was horrible, but Jordis set tthe new standard for horribleness. Like listening to the death of a forest creature....

But they'll never kick her off...

Yeah, but that's reality show understatement, where "you're awesome, dude," means "you're barely adequate, dude." And "not your best" means "a half-dozen feral cats fighting their way out of a sack." It's like govt performance reviews, where "outperforms expectations" means "useless as a vestigal tail".

Rich (10 days late) FFKT did another album after Live Love Larf and Loaf. It was called Invisible Means and came out on Windsong, of all places.

There are also two concerts circulating, both from The Ashekanz in Berkeley, one from '87 and one from '90. They may be available on http://www.dimeadozen.org/
If not, email me and whenever I get back to the US (in several months) I can send you copies. The sound quality is excellent.
There are some good Henry Kaiser concerts at
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree
but not the FFKT ones.

Amazon has copies of Ta Det Lungt's 3rd album but I'll backtrack this thread and try to find the Aquarius site as they may worth supporting.

I don't have any problems with Richard's voice although it can be a bit samey.

Thanks, Bill, for the info on Dungen (that's the band/guy's name).

I've talked to Henry Kaiser on the phone a couple of times--he's a big scifi fan. I was interested in his Madagascar trips with Lindley. He told me some strange stuff. Just before he left, all these Madagascar natives pressed messages on him for friends and family with no contact info; they didn't know how to contact them. Everywhere he went on the island, people would pop up out of the weeds and ask for their message. He was pretty weirded out by this. When I suggested there might be an other-than-paranormal explanation, he got prickly, Actually, I wanted to buy into the paranormal explanation, and just made my suggestion by way of making small talk. But he got edgy, defensive. Kind of paranoid. Like a lot of wealty people, he seemed suspicious of my motives in contacting him. Anyway, they were some interesting conversations.

I just want to take this time to curse y'all for getting me to watch a few episodes of this horrid little show.

Why?

Last night, on my commute home, up pops Eric Clapton & Co. with Layla (the old rock version, not the acoustic). And all I could see was Jordis with her peppy, boppy, glitzy version of the song, with too much makeup and glitter on her face. UGH!!! As soon as I got home, I removed the song from my computer and deleted it from my iPod. I guess I still have the acoustic version, which I do prefer, but still, an absolute classic, ruined for me...

I always loved that whole LP. I think Clapton should, at very least, be criminally fined for that lazy whiteboy cocktail shuffle version of "Layla" he laid down.

Forgive me, I had never heard of the Kaiser car company. But didn't it go out of business in the 1950s? Its descendents are still well-to-do 50 years later? Old Henry must have a good investment adviser.

Umm. No wonder I couldn't find it.

Kaiser chats from the stage and seems like an OK sort of guy, but didn't somebody once say "the rich are different"? At least he spends his inheritance on new guitars and figuring out new ways to play them. Great musician who genuinely loves all kinds of music. And he loves playing in small bars and even does covers. Too bad he was weird on the phone. I think his family also had steel and some sort of investment in the Kaiser Permanente "Ethical" Insurance company. That, alas, is pretty much an oxymoron.

All versions of Layla were awful. I walked out on Derek and the Dominoes after they followed a great set by early, good (don't get into an arguement with me here, this was circa Town and Country and long before Smokin' and the rest of the later trash) Humble Pie.

The cosmos are headed for complete implosion if Mig, Jordis and J.D. are not the bottom three tonight. The idea that Marty makes the bottom three for a passable, low key version of an awesome song, or that Ty (who has been the best week after week for quite some time now) has to justify his continued participation is ludicrous. How does Jordis get away with it week after week? Is it just because she's cute? Suzie gets points for sheer chutzpah.

Ty did a pretty good "You Can't Always Get What You Want," Marty did an OK, understated "Wish You Were Here," and Suzie did a stoopid, but funnish, over the top "Bohemian Rhapsody." On the downside, J.D. oozed histrionics all over "Suspicious Minds," revealing that he was an Elvis impersonator previously and wanted to do the song as himself for "closure," Jordis gave a goofy grin and flatted her way through "Imagine" and Mig looked like he was on amyl nitrate poppers jumping all over the place and making with the "YEAH"s during a rancid version of McCartney's thoroughly rotten "Live and Let Die." Kirk dissed Mig for singing over the instrumental breaks and one of the guys seemed bugged out by J.D.'s performance, but otherwise it was the usual phony hearts and flowers for everybody, esp. Suzie. Ty, Marty and JD were the early losers...Man, is Ty getting reamed or what?

Dave's almost dead on with his recap. I will say this, Suzie did an amazing job pulling it all back and nailing the ending of Bohemian Rhapsody, even if the rest of the song was a bit overthetop(but not in a bad way). And I think Ty didn't get any kind of a bluesy feel to his song at all. It was a good performance, but if you're singing the Stones, I think you gotta have a little blues in it.

Still, undoubtedly JD, Jordis & Mig were the worst. Not even close.
